The 2021 Bolgheri Rosso is a saturated magenta/red color. The nose is a bit shy at this stage, slowly starting to show notes of fresh tobacco, leather, black cherry pit, and turned earth, while the palate brings forward more clarity of fruit. It’s full-bodied, with hearty, gripping tannins, a generous and fruity mid-palate, and good length with a warming finish. It’s a saturating wine that probably needs some time to open. There’s a woodsy character to the 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Lupi e Sirene, as wild herbs, young plums, crushed rocks and flowery underbrush form its bouquet. This is seamlessly silky and harmonious within, displaying masses of tart cherry and mineral tones contrasted by a core of vibrant acids. The 2018 keeps the energy high, even as grippy tannins saturate the palate, creating a youthfully structured yet incredibly fresh Brunello. That said, and while already bottled, the 2018 Riserva is just an infant today, and will need to soften and come fully into focus.Inc. TAX€732.52 -

An enticing mix of exotic spice, crushed violets, medicinal black cherries and sweet mint wafts up from the 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Lupi e Sirene. Its textures are silky and rich, nicely matched by depths of ripe red and blue berries, plus an enriching hint of almond paste. This stops just short of decadence, as salty minerals and bright acidity add a more savory twang, and fine-grained tannins slowly take hold. While structured, the long, dramatic finale is packed full of dark primary fruits, savory herbs and hints of mocha. I expect the 2016 Riserva Lupi e Sirene to be firing on all cylinders after only a short stay in the cellar. There will be no 2017 due to the drastic loss of fruit in that extremely dry and warm vintage.Inc. TAX€663.83 -

The most powerful of the bunch is the Pio Cesare 2020 Barolo Ornato. This is a structured wine with firm tannins and dense fruit that falls on the darker side of the spectrum with blackberry and damson plum. With fruit from Montforte d'Alba, the Pio Cesare 2020 Barolo Mosconi was first produced in 2015. Although the winery team has more than five years of experience with Mosconi, Cesare Benvenuto tells me that there was a steep learning curve with this wine. Mosconi is 300 meters removed from Ornato; however, the results are quite different, especially in terms of the mouthfeel. Mosconi shows silky or velvety tannins, and Ornato is more structured. This wine is lifted in terms of aromas, with bright raspberry and blue flowers. It reveals an open but translucent quality that gives this Barolo an especially elegant and undertone personality.
