Decanter (97)

This definitive wine of pure Carricante is given extensive contact on the lees, without wood, taking its structure from the grapes and terroir. Pale with golden highlights, it offers iodised notes on the expressive nose and an almost shy (still very young) palate that builds slowly in the mouth to a finale of energy and length.

Plush and lush on the nose, with solid oak to back it up, speaking loudly of Bâtard-Montrachet. Could this be too much of a good thing? No, because there is an adequate thread of acidity to hold it all together. Pretty powerful stuff and faithful to the terroir. 10 barrels made in total. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted Oct 2024.

The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Caillerets 1er Cru has a very endearing bouquet, the best of Jadot's Chassagne cuvées, yellow plum and custard cremes, orange pith and a touch of blackcurrant leaf. The palate is certainly the most elegant and refined, crisp and detailed, with a harmonious, peachy finish dragging you back for another sip. Excellent.

The heady and ripe 2020 PS follows the house style and the profile of the regular Aalto from the same vintage, with slightly higher ripeness, more creaminess and toastier oak. It's predictable and very good at it, with abundant, slightly dusty tannins and some chalkiness in the pungent, intense and oaky finish. It has 15% alcohol and mellow acidity. For fans of oaky and ripe Tempranillo. 35,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in September 2022 after 21 months in new French oak barrels.

Disgorged in January 2023, the NV Extra-Brut Grand Cru Le Terroir (2020 base) is following hard on the heels of its 2019-base counterpart. A little more reserved out of the gates, it unwinds to reveal notes of pear, citrus oil, white flowers and almond paste, followed by a medium to full-bodied, pillowy and precise palate that's fine-boned, bright and mineral.

Wiry and saline, the NV (2021) Extra Brut Complantée Grand Cru is classic Agrapart all the way. As a reminder, the Complantée is a blend of Pinot Noir, Meunier, Pinot Blanc, Arbane, Petit Meslier and Chardonnay. Readers who like vibrant, floral Champagnes will adore this. Tense and sculpted to the core , the Complantée is so expressive in this tasting. Citrus oil, chalk, mint, white pepper and crushed rocks bristle with energy. Dosage is 3 grams per liter. Disgorged: June 2025; multiple disgorgements throughout the year.

This has an exceptionally detailed nose with fresh crushed stones, all shades of hazelnut, lemon blossom and grapefruit, as well as dried flowers. The palate has exceptionally fresh and piercing acidity with very fresh and frisky lemons, white nectarines and grapefruit, as well as an attractive, fresh and zesty finish. So intense. The 2013 Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Vénus is a gorgeous and eccentric wine. Sweet floral and minty overtones give the Vénus its distinctive high-toned profile. The richness and depth of this Chardonnay from a parcel planted in 1959 that has always been manually farmed, comes alive with a bit of time in the glass. The Vénus is such a special Champagne, as it is elusive and constantly changing in the glass as it shows a different side of its personality with each taste. I very much admire the sense of precision here. Vénus remains one of the most distinctive wines in all of Champagne. No dosage. Disgorged: May, 2019.

Domaine Long-Depaquit is the Chablis arm of the Bichot family. Vaucoupin is one of their signatures and in 2022 it shows a great combination of sun-ripened peach fruit on the palate, balanced by zesty acidity and a hint of white pepper. Lovely purity here. Manages to be both powerful and elegant at the same time. Already drinking nicely, this has the concentration to age very well.

Quite subtle and restrained on both nose and palate. Plenty of warmth of fruit, but as yet quite restrained. Lovely, salty, zesty notes promise a lot in the future. The unofficial 'eighth grand cru climat', Moutonne is a very exciting wine in 2022. A very sophisticated grand cru with a complex combination of purity, lift and precision on both the nose and palate, freshened with saltiness and iodine notes to finish. Concentrated with ripe fruit character and a lovely balance between power and elegance really lifting this. Wait for several years before broaching. Tank sample, tasted blind.

The 2019 Barbaresco Ronchi is a deep, potent wine. In this tasting, the Ronchi impresses with its stature, aromatic presence and textural intensity. Dark red cherry, red plum, cinnamon, rose petal and dried flowers emerge with a bit of coaxing, but the Ronchi is one of the least giving wines in the range today. I would cellar it for at least a few years. It is another wine where elegance and power meld together.

When they started co-fermenting this wine in 2005, it offered an integration and balance to this label that was missing when it was previously a blended wine. This is never more evident than in this incredible wine. The nose is utterly stunning a mere two and half years after my first taste, and it can only be described as a stellar creation. While the palate is closed, contemplative, hugely dense, and imposing, the link between the floral, tobacco, tea, and chypre-soaked nose and the extraordinary palate is gripping. There is no gap between perfume and palate ? no truck and trailer, just impeccable limousine. Sensational.

Decanter (99)

Winemaker Matt Sands has turned out perfection from the Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard in St. Helena with his Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc in 2021. Here, a barrel sample offers Cabernet Sauvignon as 92% of the blend, with Cabernet Franc filling out the rest. In the typical Lithology style, this is an inky black wine with a sumptuously silky and satiny profile, but in 2021, there is freshness, lift, and tension. The full-bodied palate offers fine, intricate tannins that are assertive yet harmonious with the dark berry fruit. At the same time, a rich vein of iron-like minerality and earth mingles with fragrant cedarwood, herbs and slivers of dark chocolate on a long and satisfying finish—polished, expressive, and delicious, all from an exceptional site in a terrific vintage. I am absolutely a candidate for a 100-point wine and will taste it again in the early months of 2024.
