The 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon Collezione De Marchi tasted from magnum, is glorious. Dark cherry, blackberries, melted road tar and licorice are some of the many notes that wrap around the palate in a dark, brooding wine endowed with tons of structure. At the time, 1997 was considered a very warm vintage, and it was, but those conditions are pretty much the norm these days. From magnum, the 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon remains a baby. A sweet, floral bouquet leads to expressive layers of fruit in the 2009 Barbaresco Vigneto Gallina. There is an immediacy to the Gallina that is quite appealing. White truffles, red berries and spices emerge over time, adding further complexity. I am surprised by how well the 2009 is showing today, even if it starts to shut down a bit in the glass. The tannins are firm, yet there is more than enough fruit to fill out the wine’s frame. This is one of the better young Gallinas I remember tasting. A rich, textured finish rounds things out in style. There is a lot to like and love in the Gallina. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024.Inc. TAX€317.59 -

A medium ruby red hue, the 2022 Barbaresco Gallina has pretty and refined layers that start to unfold in the glass with notes of cinnamon, bright red berries, currants, sweet tangerine citrus, and floral perfume. The Giuseppe Mascarello 2012 Barolo Riserva Monprivato Cà d'Morissio is only made in the best vintages. We did not see the wine in 2009 and 2011, but we did see it in 2010 and 2013. I have some reservations regarding this expression from the hot 2012 vintage. I tasted the wine at two separate moments, and although my first impression was one of enthusiasm, I was disappointed to see that it did not hold very long once the bottle was opened. This is a delicate and fragile wine that starts with wild berry and tobacco but ultimately reveals sun-drenched fruit, scorched earth and dried cherry skin. The quality of the fruit is very ripe, open and probably prone to some oncoming oxidation due to the hot and dry growing conditions. My suggestion is to catch this iconic wine on the near side instead of the far side.Inc. TAX€635.64 -

The 2016 Rosso di Montalcino hails from lower-elevation vineyards, around 250 meters, in the northern section of Montalcino. It’s a classic, layered and dramatic wine, showing bright cherry, sweet herbs, cooling mint, dried fall leaves, tobacco and savory spice, with a presence and depth that feels more like Brunello than Rosso in character. There’s sweetness and purity to the fruit here that keeps me coming back to the glass, yet I’m sure that the 2016 will benefit from a few years of cellaring, especially as its fine tannins build toward the close. This wine always stands apart in a tasting of Etna reds. Made with a blend of 70% Petit Verdot and 30% Cesanese d'Affile (a grape found mostly in the Lazio region of central Italy), this wine has been the focus of some controversy in the past because no indigenous grapes are used, but it has come into its own in recent years. With a production history that spans two decades, it is also one of the first red wines from the Sicilian volcano to emerge with international interest. The Passopisciaro 2022 Franchetti (with just 3,800 bottles made) reveals a blackish color and thick concentration with aromas of blackcurrant, spice and tobacco. There is ample meat on these bones in terms of succulence, fruit weight and a 15% alcohol content, but the wine does gracefully hold back from feeling too over-extracted or heavy. It shows velvety tannins. It ferments in stainless steel and starts off in barrique for six months, followed by 12 months of aging in large oak casks. Deep ruby with a pale rim. Very intense, complex nose of sweet ripe red fruit, plums macerated in alcohol, cinnamon, nutmeg and milk chocolate. Then surprisingly bright and precise on the palate given the almost opulent nose, with a suave, velvety mouthfeel and rich, ripe red cherry, sweet spice and cocoa flavors that makes this very reminiscent of a late harvest wine. Tastes extremely young and fresh; I would never have guessed it was almost twenty years old. In 1998, there was a little more Carignano and Bovale in the blend and less of the Malvasia Nera. This is in the same style as the young 2010 but is easier to view today. Really perfumes the mouth on the bracing, very long aftertaste. A beauty. In Bond€179.00 -
(1x75cl) 1998Vinous (97)
Still the latter grape variety’s presence is very obvious on the long smooth finish which features hints of camphor and an almost pungent floral quality. In Bond€153.00 -

The 2021 Barolo Marenca marries Serralunga power with a deep, resonant core of fruit. Ripe red cherry, blood orange, mint, cedar and pipe tobacco infuse the mid-palate with striking textural resonance. The Marenca is a rich, heady wine, but it is not overdone in any way. Fabulous. In Bond€153.00 -

Vinous (92+)
Dark ruby-red. Vibrant but reticent aromas of dark berries, cedar, cola, mint, sweet spices and underbrush. Concentrated and fine-grained, with harmonious acidity providing lift to the oak-influenced flavors of dark berries, licorice and herbs. This Montevetrano offers early appeal but also has the capacity for a leisurely evolution in bottle. In Bond€229.00 -

The 2005 Brunello di Montalcino Vigneto Manachiara emerges from the glass with a soft, expansive core of fruit, caressing the palate with dark red fruit, sweet spices and flowers. The wine’s inner perfume becomes more expressive with air, yet this too looks to be a Brunello best suited to mid-term drinking. In 2005 the Manachiara isn’t quite the powerhouse it is in most vintages, but it compensates for that with its beautiful sense of harmony. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2017.In Bond€277.00
