The 2007 Barbaresco Riserva Rabaja is a big, dark wine loaded with dark fruit, menthol, tar, flowers, mint, rosemary and an array of balsamic notes that develop in the glass. Cascina Fontana's 2010 Barolo is not for the timid. Huge swaths of tannin provide the backbone for a super-classic wine that shows the more austere side of Barolo, and I mean that in the best sense of the word. The 2015 Canalicchio di Sopra Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is a dark and exotic expression of Sangiovese. It pulls you closer to the glass with an alluring display, showing medicinal cherry, plum, a sweet dusting of cinnamon, clove and finally crushed violets. The textures are like pure silk being slowly draped across your palate, offset by tart red and black fruits, as a complex web of acids, minerals and tannins saturate, clamping down toward the close. Structured and tart, as it should be at this youthful phase, the 2015 is still just an infant, with the potential for over a decade’s worth of positive evolution. This year’s Riserva hails from fruit exclusively from the Vigna Vecchia Mercatale vineyard within the Canalicchio cru, and it spends only two extra months in 2,500-liter Slavonian oak casks prior to bottling. On this night, it was the 2006 vintage that called to me from the cellar. Il Poggio is typically a blend of 95% Sangiovese and 5% Canaiolo Nero and Colorino, but what makes the 2006 unique was that it was the first year that Castello di Monsanto decided to stop using barrique and began refining the wine in 500-liter tonneaux, part new and part second pass. It’s also worth mentioning that, because of Il Poggio’s amazing ability to mature over the course of decades, this night was the first time that I decided to open a bottle of the 2006 since tasting it upon release - and I sure am glad that I did.2006 Castello di Monsanto Chianti Classico Riserva Il Poggio - You’d never guess that the 2006 Chianti Classico Riserva Il Poggio is fourteen years old, with a brilliant deep ruby color in the glass. The 2019 Barolo Baudana is absolutely captivating. Effusive and bright in the glass, with tons of freshness and remarkable fruit purity, the Baudana offers up generous dark red fruit, spice, leather, kirsch, hard candy, cedar, tobacco and underbrush. There's terrific depth here and exceptional balance, too. Rose petal, white pepper and chalk lift the high-toned, intensely saline finish. In Bond€85.00 -

Tasted over the course of two days it got better each time I revisited it.In Bond€220.00 -

The cellar process for the 2020 Brunello Di Montalcino Ugolforte is the same as Poggio di Sotto, but the clonal selection is different. A jeweled ruby color, the nose is very pretty, with pure notes of ripe raspberry liqueur, pressed flowers, sweet herbs, and incense. Medium-bodied, it's elegant and juicy on the palate, retaining wonderful freshness, with ripe tannins and a supple texture. The palate is approachable, with good length, and it should have a wide window for enjoyment over the coming 10-15 years. In Bond€220.00 -

Monsanto's 1982 Chianti Classico Riserva Il Poggio is a wine I could spend an entire day contemplating. The aromas and flavors meld together seamlessly as this powerful yet graceful wine flows from the glass. Vibrant red cherries, tobacco and spices come to life in a beautiful expression of the Il Poggio vineyard. This wine spent two and half years in cask. The tannins remain firm, and suggest at least another decade of glorious drinking lies ahead. The 1982 Il Poggio is a re-release directly from the estate. In Bond€454.00 -

(90% sangiovese with 10% canaiolo nero and colorino del Valdarno; pH 3.37; total acidity 5.72 g/l; dry extract 30 g/l; 14.1% alcohol): Bright red. Captivating aromas of redcurrant, sour red cherry, violet and licorice. Then distinctly sweet but not overripe or heavy on the palate, with very fruity, almost lush flavors of dark plum, redcurrant, mocha and clove complemented but not overwhelmed by sexy oak. The long and very graceful finish shows enticing sweetness and fine-grained tannins. One bottle showed signs of premature evolution, but the others were splendid. Absolutely great Chianti Classico in the context of the vintage. In Bond€315.00 -

The 2003 Chianti Classico Riserva Il Poggio is a firm, weighty version of this wine. The heat of the vintage has produced a plump, opulent Il Poggio redolent of earthiness, tobacco, smoke, spices and dark fruit. The tannins are big, yet well-integrated, the only open question is whether the fruit will last as long as the wine's structural components. Still, this is a pretty Il Poggio with plenty of upside. In 2003 Il Poggio was aged in French oak barriques of which 40% were new.In Bond€947.00 -

Its bouquet starts out airy and fresh, as white smoke blows off to reveal bassier tones of black cherry, a dusting of cinnamon, black tea, saddle leather and pine shavings. This is pure elegance on the palate, with silken textures that usher in a polished wave of dark red fruits and minerals, with teeming acids and hints of fine tannins that build to create a tug-of-war of tension toward the close. A tart twang of woodland berries and hints of savory herbs linger throughout the lightly structured finish. The 2006 is still so youthful, and it has many more years of positive evolution in store for us to enjoy, yet there’s still no harm in drinking this today. In Bond€215.00 -

(6x75cl) 2007Vinous (88)
The 2007 Chianti Classico Riserva Il Poggio comes across as surprisingly lean and compact, especially within the context of the vintage. It shows very limited mid-palate sweetness and dry tannins that attenuate the finish. I tasted several bottles and they were all very disappointing for this usually outstanding, benchmark wine. The 2007 Il Poggio spent 18 months in neutral 500-liter French oak barrels. In Bond€947.00 -

The 2010 Chianti Classico Riserva Vigneto Il Poggio is superb, but readers are going to have to be patient, as it is a wine for the cellar. It is quite evident the 2010 has already begun a move into a closed phase, as it is quite shut down in its aromatics. At the same time, the structural profile suggests it will enjoy a long drinking window starting around age 10-12, although that may be optimistic. Energetic, powerful and beautifully layered in the glass - with plenty of translucent energy - the 2010 Il Poggio is a wine to buy and forget about for another decade or so.In Bond€265.00
