The 2018 Barbaresco Tradizione is a soft, easygoing wine. Dried cherry, tobacco, cedar, brown spice and dried flowers are signs of a Barbaresco that is maturing at a pretty fast clip. Even so, the 2018 will drink well for another few years.

The 2006 Barbaresco Camp Gros is decidedly more virile and masculine than the Gaiun. An elegant, powerful wine, the Camp Gros flows the layers of dark fruit intermingled with mint, pine, spices and a host of other balsamic nuances. I find striking purity and clarity in the glass, not to mention a fabulous sense of harmony. The Camp Gros is easily one of the finest wines from a vintage that have many growers in Barbaresco fits.

Medium red. Reticent but very pure aromas of raspberry, minerals and wild herbs, plus an exotic whiff of nectarine. Wonderfully silky and voluminous, offering seductive sweetness and outstanding noble perfume. Finishes with thoroughly sweet tannins, outstanding lift and palate-saturating persistence. As satisfying as a great Chambolle. (The estate's Gaiun vines were hit by hail in 2007, and this fruit was declassified into the nebbiolo bottling.)

Good medium red. Ineffable aromas of rose petal, marzipan, minerals, earth and wild spices. Large-scaled, round and deep but at the same time tactile, sappy and perfumed, displaying great inner-mouth tension and cut for such a broad wine. This is in the same style as the young 2010 but is easier to view today. Really perfumes the mouth on the bracing, very long aftertaste. A beauty.

Dark red cherries, tobacco, wild flowers, menthol and spices flesh out in the 2009 Barbaresco Camp Gros. A big, broad-shouldered Barbaresco, the 2009 boasts tremendous depth, power and richness. Firm and bigger than the Gaiun, the Camp Gros also has an attractive upper register of brilliant aromatics that add energy and perfume.

(done in small barrels, 30% new): Good medium red. Classic balsamic Martinenga aromas of flowers, tobacco and spices. Spicy and densely packed; showing more dimension and medicinal reserve than the Gaiun. Most impressive today on the spicy aftertaste, where the wine fills the retronasal passage and leaves it quivering. Quite powerful and long. But this wine is still wearing an overcoat, notes winemaker Jeff Chilcott, adding that it will not be released until late next year.

In 2016, large-scaled tannins wrap around all of that fruit intensity, adding a very appealing dimension of structure. Sweet red cherry, cinnamon, mint, cedar, rose petal and blood orange build into the complex, layered finish. I have seen the Gaiun age effortlessly in its top vintages. I have no doubt that it will be the case here as well.

The 2018 Barbaresco Gaiun Martinenga is a beautiful wine that shows the style of both the vintage and cru perched just above Asili. Dark cherry/plum, spice, menthol, licorice and a touch of nicely judged oak fill out the layers. In 2018 Gaiun is a bit light, as most wines are, and yet its balance is absolutely impeccable. Terrific.

The 2008 Barbaresco Martinenga fleshes out nicely with time in the glass. Sweet dark cherries, licorice, spices and leather are some of the notes that emerge from the glass. I very much like the way the 2008 has developed over the last year. I will not at all be surprised if it continues to improve in bottle as it is fresher and more vibrant than the 2009. The 2008 is a gorgeous wine that captures the very best of the house style.

The 2016 Barbaresco Martinenga is absolutely gorgeous. Pliant and deep, with terrific energy driving the flavors, the Martinenga really shows how compelling the vintage is. Sweet red cherry, rose petal, mint and chalk all lift out of the glass effortlessly. The 2016 is gracious and light on its feet, as all these wines are, yet it has an extra level of dimension that is one of the signatures of the year. The Barbaresco Martinenga is a real overachiever, and in that sense, the wine in this range reader should not miss.
