Abadia Retuerta Pago Negralada 2016 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (94)

Perhaps the finest vintage produced to date of their iconic Tempranillo is the 2016 Pago Negralada, which has a mixture of red and black fruit, some spices and firm but fine-grained tannins that give it tension and a chalky sensation in the texture. It's tasty and balanced, with good ripeness and freshness, medium to full-bodied, with stuffing and balance to develop nicely in bottle. I was surprised to see it has 15% alcohol, as it is very well disguised. 9,769 bottles, 611 magnums and 40 double magnums produced from 35 barrels. It was bottled in May 2018. 2016 marked the 20th anniversary of Abadía Retuerta, who came out with their seminal 1996s at the end of the century, and that somehow changed the view many had about the region just outside the boundaries of Ribera del Duero (part of their vineyards are inside the appellation, as the limit crosses the property). They have produced a 20th-anniversary red and released a white Cuvée Palomar produced mostly with Godello grapes and a red Cuvée Palomar in magnum to celebrate their anniversary. In the meantime, they fermented the first wine from the recovered ancient vineyard they found in 2007, which they have been recovering since, and they have filed the documentation to request the classification as Vino de Pago, the single-vineyard appellation that really makes sense in places like Abadía Retuerta. They now produce some 500,000 bottles from their 192 hectares of vineyards that are divided in 54 different plots, and they have conducted multiple studies of climate change—behavior of the plants and micro-vinifications of different plots—lead by the team of chief winemaker Ángel Anocíbar and consultant Pascal Delbeck. They surely have more knowledge of their vineyards than the majority of wineries in the zone.

Abadia Retuerta PV Petit Verdot 2015 (1x75cl)

Wine Advocate (95)

The real surprise of the tasting, the 2015 Petit Verdot is truly spectacular in this warm year, possibly the best bottling of this varietal they have done so far. It is open, expressive and elegant, with an unusually perfumed nose showing aromas of dry flowers, citrus peel and oriental spices. It has none of the roasted notes the variety can sometimes deliver, and I would have difficulties naming the variety if I tasted it blind. The palate is medium to full-bodied with very fine tannins and great harmony; this is elegant, hiding its power. It has tremendous freshness. It seems like the variety thrives in years like 2015—it's expressive, tasty and very long. This is scarce, and scarcity is reflected in the price. 3,245 bottles, 90 magnums and 20 double magnums were filled in May 2017 from 12 barrels. A monumental bottle of Petit Verdot. 2015 was a warm year, but the end of the summer was milder, which is what made the difference with the majority of warm vintages, and the wines are nicely balanced. As for 2017 was also very warm and was marked by frost, but they were nearly untouched.

Barahonda Yecla Campo Arriba 2014 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (93)

The 2014 Campo Arriba comes from one of the highest elevations in Yecla and it's a blend of 70% Mourvèdre, 20% Syrah and 10% Grenache aged three months in small French oak. This winery, started in 1925 by the Candela family, has really hit pay day with this amazing value. Blackberries, blueberries, acacia flowers, and chalky minerality dominate the aromatics and flavors. It is full-bodied, the price is absurdly low for a wine of this quality, and I suspect it can age nicely for another 5-6 years, although its true value is its exuberance, fruit purity and density.

Casa Castillo El Molar 2020 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (95)

The perfect Mediterranean vintage produced an outstanding Garnacha. The 2020 El Molar fermented with 35% full clusters and matured in a combination of 500-liter barrels and 5,000-liter foudres for one year. The wine is very young and tender; it feels more delicate despite having a little more alcohol than the 2019 (it's 15%) and with a slightly lower pH (3.49). It's super aromatic, extroverted and expressive, floral, elegant and complex. There is great balance, and the wine feels fresher and less ripe; it's refreshing and has a core of minerality and super fine tannins with pungent flavors. There is precision, elegance and balance, the three words that define the vintage. All the wines are very good value, but this is a steal. 40,000 bottles were filled in March 2022.

Casa Castillo Jumilla Las Gravas 2018 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (96)

The 2018 Las Gravas is a blend of 90% Monastrell from limestone gravel soils and 10% Garnacha also planted in the same gravel soils, but it's obviously much younger than the Monastrell. It fermented in underground pools with 25% to 30% full clusters and indigenous yeasts and matured in 5,000-liter oak foudres and 500-liter oak barrels for 16 months. It's an incredibly elegant and delicate Las Gravas, nuanced and with a discrete profile, a little shy at first. The palate is also super elegant and balanced, with refined tannins, a velvety texture and very fine chalky minerality. The north-facing vineyard, the backbone of this wine in a challenging and cooler year, is now 40 years old and has vigor and balance, which has resulted in an incredible wine through a lot of work in the vineyard. This has to be the finest vintage to date, a real triumph over the adverse conditions of the year that transcends the quality of the vintage. They used a lower percentage of Garnacha to avoid too much florality in the blend, and the wine is more serious. It's less explosive than the 2017, but I'd say, more gravelly... Bravo! 34,500 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2020.

El Nido Jumilla 2015 (1x300cl)

Vinous (95)

(aged for two years in new French and American oak barrels) Deep, bright-rimmed purple. A complex, expansive bouquet displays candied black/blue fruit, vanilla, Moroccan spice and cola qualities, with violet and dark chocolate notes building in the glass. Sweet and deeply concentrated, offering hefty, mineral-laced blackberry, cherry compote, fruitcake and vanilla flavors and a suave floral nuance. Firms up slowly on a strikingly long, chewy and dark fruit-dominated finish that's framed by dusty, building tannins.
