The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Fontenys 1er Cru was quite closed and reticent on the nose from barrel, touches of cassis and violet petal eventually unfurling, though it remained broody. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fresh and vibrant. The velvety-textured finish is very caressing. Pure and focused, with a surfeit of energy, this is a superb Premier Cru from Roty.Inc. TAX€966.47 -

The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Fontenys 1er Cru has quite a sensual nose with black cherries, vanilla pod, blueberry and light pressed violet scents that cohere nicely with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, fine acidity, quite focused with a sapid, blood orange infused finish that lingers. Afford this 4-5 years in bottle.Inc. TAX€918.72 -

The 2014 Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru has a very refined nose not a million miles away from the Mazis-Chambertin, perhaps with even more delineation and mineralité. The palate is very refined with ripe tannin, lively and energetic; it is blessed with super-fine tannin and immense purity of fruit, as well as sensual and captivating on the finish. This is just a divine Griotte - divine. I expect it to ultimately rest at the top of my banded score. Returning to Domaine Joseph Roty two weeks after the untimely passing of Philippe Roty at 46 after a three year battle against cancer, as you would expect, one is filled with emotion far beyond that of appraising a new vintage. However, regretfully I have been in this same situation two or three times before and found that after obligatory condolences, there is always a desire to get back to some kind of normality and restore that sense of life going on. The blood stops running but the sap will always keep rising. And in a sense, Philippe is a strong spirit, a guiding influence at the domaine. Chatting with Pierre-Jean Roty, he told me how his brother had never relinquished until the very end, constantly asking him about the 2015 vintage. Photos and videos of the vines were bought in to his hospital and up until his last visits, he was still inspecting the vines and doing his best to continue as if he didn't have a matter of days left on this Earth. Perhaps one small consolation is that he died knowing that the domaine had been blessed with the 2015 vintage.Inc. TAX€3,541.68 -
Vinous (95)
The 2018 Griottes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a more open bouquet than the Mazis-Chambertin, offering nicely focused blackberry, briar and pencil box aromas and good intensity. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh and zesty, with fine tannins and blood orange infusing the blue fruit on the persistent finish. Superb, though it needs several years in the cellar.Inc. (6x75cl) 2019Vinous (92-94)
The 2019 Griottes-Chambertin Grand Cru is the one cuvée that flirted with excessive ripeness on the nose, revealing figgy aromas filtering through the black fruit and just missing the delineation of the Fonteny. The palate is balanced, though, and velvety-smooth; here there is less sign of the overripeness. In fact, the finish shows impressive clarity and refinement. Hopefully time in bottle will address the sur-maturité, so cellar this for several years.Inc. TAX€2,728.97 -

The 2021 Griottes-Chambertin Grand Cru is very pure on the nose with blueberry and raspberry fruit, wilted violet petals, flecks of Valrona chocolate developing with time. The palate is equally quite opulent in context of the vintage yet well controlled with a harmonious, cashmere finish of tart black fruit that lingers in the mouth. Very classy and seductive.Inc. Bright, deep ruby-red. Very ripe, wild aromas of kirsch, black raspberry and game. Round, sweet and voluminous on the palate, with complex flavors of black cherry, minerals, menthol, licorice and smoked meat. Serious tannins mask sound underlying acidity on the long finish.Inc. TAX€2,692.19 -
Wine Advocate (92-94)
The 2012 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru has a tightly wound bouquet with dark cherries, bergamot, vanilla-rich new oak (around 90%) and a touch of forest floor. The palate is medium-bodied with a rounded, quite corpulent entry, hints of dark chocolate and cherry liqueur infusing the red berry profile. There is good structure towards the finish with a fine grip and definition, although it will need several years to reveal its personality from under its wooden cloak. This is a burly but compelling Mazis-Chambertin that should be afforded several years in the cellar.Inc. TAX€5,415.60 -
Wine Advocate (93-95)
The 2013 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru is located in the lieu-dit of Mazis-Bas, between the vines of Bernard Dugat (Dugat-Py) and Domaine Maume. Matured in 90% new oak it has a fine clarity on the nose, the oak a little prominent, but that will meld together with time. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe black fruit mixed with blueberry, vanilla and a slither of marmalade. This is quite opulent but it remains nicely controlled with a long finish that is in the same style as Bernard Dugat’s Mazis. This is a knockout wine from Roty, a vin de garde that demands considerable cellaring.Inc. TAX€433.88 -
Vinous (94)
The 2018 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru is very well defined on the nose, which features detailed raspberry, dark cherry and crushed stone aromas; subtle rose petal scents emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and fresh and vibrant on the entry. Apricot and marmalade notes appear toward the finish. It does cut away a little swiftly on the aftertaste and as such, like the Griottes-Chambertin, it does not quite match my expectations from barrel.Inc. TAX€1,888.97 -

The 2019 Mazy-Chambertin Grand Cru has an almost confit-like bouquet, wild strawberry intermingling with crème de cassis and incense, plus just a touch of melted tar. The fresh palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity. Quite oaky on the finish (100% new); this will require several years to assimilate.Inc. TAX€4,912.19
