The 2018 Barolo Ravera is a powerful, rustic wine. Wild cherry, cedar, leather, orange zest, tobacco, herbs, menthol, iron and game race across the palate. Austere and wild, the 2018 is an assertive Barolo that will require time to come together. Even then, I expect the 2018 will always be more rustic than elegant, although I must add the 2018 compensates for some of its rough contours with good depth and tons of Nebbiolo complexity.

Fabio Motta is one of the best performers in Bolgheri among the small producers of the next generation. Almost ready with his new winery, it represents a kind of garagiste in the appellation. He ferments all the wines with natural yeast and manages careful extraction and maceration. His original blend for Le Gonnare sees an addition of Syrah to complete the 85% of Merlot and is aged in 1/3 new French oak barriques. Intense and perfumed it shows kiwi peel and cedar wood aromas, loaded with restrained cassis and bitter orange flavour. The attack is dense and ripe with elegant texture and chewy tension on the finish.

Vinous (92)

The 2018 Barolo Ravera is a powerful, rustic wine. Wild cherry, cedar, leather, orange zest, tobacco, herbs, menthol, iron and game race across the palate. Austere and wild, the 2018 is an assertive Barolo that will require time to come together. Even then, I expect the 2018 will always be more rustic than elegant, although I must add the 2018 compensates for some of its rough contours with good depth and tons of Nebbiolo complexity.

Immerse yourself in the splendour of Emidio Pepe Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 2018 – an impeccable testament to the artistry of Italian viticulture. Emidio Pepe, a proponent of biodynamic winemaking, intuitively crafts this red wine in Abruzzo, a serenely beautiful province in central Italy. The Montepulciano grapes are cultivated organically on the hilly terrain, hand-picked and then crushed by foot to achieve a carefully considered extraction of flavour. The wine is matured in glass-lined cement vats, resulting in a pure expression of the grape and land.

Emidio Pepe Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 2018 is richly complex, characterised by intense aromatics and a deeply layered palate. Juxtaposing dark fruity notes with an intriguing spice undertone, it boasts engaging depth and velvety tannins, all culminating in a lasting finish. Steeped in tradition and provenance, this wine impeccably melds nature, passion, and craft. An extraordinary opportunity to savour Italy's viticultural excellence.

Decanter (95)
