Barolo
Known as the king of wines, it is potent, complex and long-lived wine made from the Nebbiolo grape. The appellation is spread over 2,134 ha in total and consists of several villages and communes. divided into a multitude of individual vineyard sites and crus similar to Burgundy, with many producers owning small plots of the individual crus.
The main winemaking approach is a long maceration of Nebbiolo grapes - between 30 to 60 days -followed by a long maturation period in large old casks for a minimum of 38 months. And many producers often choose to age their wines even longer than this because of the intense fruit and powerful tannins of their grapes.
The combination of microclimate, altitude, soil, exposition and each winemaker’s individual touch is what makes every Barolo different. And in the main communes such as Serralunga, Castiglione Falletto, and La Morra, their Barolos are renowned for certain characteristics unique to each of them, due to their differing soils and exposition.

Vinous (94)The 2016 Barolo Brunate is captivating. Dried herbs, mint, sage, cedar, sweet pipe tobacco and gentle earthy notes give the 2016 lovely aromatic complexity. Like all of the Rinaldi 2016s, the Brunate has a bit more early appeal than some other recent vintages. Even so, there is plenty of depth, Brunate muscle and overall structure to support a number of years of fine drinking. |

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (94)The 2021 Barolo Brunate is another compelling wine from Rinaldi. Floral overtones meld into a core of dark red and blue-toned fruits. In this tasting, the Brunate is surprisingly gentle relative to the other wines in the range. That is somewhat unexpected, but also something that works. Hints of lavender, licorice, cloves and coffee build effortlessly, framed by insistent tannins that extend the finish. |

Vinous (95+)The 2015 Barolo Cannubi Riserva is a total stunner. In fact, it is one of the very best Barolos I have ever tasted from the Rinaldi family. Dark yet translucent, with remarkable depth, the Riserva is a total thrill from the very first taste. Lavender, spice, menthol, licorice and mocha give the Cannubi its distinctly dark, sepia-toned personality. The 2015 needs time, but it is compelling, to say the least. Vinous - Antonio Galloni (97)The 2019 Barolo Riserva Cannubi is such a total knockout. I am not always a fan of Riservas, as I don’t think the wines always deliver something meaningfully better than the non-Riserva versions, but that clearly does not apply here. A statuesque, towering Barolo, Rinaldi's 2019 Riserva dazzles from start to finish. Cannubi signatures are amplified to the maximum, but not distorted. Waves of dark red fruit caress the palate on the way to a deep, layered finish that is nothing short of compelling. Bravo! |
