  • Orma 2022 (6x75cl)

    James Suckling (97)

The cabernet sauvignon character comes through nicely in this red, particularly on the palate, with currants, both red and black, as well as dried flowers and cedar. Some lead pencil as well. Medium body, with polish, finesse and beauty. Lovely length and grace. This is a move towards better balance and energy for Orma. One to watch. A blend of mostly merlot with cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc. Best after 2026, but already a very attractive young wine.

  • Ornellaia 1986 (1x150cl)

    Wine Spectator (93)

An outstanding discovery. Ripe and tannic, with lots of tobacco flavor to add depth to the raisin and cherry flavors. Supple, harmonious and complex, a bit tough, built like a claret for long-term aging. Try it in 1993 to see how it is developing. 1,000 cases made.

Fruit and complexity as well as freshness and richness. Beautiful nose with extraordinary aromas of prunes, licorice, and dried flowers with rosemary undertones. Full-bodied and velvety textured. So beautiful to drink now, but obviously has a long future ahead.
  • Ornellaia 2000 (6x75cl)
    (6x75cl) 2000

    Vinous (94)

(60% cabernet sauvignon, 25% merlot and 15% cabernet franc) Very dark ruby with a purplish core. Red and black fruits mingle with spicy clove on the nose, followed by raspberry jam, chocolate and cinnamon on the palate. Even fresher and more delineated than the 1999 bottling, with superb focus and concentration. Very ripe tannins envelop the back end, which is underscored by a distinct mineral component and a hint of bell pepper. Succulent and classy at the same time.
  • Ornellaia 2001 (1x75cl)
    (1x75cl) 2001

    Vinous (96)

The 2001 Ornellaia (magnum) offers up violets, black cherries, minerals and earthiness in a big, structured style. The wine’s sheer intensity and thrust are nothing short of remarkable. Ideally, readers will give the 2001 another few years in bottle; as it is truly majestic stuff but will require patience. The 2001 Ornellaia is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc. The wine spent 18 months in French oak (70% new) prior to being lightly fined and bottled.

Italy has gone from strength to strength, with standards of winemaking improving all the time and more indigenous varietals than ever before reaching foreign markets. Every single region is a treasure trove of undiscovered gems worth exploring, while the more classic wines like Barolo and Brunello di Montalcino have more than caught up in quality with their French counterparts without catching up in price. A dizzying array of style and a natural affinity with food means there is really no need to look any further no matter the occasion.
