Vinous (95)

The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino from Canalicchio di Sopra - Ripaccioli is superb. The nose is dark and mineral-inflected with a blast of crushed raspberry, cherry and darker blackberry fruits wafting up from the glass, as sweet florals, underscored by moist soil and hints of cedar amass. On the palate, silky, almost creamy textures, offset by a stunning mix of salty-minerals and acids with savory herbs, and inner earth tones tempted the senses for another sip. The finish is remarkably long, resonating on minerals and dark fruits, almost balsamic and spicy, as its tannic structure comes forward and reminds me that this Brunello is still just a baby. What a gorgeous expression of Sangiovese.

Vinous (94)

The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino is stunning, finessed yet full of life, with bright cherry, sandalwood, shavings of cedar and dried Mediterranean herbs. It washes across the palate with a velvety mix of red currant and hints of balsamic spice, taking on a bit of a bitter twang toward the close. Hints of sour citrus and still slightly grippy tannins linger, as the 2012 shows its minerality, and hints of licorice slowly fade. I’d give the 2012 a few more years before really jumping in. It’s stunning.

Vinous (95+)

Dark red cherries, plums, spices, mint, licorice and hard candy jump from the glass in the estate's 2010 Brunello di Montalcino. Ripe, juicy and deeply expressive, the 2010 boasts stunning mid-palate density. Even with all of its immediacy and voluptuousness, the 2010 has enough structure to drink well for another 20+ years. The Canalicchio Brunellos always offer power, but the 2010 overlays tons of finesse to round things out.

Experience the sophisticated palate of the Campogiovanni Brunello di Montalcino Il Quercione 1997. This exquisite wine hails from the farmstead of Campogiovanni, located on the southwestern slope of the Montalcino hill in Tuscany, Italy. Produced by Agricola San Felice, the nimble mastery of this age-old art form is evident in each decanter. This Tuscan gem saw a vinification period in both stainless steel and oak vats, then laid down for a period of 36 months in Slavonian oak barrels, followed by refinement in the bottle for a further 12 months. The result is a paranormal blend of potency and elegance, twin harmonies crossing paths in a dance of taste tempered with time. Expect aromas of refined wood, enhanced by rich hints of spices and red fruits. Savour the Campogiovanni Brunello di Montalcino Il Quercione 1997 - an unforgettably harmonious swirl of tasteful complexity.

Vinous (92)

The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Gualto wafts up with an intense display of medicinal cherries, wild herbs and smoky crushed stone. This is pure and cool-toned, yet it offers the silkiest of textures and luxuriously ripe red fruits that balance the expression well. The Riserva Gualto tapers off lightly structured with balsam herbs and a subtle tug of grippy tannins. Don’t come here expecting a big strapping Riserva; the 2016 is all about charm.

Italy has gone from strength to strength, with standards of winemaking improving all the time and more indigenous varietals than ever before reaching foreign markets. Every single region is a treasure trove of undiscovered gems worth exploring, while the more classic wines like Barolo and Brunello di Montalcino have more than caught up in quality with their French counterparts without catching up in price. A dizzying array of style and a natural affinity with food means there is really no need to look any further no matter the occasion.
