The 2014 Cincuenta y Cinco feels very complete even at this early stage with good concentration, ripeness and balance. It combines the elegance of the 2013 with the exuberance of 2011. Since 2011 they went for a light toast of the barrels and also started using larger volume, 600-liter formats. The oak feels perfectly integrated in the wine. In the context this is more powerful, and has a little more concentration and ripeness, but it's still a very balanced and fresh. The élevage for the 2021 Cincuenta y Cinco was different from the past; they have now aged 40% in concrete tanks (it used to be 25%), 40% in French oak barrels and 20% in clay amphorae for nine months. They use cover crops in the vineyard, where they don't even use sulfur or copper. It fermented in a round and wide concrete vat with indigenous yeasts for 12 to 15 days with full clusters and an infusion with little extraction. It has moderate ripeness and 12% alcohol, with more tension than the others. This is basically the same wine as the Sin Azufre but with a little more oak, which is barely noticeable but with some spiciness and Burgundian character developing tantalizing notes of violet pastille with time in the glass. It has a bright ruby color and a complex and subtle nose full of elegance and nuance. The palate is medium-bodied, with very fine tannins and supple flavors, primary, young and apparently weightless and ethereal but full of inner energy. The palate similarly conveys a somewhat rustic game and leather quality, and does not appear to possess enough flesh and fruit to support its elevated acidity. Ultimately a bit hollow in the middle palate. Finishes with dusty, drying tannins and a slightly tart quality. Not quite squeaky-clean, with the fruit currently suppressed. Once again there is a sufficient amount of reduction to warrant a thorough aeration. By contrast there is a lovely vibrancy and freshness in the mouth with plenty of sauvage character present on the velvety and caressing big-bodied and muscular flavors that coat the mouth thanks to the abundance of dry extract that also serves to buffer the very firm tannins on the moderately austere, serious and hugely long finish. As good as this is though it's not clear at this very early juncture whether it will ultimately surpass the Bressandes. On the palate, the wine is incredibly complete and multidimensional, with an ample chassis of fine-grained, chalky tannins, a bright line of acidity, and immense concentration and length. More deep and layered than the Corton Bressandes, this Clos du Roi is also finer-boned and more mineral, its aromas and flavors less wild and sauvage, and while the wine's considerable structure will demand a decade of bottle age, this will be a benchmark Corton in the fullness of time.Inc. Once again there is a sufficient amount of reduction to warrant a thorough aeration. By contrast there is a lovely vibrancy and freshness in the mouth with plenty of sauvage character present on the velvety and caressing big-bodied and muscular flavors that coat the mouth thanks to the abundance of dry extract that also serves to buffer the very firm tannins on the moderately austere, serious and hugely long finish. As good as this is though it's not clear at this very early juncture whether it will ultimately surpass the Bressandes.
