Wine Advocate (94)The Giuseppe Mascarello 2012 Barolo Riserva Monprivato Cà d'Morissio is only made in the best vintages. We did not see the wine in 2009 and 2011, but we did see it in 2010 and 2013. I have some reservations regarding this expression from the hot 2012 vintage. I tasted the wine at two separate moments, and although my first impression was one of enthusiasm, I was disappointed to see that it did not hold very long once the bottle was opened. This is a delicate and fragile wine that starts with wild berry and tobacco but ultimately reveals sun-drenched fruit, scorched earth and dried cherry skin. The quality of the fruit is very ripe, open and probably prone to some oncoming oxidation due to the hot and dry growing conditions. My suggestion is to catch this iconic wine on the near side instead of the far side. |

Wine Advocate (97)This wine has been resting quietly in bottle since 2018 while getting ready for its release, which should be within the next month or two. The 2013 Barolo Monprivato Riserva Cà d'Morissio benefits from a long and slow growing season, just what the late-ripening Nebbiolo grape likes best. This wine delivers rich volume and a fine texture, with a pretty point of fresh acidity that is neatly buried behind bright fruit tones of cassis, dried cherry and rose hip. Earthy tones are woven within, and the wine shows slightly spicy highlights of licorice and tar that point to some of the subtle bottle evolution already underway. Generally speaking, the fruit in 2013 doesn't have the same power that we saw in the 2016 Barolo Monprivato (also reviewed here), but it does offer similar depth and elegant complexity. This is a collectors' bottle for sure. |

Kerin O'Keefe (98)The compelling 2016 Ca’ d’Morissio opens with enticing aromas of forest floor, camphor, blue flower and spice. Combining great structure and an almost weightless concentration, the delicious, full-bodied palate doles out succulent black cherry, black berry, black tea and menthol accompanied by a backbone of firm tannins. Fresh acidity keeps it balanced and energized. This needs time to develop to its full potential. |

Jeb Dunnuck (96)The second vintage of the 2020 Barolo Bussia is incredible. Pure and crystalline, with brilliant clarity, it offers notes of cherry cordial, cinnamon candies, alpine herbs, and chalky earth. The palate is energetic and pure, with a subtle luxuriance of ripe, refined tannins and a gamey underlying richness as well as a long-lasting finish. This exceptional wine may supersede the 2021, which I tasted at the estate, but given how things can change dramatically with a year spent in bottle, I wouldn't be surprised to see the inverse over time. Drink over the coming 20 years. |

Vinous (93)The 2014 Barolo Tre Tine is nervous and tightly wound, with good precision and a bit more austerity than is the norm. Readers will have to be patient with the 2014, although I suspect the wine will always be a bit aggressive because of the effects of hail. There is good delineation to the bright red stone fruit, tobacco and floral notes. It will be interesting to see how the 2014 develops in coming years. |

Wine Advocate (95)This wine celebrated its 100-year anniversary in 2016. Representing its 99th birthday, the 2015 Barolo Tre Tine is a blend of fruit from Ravera (60%), Le Coste (20%) and Cannubi San Lorenzo (20%). These sites encountered some challenges with hail in the 2014 vintage that resulted in a 30% loss of fruit. The Rinaldi family saw hail in the Brunate and Cerequio area in 2016. But the 2015 vintage saw smooth sailing and what winemaker Marta Rinaldi calls a return to normalcy. She says fermentations proceeded beautifully and without any holdups. This Barolo opens to a medium-dark garnet color with bright fruit tones followed by licorice, tar and delicate balsam herb. The wine offers a degree of softness that comes through in the quality of the tannins and the texture of the mouthfeel. |
