Cavallotto’s 2018 Barolo Bricco Boschis is a powerhouse. A blast of sweet dark cherry, menthol, licorice, gravel and incense hits the palate. Youthful and quite strapping in terms of its presence, the 2018 holds quite a bit of promise. That’s the good news. But readers will have to be patient, as the tannins are quite searing at this stage for a wine that has typically been a bit more forthcoming. This is an especially serious edition of the Bricco Boschis Barolo.

All of these wines from Cavallotto deliver a very floral and perfumed subtext that gives lift and delicate buoyancy to the overall bouquet. This is the Castiglione Falletto magic that shows so well in this classic vintage. The 2016 Barolo Bricco Boschis offers dried cherry, sandalwood, bramble and forest floor. The wine reveals a slightly wild and untamed character that adds to its interest and personality. Overall, this is an elegant wine with a streamlined and elegant finish. The aromas are focused and bright. I can't wait to taste the Riserva expression from this site when it is released in three years' time.

A rich ruby into garnet hue, the 2015 Barolo Bricco Boschis offers layers of spice with rosemary, leather, cedar, and black cherry. Full-bodied and ripe, with rounded fruit that floods the palate with black raspberry, balsamic, and fresh earth, it is brooding and warming but remains pure and shows no signs of slowing down. Cavallotto is on a roll with some very impressive new releases. The 2013 Barolo Bricco Boschis is a tremendous effort that has an edge on the excellent 2010 vintage in my view. The wine shows a beautifully exuberant but elegant bouquet with the ethereal and undertone fruit and spice aromas you get with Nebbiolo. Although the wine is never overdone, it does show silky persistence and a long finish that comes from the noble nature of the tannins and the wine's textural finesse. Yet, it is playfully deceiving in a way because behind that polished grace, it delivers impressive depth and power.

Cavallotto's 2012 Barolo Bricco Boschis is soft, sensual and inviting, all of which make it more accessible at an early age than is typically the case. Bold and punchy throughout, the 2012 offers plenty of dark red cherry, plum, licorice and leather, all in a succulent style that can be appreciated with minimal fuss upon release. This silky, supple Barolo is very nicely done.

The 2010 Barolo Bricco Boschis is the flagship wine from this historic estate in Castiglione Falletto. The personality here is dark and brooding with savory aromas of cured meat and smoked bacon in a leading role. The intensity is bright and vibrant and the longer you contemplate the wine, the more it offers. Following a few swirls of the glass, you encounter sweet cherry, white almond skin, licorice and pressed rose. Still young, the wine shows enormous complexity. Its balanced structure and acidity would pair next to succulent lamb chops or any number of sophisticated meat recipes. Drink: 2016-2026.

Cavallotto's 2005 Barolo Bricco Boschis is one of the stars of the vintage. It possesses gorgeous depth and striking overall balance. Dark cherries, smoke, tobacco and new leather are some of the notes that flow from this beautifully crafted, extroverted Barolo. The 2005 is just beginning to develop additional complexity in its bouquet. This is one of the few cases where I preferred the 2005 to the 2006.

The 2004 Barolo Bricco Boschis tastes just like it did from barrel, which is to say sweet, layered and totally irresistible. The ripe red fruit is incredibly primary, and this wine is years away from offering its finest drinking, but it is already very impressive at this stage. This is an especially refined, elegant vintage for this wine, and I can only say that I await the Riservas with eager anticipation. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024.

The 2020 Barbera D’Alba Vigna Cuculo is a crowd pleaser of a wine, coming from vineyards just south of the Bricco Boschis. Pouring a deep magenta color, it’s plush with notes of ripe plum, candied flowers, and cocoa. Medium to full-bodied, it has good richness with good lift on the finish and is approachable now. Drink 2024-2030.

The Castiglion del Bosco 2012 Brunello di Montalcino exhibits classic lines and aromas that are faithfully characteristic of Tuscany's Sangiovese grape. There's a wild or untamed element with forest berry, underbrush, wild mushroom, lavender, tar and licorice. Balsam herbs also appear with cola and grilled rosemary. There's a lot to keep your attention. The mouthfeel is more streamlined and slightly shorter compared to previous vintages. This seems to be a common trait in 2012 Brunello but it does not make too much of a difference in this case.

The Castello Verduno Barolo Monvigliero Riserva 2017 is an exquisite example of fine Italian winemaking. Hailing from the prestigious Verduno subzone of Piedmont, this wine presents a memorable ageworthy expression of Nebbiolo. The vintners at Castello Verduno, a historic 19th-century winemaking establishment, dance on the delicate line of tradition and modern innovation to introduce this soulful vintage.

Using organic farming methods, the grapes are rigorously selected and traditionally vinified in large oak casks, enhancing complexity without overpowering the varietal character. The result is a wine distinguished by its terrific depth, layers of dark licorice and dried cherry, and robust, firmly tannic structure that ensures its formidable longevity.

The Castello Verduno Barolo Monvigliero Riserva 2017 is a powerful and elegant expression of its terroir - best suited for those crucial meals, patiently waited-for reunions, and quiet celebrations of everyday victories. A wine of sheer brilliance that remains a testament to Barolo's grandeur.

Italy has gone from strength to strength, with standards of winemaking improving all the time and more indigenous varietals than ever before reaching foreign markets. Every single region is a treasure trove of undiscovered gems worth exploring, while the more classic wines like Barolo and Brunello di Montalcino have more than caught up in quality with their French counterparts without catching up in price. A dizzying array of style and a natural affinity with food means there is really no need to look any further no matter the occasion.
