Wine Advocate (90-92)
The 2016 Marsannay Clos du Roy was cropped at a reasonable 35 hectoliters per hectare with no problem of frost or mildew. It has a forward and quite impressive bouquet of raspberry, cranberry and a touch of blackberry, well defined if fairly straightforward. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe tannin, a nice touch of bitter cherry to counter that ripe, lush red berry fruit with a tang of cracked black pepper towards the finish. Great protential.Inc. TAX€124.13 -
Vinous (90-92)
The 2021 Marsannay Clos du Roy has a splendid bouquet, very pure and perfumed, quite floral in style. The palate is fresh on the entry with crunchy red fruit, a bit chalky, crisp black and red fruit with a vibrant, rather mineral finish. This is quite superb.Inc. TAX€240.48 -
Vinous (91-93)
The 2022 Marsannay Clos du Roy has a classy bouquet with beautifully defined black cherry and bilberry fruit, an underlying mineralité becoming more evident with aeration. The medium-bodied palate is fresh with finely chiseled tannins and impressive structure, yet finishes harmonious and pure. Bon vin.Inc. TAX€304.54 -
(6x75cl) 2023Vinous - Neal Martin (90-92)
The 2023 Marsannay Clos du Roy had been racked one month before my visit and will continue aging in larger 600-liter barrels. This is understated, very poised and focused on the nose that unfolds succinctly in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, satisfying weight and a focused, quite structured finish. Maybe it doesn't quite have the ambition of the previous vintage, yet this is still a top-notch Marsannay.Expected Price Range€216 - €259 -
Vinous (91-93)
The 2019 Marsannay Es Chezots is one of the most impressive on the nose among Laurent Fournier’s cuvées with black cherries, cassis and briary aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe tannins. There is a discrete marine influence, touches of oyster shell and sea salt on the finish of this splendid and sophisticated Marsannay.Inc. TAX€285.46 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-92)
Rich deep purple, I do like the nose here. Laurent says it did not show so well earlier and is now only coming in to itself. He is looking at longer ageing. Huge stuffing to this yet entirely balanced. On the cusp of red and black, a little bit spicy and with excellent length. Tasted: November 2021Inc. TAX€367.68 -
Vinous (91-93)
The 2021 Marsannay Es Chezots has a lively, vibrant bouquet with pure Dorset plum and bilberry scents, light iris petal aromas. Very detailed. The palate is medium-bodied with finely-chiselled tannins, quite chalky in texture, perhaps a little compact but I feel this has something up its sleeve for later. Fournier's spiciest Marsannay. Great potential.Inc. TAX€251.74 -
Burghound (90-92)
A cooler and airier nose somewhat grudgingly displays its array of various dark berries, especially black raspberry, violet and a hint of wet stone character. The fleshy, rich and nicely textured medium weight flavors exhibit even more minerality on the youthfully austere, compact and serious finale. This balanced effort is textbook Es Chezots and should repay 8 to 12 years of keeping.Inc. TAX€258.94 -
Vinous - Neal Martin (91-93)
The 2023 Marsannay Les Longeroies has a sensual bouquet with vivid red berry fruit, raspberry and wild strawberry, wilted rose petal and crushed stone emerging with time. It has exquisite delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant, fine-boned tannins. This has more complexity than the Clos du Roy, fanning out wonderfully on the finish. Expect this to land at the top of my banded score. It is superb.Inc. TAX€315.12 -
Vinous (91-93)
The 2019 Marsannay Le Chapitre comprises a blend of 15- and 75-year-old vines. Interestingly, Laurent Fournier remarks that the younger vines performed better due to the superior rootstock. It has a gorgeous bouquet with dark cherries, blackcurrant and light violet aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, very velvety in texture with an almost crystalline finish. Just a wonderful Marsannay from Fournier this year.Inc. TAX€272.06 -
Burghound (88-91)
Here the nose displays that peculiar kind of reduction called bourgeon de cassis, or cassis bud, that crowds out more interesting notes. On the palate there is much better freshness and verve to the detailed and stony middleweight flavors that deliver good depth and persistence on the youthfully austere finaleInc. TAX€243.34 -
Vinous (92-94)
The 2019 Marsannay "Trois Terres" Vieilles Vignes has a dense bouquet with blackberry, Japanese nori and almost briny aromas. It gradually opens with more crushed stone scents coming through. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe tannins, fleshy to the point where it disguises the structure underneath, leading to a tarry and very sustained finish. Just about as good as Marsannay gets. Superb.Inc. TAX€409.08 -
Burghound (90-93)
An agreeably fresh nose freely offers up its array of spicy and perfumed red berries, soft earth and a floral whiff. There is fine mid-palate density to the seductively textured, even succulent, medium weight flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the lightly austere, firm and balanced finale. This is lovely and worth consideringInc. TAX€436.08 -

(6x75cl) 2003Vinous - Neal Martin (86)
The 2003 Cuvée Jean Gautreau is a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc picked between September 10 and 24. It has a fragrant bouquet of well-defined black fruit mixed with fresh fig and a touch of canned prune, but as with the 2003 Sociando-Mallet, there is no sense of overripeness. The fleshy palate is medium-bodied with soft tannin and touches of prune, white pepper and sage. Missing some tension on the finish, but otherwise this is drinking well. Tasted at the vertical tasting at Sociando-Mallet.Inc. TAX€489.83 -
(6x75cl) 2011Vinous - Neal Martin (87)
The 2011 Cuvée Jean Gautreau is a blend of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc picked between September 7 and 27. It has a simple, earthy bouquet that feels a bit dull compared to the excellent 2009 and 2010 vintages. The medium-bodied palate is nicely balanced, simple but focused, displaying fine tannin and tobacco-tinged black fruit on the rather short finish. Tasted at the vertical tasting at Sociando-Mallet.Inc. TAX€476.63 -
(6x75cl) 2012Vinous - Neal Martin (89)
The 2012 Cuvée Jean Gautreau is a blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc picked between September 28 and October 15. It has more definition and vivacity than the 2011, offering black fruit, tobacco and graphite notes; the Cabernet is clearly in the driver’s seat while Merlot gives directions. The ripe palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. This is perhaps the most modern in style of all the Cuvée Jean Gautreaus that I have tasted, yet there is panache here, and it feels long and tender in the mouth. The 2014 Chambolle-Musigny La Combe d'Orveau has dark fruit, blackberry and black plum, with a touch of sous-bois on the broody nose that demands some encouragement from the glass. It has an effervescent entry with a surfeit of energy. There is still a veneer of toasty new oak to be subsumed here, but there is sufficient fruit to do just that. There is a hint of black pepper toward the finish that is conservative but nicely defined. Give this 2-3 years once in bottle.Inc. TAX€1,418.77 -
