In Tuscany, famous vineyards like Antinori, Marchesi di Frescobaldi, and Tenuta San Guido have become synonymous with excellence. Wines such as Brunello di Montalcino, Chianti Classico, and Super Tuscans like Sassicaia and Tignanello showcase the region's mastery in crafting complex, age-worthy, and expressive wines. Piedmont is home to legendary vineyards like Gaja, Vietti, and Marchesi di Barolo. The region's iconic wines, Barolo and Barbaresco, crafted from the Nebbiolo grape, epitomize power, elegance, and longevity. These wines boast flavors of red fruit, floral notes, earthy undertones, and firm tannins. Veneto, renowned for its sparkling Prosecco wines, is also famous for Amarone della Valpolicella. Vineyards like Allegrini and Quintarelli produce exceptional Amarone wines with concentrated flavors of dark fruit, spices, and a velvety texture. Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean, offers a different yet captivating expression of Italian wines. Vineyards like Planeta, Donnafugata, and Tasca d'Almerita craft remarkable wines from indigenous grape varieties such as Nero d'Avola and Nerello Mascalese. These wines exhibit intense fruit flavors, vibrant acidity, and a unique volcanic minerality.
These are just a few examples of the renowned vineyards and wines Italy has to offer. From the northern regions of Piedmont and Veneto to the central regions of Tuscany and Umbria, and down to the southern regions of Sicily and Puglia, Italy's wine regions are a treasure trove of exceptional wines. Experience the allure of Italian wines and immerse yourself in the rich history, diverse terroirs, and passionate winemaking that define the Italian wine scene. Vinous (95)The 2018 Barolo Mosconi is superb. It offers up a complex mélange of rose petal, dried herbs, iron, graphite, smoke, incense, scorched earth and blood orange, capturing all the complexity that makes the best Barolos from this site so compelling. Powerful and deep, yet also quite elegant, the 2018 is another fine Barolo from an estate that has undergone a pretty significant stylistic shift over the last handful of years. |

Wine Advocate (95)With fruit from Montforte d'Alba, the Pio Cesare 2020 Barolo Mosconi was first produced in 2015. Although the winery team has more than five years of experience with Mosconi, Cesare Benvenuto tells me that there was a steep learning curve with this wine. Mosconi is 300 meters removed from Ornato; however, the results are quite different, especially in terms of the mouthfeel. Mosconi shows silky or velvety tannins, and Ornato is more structured. This wine is lifted in terms of aromas, with bright raspberry and blue flowers. It reveals an open but translucent quality that gives this Barolo an especially elegant and undertone personality. Production is 6,900 bottles. |

Vinous (94)The 2018 Barolo Ornato is somber, brooding and quite closed in on itself. There's a ton of aromatic and flavor complexity, but the fruit is very much in the background. It will be interesting to see if the 2018 emerges, or if it remains rather compact, as it is today. There's a good bit of density and power behind all of that tannin. Hints of blood orange, crushed raspberry, rose petal and cinnamon linger on the super-classic finish. |

Wine Advocate (95)The most powerful of the bunch is the Pio Cesare 2020 Barolo Ornato. This is a structured wine with firm tannins and dense fruit that falls on the darker side of the spectrum with blackberry and damson plum. You also get that typical Serralunga d'Alba imprint of rusty mineral and dark licorice. The wine is quite ample in terms of volume and depth, and iy's definitely reflective of its territory of origin. Production is 12,325 bottles, and larger formats were also made. |

Podere di Valloni Colline Novaresi Sass Russ 2017 is a mastercrafted Italian red wine, hailing from Novara hills in Piedmont. An exemplar of artisanal winemaking, this biodynamically-grown gem is the labour of love by the esteemed Podere dei Valloni estate. The winery employed traditional vinification techniques with fermentation in stainless steel tanks, followed by maturation in oak barrels to procure the rich, elegant structure of the wine. The 2017 Sass Russ is a harmonious blend of Nebbiolo and Vespolina grapes that imparts a vibrant ruby red hue. As an expert connoisseur, you'll relish the bouquet of wild berries, mixed spices, and light notes of vanilla. On the palate, this wine surprises with a striking balance of tannin, acidity, and fruit-forward lushness. Podere di Valloni Colline Novaresi Sass Russ 2017 is a testament to the Piedmontese terroir; a fine wine that deserves a place in every sophisticated cellar. |

A triumph of Italian winemaking, the Podere Le Boncie Le Trame 2019 embarks on a sensory journey that transcends the ordinary. Born in the prestigious hills of Chianti Classico, this superlative selection is the testament of Giovanna Morganti, a respected necologist inspired by her father's legacy. This wine espouses eco-friendly viticulture, as organic and biodynamic practices reign supreme. Commanding Sangiovese grapes amalgamated with delicate touches of Colorino, Mammolo and Foglia Tonda imbue exceptional character in the Podere Le Boncie Le Trame 2019. The grapes, cultivated across 5 hectares of rich limestone and clay soils, are handpicked and spontaneously fermented in Slavonian oak. The end result? An enchanting bouquet of red fruits, subtle earthy undertones and soft spices, harmonised by invigorating acidity and supple tannins. Revel in the tasteful elegance of Podere Le Boncie Le Trame 2019, a wine expressing the authenticity of its Tuscan cradle and the producer's unwavering commitment to excellence. |

Vinous (96)An enticing mix of exotic spice, crushed violets, medicinal black cherries and sweet mint wafts up from the 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Lupi e Sirene. Its textures are silky and rich, nicely matched by depths of ripe red and blue berries, plus an enriching hint of almond paste. This stops just short of decadence, as salty minerals and bright acidity add a more savory twang, and fine-grained tannins slowly take hold. While structured, the long, dramatic finale is packed full of dark primary fruits, savory herbs and hints of mocha. I expect the 2016 Riserva Lupi e Sirene to be firing on all cylinders after only a short stay in the cellar. There will be no 2017 due to the drastic loss of fruit in that extremely dry and warm vintage. |
