Among the Most Beloved Port Houses | Quinta do Noval
Quinta do Noval is among the most beloved Port houses in operation, producing wines that show an uncommonly impressive balance of power and finesse.
Quinta do Noval follows its own path in its approach to Vintage Port. If they believe that they have wines of the quality and personality to join the ranks of their past Vintage Ports, they will bottle it and declare it. They will do this even if it means, as is often the case, bottling only a few hundred cases, representing a tiny percentage of the potential total production of the Quinta.
This Port's rarity is evident with their superb new release, Quinta do Noval Vintage Port 2019. With only 2,780 cases made of their 2019 vintage, just 14% of their capable production, their incredibly rigorous selection might have reduced quantities in 2019 but has created a fantastic wine that scores a huge 97+ points from Greg Sherwood MW.
Made from a blend of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesa, Tinto Cão, Sousão and Tinta Roriz and sourced from 13 different parcels that add their own unique character, the '2019 resembles the 2018 on steroids with just more profundity' (GS).
With a shift in style and the rise in quality of the spirit now used in Port production, you won't find the 'old school grippy tannins of years gone' (GS). Indeed, this 2019 shows no less tannins and structure, instead you find much more 'more precision, purity, freshness and black fruit focus' (GS). 'Elegance and balance' have now become the hallmark of Quinta do Noval and both are present in this 2019 in 'abundance' (GS).
Released at £270 per case IB, Quinta do Noval is always a thoroughly impressive wine, and with its combination of vinous classicism and new found elegance, we believe this 2019 makes for a very compelling Vintage Port.

Greg Sherwood MW (97+)
Made from a fine selection of grapes including Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesa, Tinto Cão, Sousão and Tinta Roriz sourced from 145 hectares over three large areas of vineyards allowed for a lot of flexibility at blending time, with the 2019 representing 13 different parcels that all add a unique character to the finished wine. Elegance and balance are the hallmarks and are all present in the 2019 in abundance. In many ways, the 2019 resembles the 2018 on steroids with just more profundity. Immediately attractive, deliciously forward and fresh, there is great finesse and balance in evidence with a silky, creamy texture and a youthful approachability. Gone are the old school grippy tannins of years gone by that used to be found on most young vintage Ports. Indeed the 2019 shows no less tannins and structure, just much more precision, purity, freshness and black fruit focus. In Bond€336.00
