Barolo

Known as the king of wines, it is potent, complex and long-lived wine made from the Nebbiolo grape. The appellation is spread over 2,134 ha in total and consists of several villages and communes. divided into a multitude of individual vineyard sites and crus similar to Burgundy, with many producers owning small plots of the individual crus.

The main winemaking approach is a long maceration of Nebbiolo grapes - between 30 to 60 days -followed by a long maturation period in large old casks for a minimum of 38 months. And many producers often choose to age their wines even longer than this because of the intense fruit and powerful tannins of their grapes.

The combination of microclimate, altitude, soil, exposition and each winemaker’s individual touch is what makes every Barolo different. And in the main communes such as Serralunga, Castiglione Falletto, and La Morra, their Barolos are renowned for certain characteristics unique to each of them, due to their differing soils and exposition.

  • Giuseppe Mascarello E Figlio Barolo Monprivato 2017 (12x75cl)

    Vinous (93)

The 2017 Barolo Monprivato is elegant, classy and nuanced. Crushed red berry fruit, spice and blood orange lend and exotic flair to this silky, mid-weight Barolo. The 2017 loses some of its persistence with air, but it offers tons of immediacy and sheer allure. Best of all, the 2017 will drink well with minimal cellaring. This is one of the better recent vintages of Monprivato the Mascarello family has released.

    Wine Advocate (95)

Tasted next to the 2020 vintage, the Giuseppe Mascarello 2019 Barolo Monprivato delivers a much darker and richer presentation of fruit. You get freshness and brightness with Bing cherry, cassis and dried pomegranate. The 2019 vintage is clearly more complex and offers more overall depth. As Elena Mascarello tells me, "2020 is all light, and 2019 leans into darkness." In this case, that darkness is what we look for in a wine to put aside in the cellar.

  • Giuseppe Mascarello E Figlio Barolo Monprivato 2020 (6x75cl)

    Vinous - Antonio Galloni (98)

The 2020 Barolo Monprivato is without question one of the finest wines to emerge from these cellars in many years. Translucent and layered, with captivating textural depth, the 2020 is positively stellar. Bright red-toned fruit, chalk, mint, white pepper, blood orange and dried rose petal come alive in the glass. This statuesque Barolo simply has it all. It's great to see the Mascarello family making truly pedigreed wines once again. To find a Monprivato of this exceptionally high level, readers will have to go back to the 1989. That's how outstanding the 2020 is.
  • Giuseppe Mascarello E Figlio Barolo Monprivato Ca d'Morissio Riserva 2003 (1x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (94+)

The 2003 Barolo Riserva Monprivato Ca d’Morissio is a powerful, seamless wine endowed with masses of dark fruit. This is a rather opulent, almost port-like Barolo from Mascarello that captures all of the best qualities of the 2003 harvest while avoiding the hard tannins that plague so many wines. A blast of iron, tar and smoke informs the long, virile finish. This will be a fascinating Barolo to follow over the coming years and decades. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2033.

    Wine Advocate (96+)

The 2004 Barolo Riserva Monprivato Ca d’Morissio is totally seamless and beautiful. It possesses gorgeous textural richness and finesse with virtually no perception of tannin. Rose petals, flowers, raspberries and mint come alive in the glass, but it is the wine’s subtle yet insistent chalky minerality that is the thread that holds the wine together. This is a hugely impressive Barolo with a bright future. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2034.

    Wine Spectator (97)

This red is still in its shell for now, only hinting at its full potential. Reserved aromas of flowers, strawberry and cherry are augmented by menthol, tobacco, spice and mineral flavors as this unfolds on the palate. The tannins keep a firm grip on the finish, but this shows elegance and delicacy overall. Just needs time. Best from 2016 through 2036. 300 cases made.
  • Giuseppe Mascarello E Figlio Barolo Monprivato Ca d'Morissio Riserva 2008 (1x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (95)

This is the current vintage on the market now. The 2008 Barolo Riserva Monprivato Cà d'Morissio is a polished and expressive creation that has inched slowly along its aging trajectory in the many years that have passed since the harvest. The wine has one foot in the realm of primary aromas with dark fruit and dried plum. The other foot has already moved toward tertiary tones of campfire ash, licorice, road paving and perfumed white truffle. The effects of oxygen have started their magic on this well-built and solid wine. The long finish ends with dryness and austerity.

  • Giuseppe Mascarello E Figlio Barolo Monprivato Ca d'Morissio Riserva 2010 (1x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (98)

The 2010 Barolo Riserva Monprivato Cà d'Morissio is one of the defining wines of this iconic vintage. This important wine was not made in 2009 or 2011. There will be releases in 2012 and 2013. However, the Mascarello family is not yet sure about 2014. If they do release the wine in that vintage, bottle production will be very small. Generally speaking, 4,000 bottles is the normal production target. This wine should be released more or less as this report is published in late spring 2018. There is a lot to say here, starting with the bouquet that is precisely defined and layered. You get tones of forest fruit, crushed mineral, wild sage and balsam herb. There are renderings of iodine, anise seed and licorice as well. What stands out most is the wine's seamless integration. The tannins are firm and dry, with just enough latitude to offer future development. This wine ages in bottle for two and a half years before its commercial release. It should not be touched for at least 5 more years, or preferably more.

  • Giuseppe Mascarello E Figlio Barolo Monprivato Ca d'Morissio Riserva 2012 (1x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (94)

The Giuseppe Mascarello 2012 Barolo Riserva Monprivato Cà d'Morissio is only made in the best vintages. We did not see the wine in 2009 and 2011, but we did see it in 2010 and 2013. I have some reservations regarding this expression from the hot 2012 vintage. I tasted the wine at two separate moments, and although my first impression was one of enthusiasm, I was disappointed to see that it did not hold very long once the bottle was opened. This is a delicate and fragile wine that starts with wild berry and tobacco but ultimately reveals sun-drenched fruit, scorched earth and dried cherry skin. The quality of the fruit is very ripe, open and probably prone to some oncoming oxidation due to the hot and dry growing conditions. My suggestion is to catch this iconic wine on the near side instead of the far side.

  • Giuseppe Mascarello E Figlio Barolo Monprivato Ca d'Morissio Riserva 2013 (1x150cl)

    Wine Advocate (97)

This wine has been resting quietly in bottle since 2018 while getting ready for its release, which should be within the next month or two. The 2013 Barolo Monprivato Riserva Cà d'Morissio benefits from a long and slow growing season, just what the late-ripening Nebbiolo grape likes best. This wine delivers rich volume and a fine texture, with a pretty point of fresh acidity that is neatly buried behind bright fruit tones of cassis, dried cherry and rose hip. Earthy tones are woven within, and the wine shows slightly spicy highlights of licorice and tar that point to some of the subtle bottle evolution already underway. Generally speaking, the fruit in 2013 doesn't have the same power that we saw in the 2016 Barolo Monprivato (also reviewed here), but it does offer similar depth and elegant complexity. This is a collectors' bottle for sure.

  • Giuseppe Rinaldi Barolo 1970 (1x178cl)

    Vinous (93)

At first, I am shocked by the wine’s sheer richness and concentration. The intensity of the flavors is unreal. Iron, smoke, tobacco, leather, game and incense all lend gravitas to this decidedly potent, virile Barolo. I find it pretty difficult to assign a rating to a wine like this. Objectively, the aromatics are more forward than the palate impression. The 1970 is certainly not going to get better with more time in bottle. On the other hand, it is a minor miracle wines from this era have survived to the present day at all given that they were never prized up until 15-20 years ago, maximum. Readers lucky enough to come across the 1970 Rinaldi will be drinking more than just a wine. This bottle represents the history of one of the great families of Barolo and artisan values that are increasingly rare in today’s world.

The second vintage of the 2020 Barolo Bussia is incredible. Pure and crystalline, with brilliant clarity, it offers notes of cherry cordial, cinnamon candies, alpine herbs, and chalky earth. The palate is energetic and pure, with a subtle luxuriance of ripe, refined tannins and a gamey underlying richness as well as a long-lasting finish. This exceptional wine may supersede the 2021, which I tasted at the estate, but given how things can change dramatically with a year spent in bottle, I wouldn't be surprised to see the inverse over time. Drink over the coming 20 years.

  • Giuseppe Mascarello E Figlio Barolo Monprivato Ca d'Morissio Riserva 2004 (1x75cl)

  • Giuseppe Mascarello E Figlio Barolo Monprivato Ca d'Morissio Riserva 2006 (1x75cl)

    Kerin O'Keefe (98)

The compelling 2016 Ca’ d’Morissio opens with enticing aromas of forest floor, camphor, blue flower and spice. Combining great structure and an almost weightless concentration, the delicious, full-bodied palate doles out succulent black cherry, black berry, black tea and menthol accompanied by a backbone of firm tannins. Fresh acidity keeps it balanced and energized. This needs time to develop to its full potential.

  • Giuseppe Rinaldi Barolo Bussia 2020 (12x75cl)

    Jeb Dunnuck (96)
