In Tuscany, famous vineyards like Antinori, Marchesi di Frescobaldi, and Tenuta San Guido produce some of the most renowned red wines in the world. Wines such as Brunello di Montalcino, Chianti Classico, and Super Tuscans like Sassicaia and Tignanello showcase the region's mastery in crafting complex, age-worthy, and expressive wines. These wines exhibit flavors of ripe berries, elegant tannins, and a harmonious balance that reflects the unique Tuscan terroir.

Piedmont is home to legendary vineyards and wineries that produce outstanding red wines. Renowned names such as GajaVietti, and Marchesi di Barolo are synonymous with excellence. The region's iconic wines, Barolo and Barbaresco, crafted from the Nebbiolo grape, epitomize power, elegance, and longevity. These wines boast flavors of red fruit, floral notes, earthy undertones, and firm tannins that develop beautifully with age.

Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean, offers a different yet captivating expression of Italian red wines. Vineyards like Planeta, Donnafugata, and Tasca d'Almerita craft remarkable wines from indigenous grape varieties such as Nero d'Avola and Nerello Mascalese. These wines exhibit intense fruit flavors, vibrant acidity, and a unique volcanic minerality, showcasing the island's diverse terroir.

In the Veneto region, Amarone della Valpolicella stands out as a distinctive and powerful red wine. Wineries like Allegrini, Tommasi, and Quintarelli produce exceptional Amarone wines using dried grapes, resulting in a wine with concentrated flavors of dark fruit, spices, and a velvety texture.

These are just a few examples of the remarkable red wines Italy has to offer. Whether you're indulging in a classic Tuscan Sangiovese, an elegant Piedmontese Nebbiolo, a bold Sicilian Nero d'Avola, or a robust Venetian Amarone, Italian red wines transport you to the sun-drenched vineyards and embody the passion, history, and artistry of Italian winemaking.

Experience the allure of Italian red wines and discover the immense variety and quality that make them a true treasure in the world of wine. The Wine Independent (97)

For Tenuta San Guido, "2008 was a beautiful year. Hot but not dry and not too hot," comments Carlo Paoli, general manager and head of winemaking. This 2008 Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia is still tight and youthful, and it is just starting to develop a garnet rim. The aromas were slow to reveal themselves but after 30 minutes, some notes of juniper, "macchia mediterranea", mint, and sweet tobacco appear. The texture is sublimely soft, round, and velvety - not heavy, but melting - with lots of juicy, vibrant acidity. With this vintage, the tannins continue in their refinement.

This 2019 Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia is really very special. A subtle change has occurred and the typically aristocratic and elegant finesse of Sassicaia now has a little more joie de vivre. It is intense and deeply concentrated without being heavy and with very fine, beautifully integrated tannins that harmonize with the body of the wine. Carlo Paoli, MD and head of winemaking, views 2019 as “one of the great vintages of the last decades. Although it was not generous in quantity (about 15% less than in 2016), for the quality of the grapes… it is to be considered exceptional.” The winemaking team are at their peak in terms of understanding and managing the vineyards and the more extreme vintage variations they face due to climate change. There were 280,000 bottles made this year but in response to climate change, Paoli plans to reduce the quantity. The 2019 reminds me a lot of the sublime 2016 but somehow it is bolder with even more energy, vivacity, and exuberance. Drink from 2024-2050.

A very perfumed Sassicaia on the nose with forest floor, citrus and deep dark fruits. Blackcurrants. Cedar and black tea. Some balsamic. Pine needles. Full and very succulent. Really long, structured and complete. Tangy and energetic with a linear line of fresh tannins and acidity. Very Sassicaia throughout. 85% cabernet sauvignon and the rest is cabernet franc. Very attractive now in a youthful and vibrant way, but this will be better in three to four years. Try after 2027.

The Tenute Silvio Nardi 2016 Brunello di Montalcino makes a big impact in the glass thanks to its dark color saturation and the pretty intensity of its aromas that range from dark fruit and plum to soft potting soil and grilled herb. You get beautiful balance here, even more so when you allow the bottle to breathe for a few hours. A twofold delivery of freshness and tannic backbone gives the wine the DNA required to hold 10 years or more. Having had the pleasure of touring the vineyards, I can firmly state that Tenute Silvio Nardi occupies one of the most distinctive areas of the Montalcino appellation, tucked into the northern side of the area, at high altitude, hidden by thick forests and cooled by an almost blueish quality of light. The soils are dark and mineral-rich with pockets of schists and shale. A unique position such as this does not guarantee consistent results every year, and I can imagine how vulnerable this area could be in the most extreme weather, especially given the later harvest. Indeed, my feeling is that vintage variation is experienced with greater intensity here. But when presented with a classic vintage such as 2016, all those elements fall magically in place to produce wines of extreme elegance and character. Tenute Silvio Nardi has three new releases from 2016: a classic Brunello and two single-vineyard expressions.

The 2016 Barbaresco from Socré is a powerful, virile wine. Black cherry, dried herbs, menthol, licorice, sage, leather and cedar infuse this potent Barbaresco with a good bit of character. The 2016 offers plenty of breath and power, but the balance is dominated by the tannins at this stage. I am not sure bottle age will make a meaningful difference.

The 2013 Barbaresco Roncaglie is a potent wine. Rich and broad on the palate, with considerable breadth, the Roncaglie is all about power. Black cherry, plum, mocha, licorice, smoke add to an impression of weight and gravitas. I am not sure the Roncaglie is a meaningfully better wine than the straight Barbaresco. The 2013 Sangiovese is the first wine at Soldera in which production bounces back to normal. Silky and beautifully perfumed in the glass, the 2013 is gracious, airy and wonderfully refined. Bright red cherry fruit, chalk, mint and wild roses soar out of the glass. It will be interesting to see where the 2013 goes in time. Over the years, I have learned that these wines have a way of transforming in bottle that is hard to predict. Today, the 2013 comes across as on the lighter side, although I have tasted some bottles that show more depth.

In 2014, the very challenging, wet growing season yielded just a single cask of Sangiovese that I was able to taste a few times before it was bottled. From the beginning, the 2014 was mesmerizing. It is all that and more today. Powerful and yet translucent in the glass, the 2014 presents a beguiling mélange of dark cherry, plum, lavender, spice and leather. I would be in no rush to open the 2014 today, as it is still very young. Soldera has historically done quite well in difficult years. I won’t be at all surprised if the 2014 turns out even better than this note suggests.

The 1999 Tenuta di Trinoro (70% Cabernet Franc, 20% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Petit Verdot) presents a distinctly over-ripe, almost raisinated personality, along with notes of chocolate and sweet toasted oak on a massively concentrated frame, with outstanding length and a lingering touch of sweetness on the finish. The 2015 Trinoro is soft, silky and nuanced. Although a very pretty and expressive wine, the 2015 doesn’t quite have the dimension or complexity of the very finest years. Admittedly, that is a very high bar. Today, the 2015 comes across as a bit understated and hushed, two adjectives I can't believe I am using to describe a Trinoro wine. This is one of the most versatile wines to emerge from Italy in recent years. A bread and butter winner for Vietti, the 2017 Barolo Castiglione is sharply contoured and bright, with an excellent quality of fruit that can be described as crisp, tonic and rich. A bread and butter winner for Vietti, the 2017 Barolo Castiglione is sharply contoured and bright, with an excellent quality of fruit that can be described as crisp, tonic and rich. That extra concentration comes in part from the hot vintage; however, the greater Castiglione growing area delivers consistent quality and persistence above all else.

Vinous (94)

The 2019 Barolo Castiglione is elegant, translucent and classy. Crushed red berry fruit, orange peel, mint and cinnamon all grace this elegant, wonderfully nuanced Barolo from Vietti. I especially admire the energy here. In many vintages, the Castiglione is easygoing and quite accessible, but I see the 2019 needing a few more years to come into its own. I especially admire its focus and cut.
