In Tuscany, famous vineyards like Antinori, Marchesi di Frescobaldi, and Tenuta San Guido have become synonymous with excellence. The region's iconic wines, Barolo and Barbaresco, crafted from the Nebbiolo grape, epitomize power, elegance, and longevity. These wines boast flavors of red fruit, floral notes, earthy undertones, and firm tannins. Veneto, renowned for its sparkling Prosecco wines, is also famous for Amarone della Valpolicella. Vineyards like Allegrini and Quintarelli produce exceptional Amarone wines with concentrated flavors of dark fruit, spices, and a velvety texture. Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean, offers a different yet captivating expression of Italian wines. Vineyards like Planeta, Donnafugata, and Tasca d'Almerita craft remarkable wines from indigenous grape varieties such as Nero d'Avola and Nerello Mascalese. These wines exhibit intense fruit flavors, vibrant acidity, and a unique volcanic minerality.

These are just a few examples of the renowned vineyards and wines Italy has to offer. From the northern regions of Piedmont and Veneto to the central regions of Tuscany and Umbria, and down to the southern regions of Sicily and Puglia, Italy's wine regions are a treasure trove of exceptional wines. Experience the allure of Italian wines and immerse yourself in the rich history, diverse terroirs, and passionate winemaking that define the Italian wine scene. Vinous (97)

The 2019 Barolo Via Nuova is another gorgeous wine in this tasting. Soaring and broad in its aromatic intensity, the 2019 has it all. The blend of seven sites works so well. Readers will find a seamless, wonderfully complete Barolo. Dried flowers, herbs, mint, rose petal, kirsch and orange zest lend notable complexity throughout. The 2019 is deep and also quite rich, but not at all heavy. There is a touch of oak sweetness, but it just adds to the wine's exotic beauty.

  • Chiara Condello Le Lucciole Riserva 2017 (6x75cl)
Le Lucciole Riserva is sourced from a miniscule 0.8 hectare parcel of vines in the heart of Chiara’s holdings. 100% Sangiovese, this is a very special Italian “born-and-bred" wine of sensational quality. • Chiara Condello Le Lucciole Riserva 2020 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (94)

This wine is really quite lovely and memorable. The Chiara Condello 2020 Romagna Sangiovese Predappio Riserva Le Lucciole (a certified organic wine) delivers a bright and punchy character, which, unlike the more concentrated Lo Stralisco, is very lifted and vertical in personality. There is ample freshness here that leads to lots of energy and zest over a mid-weight close. This is my favorite wine in this group. Unfortunately, production is limited to 4,500 bottles. The Le Lucciole site is under one hectare in size.

  • Chiara Condello Romagna Sangiovese di Predappio 2020 (6x75cl)

The 2020 Sangiovese Romagna Predappio is spicy and deep, with sweet rose and dusty black cherries accentuated by hints of ash and mint. Wine Advocate (92+)

Like the other wines I tasted from Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona this year, I am surprised by the soft ripeness achieved in the 2014 Brunello di Montalcino. This was a cool and soggy vintage so those dark and sweet fruit flavors are counterintuitive. However, they elevate the wine to a higher intensity threshold and a more profound flavor profile. The wine offers enough crisp acidity and tannic firmness to hold it tightly together at this young stage in its lifespan. Some 60,000 bottles were released.

  • Christian Boffa Barolo Comune di La Morra 2019 (6x75cl)
  • Ciabot Berton Barolo Roggeri 2015 (1x75cl)

Indulge in the exquisite taste of Ciabot Berton Barolo Roggeri 2015, a truly premium Italian wine rooted in centuries-old winemaking traditions. This exceptional Barolo, hailing from the steep, south-facing slopes of La Morra in Piedmont, elegantly embodies the distinctive terroir. Ciabot Berton, an esteemed family-run vineyard since the 19th century, has artfully crafted this wine with 100% Nebbiolo grapes. Matured for 24 months in Slavonian oak barrels and further refined in the bottle, it exhibits a profound garnet hue, hallmark of its full-bodied character.

On the nose, it releases an evocative bouquet of dried roses and ripe berries, while on the palate, it harmonises layered notes of licorice, black cherry, and subtle spices. Tannins are beautifully balanced, lending complexity and depth for an immaculate finish. A collectable vintage, Ciabot Berton Barolo Roggeri 2015 is an exceptional wine that eloquently expresses the quintessence of its origin. Pair it with hearty dishes or linger over it in quiet contemplation.

  • Ciacci Piccolomini Brunello di Montalcino 2014 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (92+)

Like the other wines I tasted from Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona this year, I am surprised by the soft ripeness achieved in the 2014 Brunello di Montalcino. This was a cool and soggy vintage so those dark and sweet fruit flavors are counterintuitive. However, they elevate the wine to a higher intensity threshold and a more profound flavor profile. The wine offers enough crisp acidity and tannic firmness to hold it tightly together at this young stage in its lifespan. Some 60,000 bottles were released.

  • Ciacci Piccolomini Brunello di Montalcino 2016 (1x75cl)

    Wine Enthusiast (97)

Red-berry, wild-rose, crushed mint and dark-spice aromas are front and center on this fragrant red. The full-bodied palate is concentrated but also boasts finesse, offering layers of raspberry jam, smooth licorice and tobacco alongside a backbone of enveloping, velvety tannins. You'll also detect the warmth of alcohol but the succulent fruit stands up to it. Drink 2024–2036.

  • Ciacci Piccolomini Brunello di Montalcino Pianrosso 1995 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (95)

Medium-deep red. High-pitched aromas of roasted cherry, mocha, gunmetal, Cuban cigar tobacco, animal fur and oak spice; showed an explosive raspberry scent with aeration. Pure, thick and utterly suave, with very concentrated, delineated flavors of extraordinary sweetness and depth. The lush tannins are currently buried in fruit, but this highly aromatic, multidimensional Brunello has solid underlying structure. A knockout.
