Jeb Dunnuck (95)Readers looking to get a taste of the impeccable quality and style from Schrader at a more affordable price point would do well to check out the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Double Diamond. Coming all from Oakville, it has a classic Cabernet nose of black and blue fruits, green tobacco, cedar pencil, damp earth, and chocolate. It's not over the top and has beautiful varietal character as well as medium to full body, ripe yet present tannins, good overall freshness, and a great finish. This is beautifully done and well worth a case purchase. I'd lean toward drinking bottles over the coming 10-12 years, but I certainly wouldn't be surprised to see it evolve longer. It's a candidate for the best Napa Cabernet under $100. |

When a new wine from Napa Valley ‘First Growth’ Schrader Cellars made by one of the leading winemakers of their generation worldwide, Thomas Rivers Brown (with thirty-three 100 point scores to date!), hits the headlines it is serious news.
Available for the first time outside of the estate, the Schrader Double Diamond 2018 has 80% of its fruit coming from To Kalon – the most famous, historic, and prestigious vineyard in Napa – making it an instant must-have for most top Napa Valley aficionados.
Offered at less than £65 per bottle IB, it looks to be a obvious no-brainer with Jeb Dunnuck believing it is definitely 'well worth a case purchase' as 'a candidate for the best Napa Cabernet under $100'.
Scoring 95 points from Dunnuck, the 2018 Double Diamond offers Schrader's 'impeccable quality and style' at a more affordable price-point to their top releases that cost over 4 times the price. A Cabernet Sauvignon that is 'not over the top', it has 'beautiful varietal character' with a medium to full body, ripe yet present tannins, notable overall freshness, and 'a great finish' (JD). With a drinking window up to 2035, Dunnuck 'wouldn't be surprised to see it evolve longer'.
A wine developed in the early 2000s to quench the thirst of Schrader's 3+ year waiting list for their top wines, production was stopped in 2013 as the estate focused on their stratospheric rise to Napa’s top tier. Previously made from a mix of fruit from the Napa Valley and its neighbouring AVAs, the Double Diamond has been reborn in 2018 with fruit purely from the famed Oakville AVA, explaining the incredibly high quality on show here.
Released at only £385 per case IB, the Schrader Double Diamond 2018 offers all the prestige and quality of top-class Californian Cabernet Sauvignon without the Napa Valley price-tag.
