Even professionals with 30 years under their belt come across new regions and new varietals all the time – it is the passion/hobby/profession that just keeps on giving. If you have not yet experienced the elegance of new wave South African wines, the sweet nectar that is Tokaji from Hungary, the precise and terroir driven German Rieslings with unrivalled drinkability, the wild and sometimes bloody reds of Portugal, or any other of the beauties found off the beaten track, you are in for a treat. Wine can transport oneself to another place and time just by popping the cork, and there is a whole world full to discover.

Fresh cherry and lime garlanded in lily and laced with basil, mint and wintergreen inform a perfumed nose and a lusciously juicy, polished, buoyant, coolingly herbal palate. Freshness and vivacity are the watchwords for a refreshingly lingering, multifaceted finish underlain by wet stone and supportively but only subtly kissed with sweetness. Given 9 percent alcohol, one can be sure that the residual sugar is at a modest levels, yet there is all of the levity one could wish for from a Kabinett.

The 2020 Graacher Himmelreich Auslese is discreet and remarkably coolish on the dense and lemon-scented nose compared to Zeltingen and Bernkastel. White peach and nectarine aromas intertwined with coolish broken slate aromas make this a savory and irresistible Auslese, even though, or exactly because of it, this is so discreet and only subversively erotic on the nose. The palate then reveals stunning lightness and finesse based on a filigreed structure and highly refined and zesty acidity. This is almost weightless, but it has a sweet core that materializes the fruit, whereas in the transcendental Zeltinger Sonnenuhr, it's more of an idea. 7% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine from AP 19 21 in July 2022.

Lemon, pineapple, and blackcurrant site-typically scent the Prum 2010 Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Spatlese and are then projected onto a palate underlain with wet stone. A faintly smoky, prickly aura of reduction doesn’t preclude one relishing this wine’s effusive, delectable juiciness. Indeed, like the bit of CO2 Spritz that typically characterizes Prum Rieslings, it somehow enhances the wines appealingly invigorating nervous energy. Salt and stone seem to be thoroughly deposited in a tongue-quivering finish. Expect this to – again in estate-typical fashion – reward 20-30 years’ bottle maturation.

What an aristocratic appearance! Round, crystalline and saline on the palate, this 2020 Auslese is much more openhearted and fruity as well as frisky and frivolous than it pretends to be on the nose. Scents of pear and quince suggest a fresh as well as jellied aspect, mingled with mint, fennel and anise. James Suckling (95)

Probably the finest 2015 spätlese from J.J. Prum, but the nose is still a bit closed. Sensational clarity and vibrancy on the palate, the mineral finish super-long and refined. Better from 2018 and a long future ahead of it.

James Suckling (96)

This Spatlese beams you up to Cloud 9, from where you have a wonderful view over the beautiful Mosel Valley. In spite of the considerable concentration, this is super-delicate and precise on the barely medium-bodied palate. Enormously long finish, where you barely feel the natural grape sweetness. Drink or hold.

James Suckling (94)

The jasmine, honeysuckle and white-thorn aromas are augmented by a touch of wild-herb character that adds special tension. Succulent, medium-bodied palate with caramelized white-peach character, then a very clean and stony finish that is impressively long. Drink or hold.
