A bright ruby color, the 2020 Brunello Di Montalcino Sugarille was raised in 30- to 60-hectoliter botti for 24 months. It's expressive and layered on opening, with pure aromas of preserved red cherries, anise, delicate oak spice, and red flowers. It takes on more tension through the palate, with a refreshing spine of acidity, fine, angular tannins, and more mineral persistence. It packs in more tension compared to the Renina and has the structure to drink well over the coming 15-20 years if stored properly. While it might not have the same complexity as the 2019, this is going to be worth snapping up.Inc. TAX€1,621.72 -

A brightly jeweled ruby hue, the 2021 Barbaresco is super-expressive, with loads of wild raspberries that leap from the glass along with notes of strawberries, pressed roses, fresh orange, and violet. As it opens, it evens picks up some spice box, cigar incense, and cherry notes. Crystalline in nature and ripe, this next-level red delivers ripe, sweet tannins, great tension, and fresh, vibrant acidity, without any austerity. A luxury racecar, it’s fantastic and possibly the wine of the year. Drink 2025-2055.Inc. TAX€1,574.63 -

Roagna's 2011 Barbaresco Pajé Vecchie Viti opens with the most exquisite aromatics imaginable. A hypothetical blend of Asili and Montefico, the Pajé Vecchie Viti offers captivating perfume, ripe, silky fruit and exceptional overall balance. Oddly, the Vecchie Viti is much more accessible than the straight Pajé, which Roagna ascribes to this wine having had one more racking during aging. In 2011, the Barbaresco Pajé Vecchie Viti is pure and total finesse.Inc. TAX€1,588.48 -

The 2020 Barolo Rupestris is an elegant, sculpted wine. It shows the mid-weight structure of the year nicely. Sweet red cherry fruit, mint, chalk, white pepper, orange peel and dried flowers open with some coaxing. I would leave this alone in the cellar for a few years, as time in bottle is essential here. I won't be surprised if this fills out a bit over the coming years, as is often the case here. Many years ago Baldo Cappellano asked me not to score his wines, so all Cappellano wines show up on our database as NR.Inc. TAX€1,156.79 -
The Silvio Nardi Brunello di Montalcino 1988 epitomises the quintessential craftsmanship of Tuscany's esteemed Montalcino region. Crafted exclusively from Sangiovese Grosso grapes meticulously handpicked from vineyards situated on the fertile clay-limestone soils, this vintage showcases the enduring legacy of Silvio Nardi’s expertise. Aged for decades in French and Slavonian oak barrels, the wine has developed a profound complexity with layers of dried cherries, truffle, and earthy undertones, complemented by velvety tannins and a harmonious acidity. The 1988 vintage benefits from optimal climatic conditions, enhancing its depth and longevity. Silvio Nardi, a revered name since 1955, employs traditional winemaking techniques combined with modern precision, ensuring each bottle reflects unparalleled quality and character. A decadent nose of treacle tart, chocolate, tar, tons of black fruit such as blackberries and mulberries and even ash and licorice. The 1998 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Poggio al Vento comes across as a bit earlier-maturing in style, which isn't such a bad thing for readers who may also be holding some of the sturdier vintages. At the same time, the tannins are a little less polished than they are in the great years, and that is just part of the wine's DNA. Wild cherries, rosemary, herbs, licorice and leather are some of the notes that flow through to the finish. As good as the 1998 is, the finesse of the very best years isn't quite there.Inc. (5.9 g/l total acidity, 3.29 pH, 27.3 g/l dry extract, 13.9% alcohol): Bright, deep red. Explosively perfumed aromas of redcurrant, red cherry, yellow plum, violet, minerals and licorice on the captivating nose. Powerful, superconcentrated and seamless, with superb inner-mouth perfume and energy to the underbrush, sweet spice and white stone fruit flavors. Very full and sophisticated on the long finish, which boasts a seamless texture and uncommon flavor complexity. This is still amazingly young and built for the long haul. A absolutely superb wine from one of the greatest Brunello vintages of all time. This also spent 48 months in large oak cask.Inc. TAX€1,438.54 -

The 1990 Brunello di Montalcino impresses for its overall harmony. Everything is simply in the right place. The aromas, flavors and tannin have all matured evenly in this radiant, supple Brunello. Even at 21 years of age the 1990 remains a youngster, maybe with as much as another 20 years to go. Huge tannins frame the mouth-watering finish as the sheer vibrancy of Sangiovese saturates the palate with intense acidity. This is a great showing. Of course there is always an element of variation, especially among older wines, but I find it interesting that the straight 1990 Brunello appears to be aging more gracefully than the Riserva.Inc. The 2021 Barolo Cannubi is a jeweled ruby color and is fragrant, floral, and complex with aromas of fresh flowers, black raspberries, cherries, fresh spice, and sweet orange citrus. Medium-bodied, the palate is highly elegant and graceful, with refined, even tannins, ripe acidity, and a long finish with a great feel throughout. This Barolo opens up with aromas of bright cherries, cedar and a touch of sliced mushrooms. Medium-bodied with incisive freshness. The tannins are restrained, almost timid. A lifted and energetic Barolo, the 2021 Barolo Via Nuovais boasts a jeweled ruby color and has a fantastic, balanced nose with notes of ripe peaches, sweet sandalwood, floral perfume, and wild strawberries. Medium-bodied, the palate is refreshing and focused, with vibrant acidity, finely coiled tannins, and a long and linear finish. It has a bit more open feel at this stage, but it should have solid aging potential and improve over the next 20 or more years.Inc. TAX€517.19 -

The 2021 Barolo Villero soars from the glass with intensely spiced, balsamic-tinged aromatics. Deceptively medium in body, with superb persistence and class, the 2021 is simply magnificent. The 2015 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva is classic Quintarelli to the core, with a vibrant cascade of exotic spices, dried flowers, citrus peels and fresh crushed cherries forming its seductive bouquet. Juicy in feel yet deep and complex, it sweeps across the palate with ripe wildberry fruits elevated by a whiplash of electric acidity as violet inner florals arc across the senses. Long and staining but also impossibly fresh, the 2015 leaves a web of fine-grained tannins as hints of plum skin and licorice slowly fade. This is a rockstar.Inc. TAX€4,171.39 -

The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino Rennina is made from a blend of fruit from three different vineyard parcels. The sites total 25 hectares, with 15 located next to the church, or the Pieve, after which this estate is named. The sites have southwest exposures and different soil types. That flexibility explains the smooth and seamless bouquet offered by this wine. Compared to the single vineyard Sugarille expression, Rennina is more open and immediate. The wine presents fleshy and beautifully plump aromas of red cherry, dried blackberry and exotic spice with tobacco and chocolate at the back.Inc. TAX€1,071.29 -
(1x300cl) 2019Wine Advocate (97)
In my mind, this is the wine that best represents the Casanova di Neri house style. With 30 months of aging in tonneaux, it shows enormous richness and texture, and the stellar fruit quality appears with more primary elegance compared to the more expensive Cerretalto that is released with an extra year of aging. That dynamic is especially pronounced in a comparison of the 2019 and 2018 vintages. The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova has a dark vein of toasted spice, black fruit, ink, blackberry compote, licorice and star anise. Dark as night, it is exceptionally well crafted with a robust delivery of concentrated fruit and solid tannic structure. You can count on excellent cellar potential, or at a minimum, serve it with a classic steak. Production is exactly 69,696 bottles.Inc. TAX€647.18 -

The 2012 Barolo Bricco delle Viole is pure class. A decidedly sensual, inviting Bricco delle Viole, the 2012 fleshes out in the glass with an effortless, inviting personality that is impossible to resist. Deep red cherry and plum notes open up first, followed by the classic floral notes that are so typical of this site. In 2012, the Bricco delle Viole is quite forward and fruit-driven, with essentially none of the angular contours that are typical when the wine is young. All of that means the 2012 will deliver immense pleasure pretty much upon release. There is so much to like here. The only real question is whether the 2012 will shut down in bottle or not.
