Barolo

Known as the king of wines, it is potent, complex and long-lived wine made from the Nebbiolo grape. The appellation is spread over 2,134 ha in total and consists of several villages and communes. divided into a multitude of individual vineyard sites and crus similar to Burgundy, with many producers owning small plots of the individual crus.

The main winemaking approach is a long maceration of Nebbiolo grapes - between 30 to 60 days -followed by a long maturation period in large old casks for a minimum of 38 months. And many producers often choose to age their wines even longer than this because of the intense fruit and powerful tannins of their grapes.

The combination of microclimate, altitude, soil, exposition and each winemaker’s individual touch is what makes every Barolo different. And in the main communes such as Serralunga, Castiglione Falletto, and La Morra, their Barolos are renowned for certain characteristics unique to each of them, due to their differing soils and exposition.

Extremely perfumed with dark berries, cherries, strawberries and crushed stones. Full-bodied with chewy, polished tannins that are muscular. Fantastic structure to this young Barolo, as well as great length. It grows on the palate with ease. Truly impressive. Incredible. Try after 2025.

The 2018 Barolo Ornato is somber, brooding and quite closed in on itself. There's a ton of aromatic and flavor complexity, but the fruit is very much in the background. It will be interesting to see if the 2018 emerges, or if it remains rather compact, as it is today. There's a good bit of density and power behind all of that tannin. Hints of blood orange, crushed raspberry, rose petal and cinnamon linger on the super-classic finish.

The most powerful of the bunch is the Pio Cesare 2020 Barolo Ornato. This is a structured wine with firm tannins and dense fruit that falls on the darker side of the spectrum with blackberry and damson plum. You also get that typical Serralunga d'Alba imprint of rusty mineral and dark licorice. The wine is quite ample in terms of volume and depth, and iy's definitely reflective of its territory of origin. Production is 12,325 bottles, and larger formats were also made.

The 2012 Barolo Bussia Dardi Le Rose is another fabulous wine from Poderi Colla. Deep, layered and quite giving at the moment, the 2012 has more than enough depth to drink well for many years to come. It is perhaps not as pedigreed as the 2013 tasted alongside it, but it is very, very close. In fact, this is one of the highlights of the vintage.

Colla's 2013 Barolo Bussia Dardi Le Rose is a knock-out. Intensely sweet and perfumed, the 2013 reminds me of some of the most profound Barolos and Barbarescos I have tasted. Ripe red cherry, pipe tobacco, mint, dried rose petal, orange peel and anise are some of the endless nuances that seem to develop in the glass. The 2013 is a wine of depth, pedigree and class. It should provide thrilling drinking for a number of years. This is a regal wine in every way. Don't miss it.

The 2015 Barolo Bussia Dardi Le Rose is one of the most intriguing wines of the vintage. Sweet tobacco, cedar, dried cherry, mint and licorice give the wine an attractive openness at first, but that turns out to be deceptive, as the 2015 is much tighter on the palate. More than anything else, I am impressed by the wine's phenomenal length. I imagine the 2015 will always retain a slightly mature character in its aromas and flavors, but it also has the structure to develop beautifully in bottle for many years to come. This is an especially powerful edition of the Dardi Le Rose. I loved it.

The 2016 Barolo Bussia Dardi Le Rose is just as gorgeous as it always has been. Dark and translucent, the 2016 possesses striking layers of complexity. Spice, menthol, leather, sage and tobacco lend compelling nuance throughout. Although the 2016 is fabulous, it has also started to close down in bottle to a greater degree than I original envisaged. I wouldn't be in any rush to open it.

The 2017 Barolo Bussia Dardi Le Rose is superb. Classy and poised, the 2017 captures all the personality of Bussia. The Colla Barolos typically need a few years to shine. I imagine that will be the case here as well. As attractive as the 2017 is today, the best is yet to come. Crushed flowers, spice, sweet pipe tobacco and incense lend considerable nuance to a core of sweet Nebbiolo fruit. What a pretty wine this is.

Colla's 2021 Barolo Bussia Dardi Le Rose is elegant and sophisticated. Wild cherry, incense, blood orange, tobacco and rose petal lift effortlessly from the glass, supported by beams of tannin that lend shape as well as energy. Still tightly wound, the 2021 is going to need a few years to come into its own. There's a certainly a lot to look forward to.

Coming from Verduno, the 2020 Barolo Monvigliero is a bright red/ruby color and offers an expressive, rosy perfume of cranberries, dusty earth, and delicate spices. Medium-bodied, it’s very elegant and graceful on the palate’ with fine tannins, clean, evenly balanced acidity, and a nicely tapered finish. It’s quite appealing now but should have a solid 6-8 years ahead of it.

Intense aromas of blue fruit, lavender and violets. Some sandalwood, too. Full-bodied with firm, silky tannins and beautiful fruit. Really racy and refined with excellent length. Drinkable now, but a few years of bottle age will make it even more beautiful. Try after 2023.

The 2021 Barolo is a very pretty entry-level offering from Prunotto. Dried cherry, cedar, pipe tobacco and orange peel lend lovely aromatic presence to match the Barolo's mid-weight personality. I would not wait too long on the 2021, as it is already quite open.

The Prunotto 2020 Barolo Bussia is very light and luminous in appearance with shiny ruby highlights. There is a note of sweet cherry, even candied cherry, that appears on the bouquet and just as intensely on the mid-palate. Bussia offers delicate fruit in this rendition without the extra brawn and muscle that is most often associated with this site. Instead, this expression focuses in on finesse and silkiness. Fruit comes from across eight hectares in Bussia, and 32,000 bottles were created as a result.

The 2014 Barolo Riserva Bussia Vigna Colonnello is an eccentric wine. Soaring floral and savory nuances give the 2014 an incredibly distinctive upper register. Deceptive in its mid-weight structure, the 2014 nevertheless has plenty of depth as well as freshness. Appreciating it requires a palate reset, as vinificaton with whole clusters (50%) is not common in Barolo. The 2014 is an incredibly intriguing wine, but it needs to really be taken on its own terms because it is undeniably quirky. A few hours of aeration works wonders in helping the wine come together and assimilate the strong stem character that is so pronounced upon first opening.
