Today, the Ribera del Duero is widely, and rightly, recognised as the region creating some of Spain's best red wines. The likes of Pingus, Vega Sicilia and Dominio del Aguila are already staples in the cellars of Spanish wine lovers, but with it's most recent release, the Valdaya Mirum 2018 has cemented itself among this line up as one of the 'best wines in Ribera del Duero' in the eyes of Tim Atkin MW.

A wine that 'keeps improving with every vintage', this 97 point beauty is 'long, stylish and beautifully judged' (TA). It comes from two high altitude old-vine parcels of Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) called Los Bueyes and Las Piedras, in Baños de Valdearodos.

Made using only free run juice aged for 15 months, the 2018 Mirum is a wine of great freshness that gives off 'subtle wood, chalky minerality, red berry fruit, tension and floral, violet top notes' (TA). With fewer than 500 cases of six produced on average each vintage, and no cases of back vintages available on the market, buying on release is the only way to secure this wine.

Bodegas Valdaya has seen a dramatic ascent in only seven years of winemaking. Established only in 2013, the estate is the work of the young and envisioned duo of Marta Ramos and Miguel Fisac. An immensely talented pair, it is remarkable that in just a short period of time they have managed to rise to the levels of their historic rivals. Their wines ooze age-worthy complexity and elegance, and none more than the Mirum 2018.

Released at just £250 per case IB, this is a rare and top-quality red from this estate on the rise. Expect to hear the name Valdaya in the upper-echelons of Spanish winemaking for many years to come.
