The region's iconic wines, Barolo and Barbaresco, crafted from the Nebbiolo grape, epitomize power, elegance, and longevity. These wines boast flavors of red fruit, floral notes, earthy undertones, and firm tannins. Veneto, renowned for its sparkling Prosecco wines, is also famous for Amarone della Valpolicella. Vineyards like Allegrini and Quintarelli produce exceptional Amarone wines with concentrated flavors of dark fruit, spices, and a velvety texture. Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean, offers a different yet captivating expression of Italian wines. Vineyards like Planeta, Donnafugata, and Tasca d'Almerita craft remarkable wines from indigenous grape varieties such as Nero d'Avola and Nerello Mascalese. These wines exhibit intense fruit flavors, vibrant acidity, and a unique volcanic minerality.
These are just a few examples of the renowned vineyards and wines Italy has to offer. From the northern regions of Piedmont and Veneto to the central regions of Tuscany and Umbria, and down to the southern regions of Sicily and Puglia, Italy's wine regions are a treasure trove of exceptional wines. Experience the allure of Italian wines and immerse yourself in the rich history, diverse terroirs, and passionate winemaking that define the Italian wine scene. Though an infant, the 2007 Barolo Riserva Rocche dell'Annunziata caresses the palate with gorgeous, silky layers of red berries, flowers, spices. The wine dazzles with expressive inner perfume and sweet, refined tannins that frame the exquisite finish. This is another head-spinning, hugely promising Barolo from Scavino.Inc. TAX€1,263.66 -
Wine Advocate (96)
This is among Paolo Scavino's latest releases. The 2011 Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata Riserva is a profound and generous wine from a hot vintage. The fruit is opulent and soft with blackberry, dried cherry and dark plum on prime display. The wine emits clear confidence and quality that is evident in the intensity and the depth displayed here. Additional layering and complexity is provided by lingering tones of spice, tobacco, moist earth and white truffle. This beautifully-crafted Barolo delivers the grace and the inherent age-worthiness of the La Morra township.Inc. TAX€1,335.59 -

The 2013 Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata Riserva was released in January of 2019, and once again it looks to be a top prize. Licorice and flowers dominate the bouquet, and its beautiful red fruit is generous throughout. This wine has always been a beauty and consistently has had a high price tag to reflect that quality, going back to the first vintages of the 1990s. It has regularly sold for about $200 every year for the last decade. These vines are old, some of them very old (reaching the ripe age of 60 years old in 1990s, when many of them were replanted with carefully selected clones), producing an elegance and concentration that brings intensity and a high standard of aromas. This Barolo without a doubt shows its pedigree and a quality of noble perfumes that demonstrate characteristics of the greatest Nebbiolo vintages, all delivered with excellent concentration. The magic lingers on the palate, right up to the finish.Inc. TAX€1,245.59 -
James Suckling (98)
Very intense blackberry and blueberry character with sliced-mushroom and tree-bark undertones. Porcini mushrooms really set the tone here. It’s full-bodied with powerful tannins that come through the fantastic fruit. Lots to see and understand here, but it’s just opening now. One for the cellar. Try after 2025.Inc. TAX€1,079.99 -
James Suckling (100)
Wow! There’s so much going on here. The nose presents an intense mix of dried cherry and red-berry fruit and rose petals, together with mild spice, Mediterranean herbs, tobacco dried apricot and dried and fresh nuts. Much more if you dig in. Full-bodied, super-relaxed palate that is the perfect display case for all the complex fruit character. The tannins are dense but seamless, never displaying any angular edge. Super-long and super concentrated, this is hard to fault. Yet, despite all the seeming extravagance, it remains a composed red with a long life ahead of it. Drink at your leisure.Inc. TAX€1,372.54 -
(6x75cl) 1999Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (94-97)
Full, deep red. A sappy, liqueur-like essence of fruit on the nose; hints at surmaturite Thick, silky and compellingly rich; an utterly seamless, lush wine that coats the entire palate yet somehow avoids heaviness. A dramatic Barolo that finishes with huge, sweet tannins and powerful, vibrant flavors of crystallized red fruits, flowers and camphor. This was the wine of the day at the marathon tasting I did of Barolo estates represented by superbroker Marc de Grazia, though it should be emphasized that it will not be bottled until late 2003.Inc. Good full red with an amber edge. Sweeter, higher-pitched aromas of plum and orange, plus a saline suggestion of anchovy. Not particularly primary on the palate, showing a flavor of slightly caramelized red fruits, but considerably more pliant than the Le Coste-Mosconi. The sweetest and silkiest of these 2003, finishing with late-arriving tannins that reach the incisors. Impressive for the vintage.Inc. TAX€876.23 -

This is one of the greatest wines I have ever had from here. So much ripe cherry, raspberry and floral character. Medium body, super-refined tannins and a long and flavorful finish. So much going on here. Better in 2021.Inc. TAX€533.03 -

Very exotic Parusso Barolo as always, with dried fruit, strawberries and tangerines. Full-bodied with chewy tannins and a powerful, intense finish. This is really structured. Needs four or five years to soften. Try in 2025.Inc. TAX€241.19 -

A rich nose, packed with aromas of ripe and dried red fruit, including heaps of wild strawberries. There’s fresh orange rind, too and on the savory side, notes of cloves, perfumed bark and brighter flowers. Full-bodied with a very silky but firm texture. The strawberry and citrus fruit is ingrained in the velvety tannins and the combination gives a very long finish. Twist of red licorice at the end. This is nicely structured and well balanced, but needs plenty of time. Try from 2026.Inc. TAX€285.59 -

Deep red. Very spicy, sweet red fruit and minerals on the captivating nose and the luscious mouth. Multilayered and complex, boasting a brooding youthful quality but also a polished texture. Finishes long, rich and sweet with enticing minerality and youthfully chewy tannins. A lovely wine that surprises me this year; I normally prefer Franchetti’s Contrada G or Contrada R.Inc. The 2021 Contrada Sciaranuova (S) is a well-muscled dancer who enters the stage coy and withdraws, forcing the taster to work for its youthfully backward bouquet. Suggestions of dried roses, licorice, wild strawberries and clove are enshrouded by sweet smoke. It flows across the palate with a wave of pure silk, seamless and refined with pretty red berry fruit underscored by minerals and a steadily building tannic tension that hints at the power within. This coats the palate with a staining of primary concentration that lingers long as violet inner florals and tart blackberry fade.Inc. TAX€370.54 -

The 2009 Franchetti is another stunning wine. The blend is Cesanese d'Affile (80%) and Petit Verdot (20%) that are the result of massal selections from Lazio and Franchetti's own Tenuta di Trinoro respectively. It is a fabulously ripe, exotic wine that envelops the palate with layers of dark fruit. Refined tannins support the fruit, while intense inner perfume adds sweetness and elegance, especially on the layered finish.Inc. TAX€595.88 -
(1x75cl) 2010Wine Advocate (95+)
Violets, tar, asphalt, black cherries and plums all come alive in the 2010 Franchetti. Wonderfully alive and vibrant in the glass, the 2010 shows an unusual level of ripeness and juiciness for the year. Ideally, the 2010 needs a few years to shed some of its baby fat, as it is almost too intense today. Still, it is impossible to miss the wine’s detail, nuance and transparency. This blend of Cesanese and Petit Verdot should be a stunner in another few years’ time. The flagship Franchetti remains one of the most distinctive wines of the Etna, although in spirit and interpretation it is quite far from every other wine I have tasted. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2025.Inc. TAX€133.32 -

(15.5% alcohol): Inky ruby. Superripe aromas and flavors of black cherry syrup, red cherry jam, chocolate and minerals. Spicy, peppery tannins and bright acidity provide plenty of backbone to this opulent, ultra-suave wine, which tastes like it was made with air-dried grapes. Extremely long on the finish, closing with a strong note of sweet pipe tobacco and a hint of volcanic ash. In fact, the smoky note was so evident that I couldn’t help thinking that this is what it must be like to drink a cigar.Inc. TAX€843.34
