Barolo 2017
Barolo 2017s - First Impression by Walter Speller at JancisRobinson.com
Vintage 2017 was the hottest and driest vintage on record in Italy. It was undoubtedly a year that required agile vineyard management and an expert understanding of the terroir. Those wine-makers who were able to successfully mitigate the effect of heat, slow down ripening and pull forward harvest dates were the ones who triumphed in 2017.
Walter Speller at jancisrobinson.com released his first impressions on Barolo 2017 last month. Calling it a “surprising vintage”, he says most of the Barolo 2017s he tasted did indeed display “freshness and elegance” despite the heatwave conditions, a testament to how modern wine-makers are rising to the challenge of a warming world!

Vinous (94)The 2017 Barolo San Rocco is powerful and tightly wound. All of its energy is focused inward today. There is terrific brightness and focus to the red berry fruit, but the 2017 is not in a mood to show much today. Readers will have to be patient. I am encourage by the wine's solid feel and pure power. |

Wine Advocate (96)Showing a light ruby shine that radiates from the glass, the Bartolo Mascarello 2017 Barolo proves once again that elegance can be achieved, despite the many challenges of an extreme vintage, when worked by the right hands. In this case, the hands are those of Bartolo's daughter, the legendary Maria Teresa Mascarello. This celebrated Barolo boasts a silky sheen and glossy character that transcends bouquet and mouthfeel. Wild cherry, lilac, iron ore and candied orange peel are revealed softly on the bouquet. The wine takes a few minutes to open before all those pretty little details come into view. Acidity is an important component of this graceful Barolo, as it ties together the fruit and heightens that sense of electricity and liveliness. This is a collectors' bottle to keep safely in your cellar. |

Vinous (95)The 2017 Barolo Riserva Sarmassa Vigna Bricco is fabulous. Best of all, it will be ready to drink with minimal cellaring. Kirsch, blood orange, spice, dried rose petal, mint and sweet red cherry all meld together in a Barolo that marries a classic sense of structure with the natural intensity of a drought vintage. This heady Barolo is wonderfully exotic, and a real pleasure to taste today. Impressive. |

Vinous (90)The 2017 Barolo Cannubi is a bit compact and nervous in this vintage. Sweet dried cherry, red flowers, spice, blood orange, earthiness, and dried herbs open with a bit of coaxing. I would have preferred to see a bit more mid-palate pliancy, but the 2017 is nicely done just the same. |

Vinous (91)The 2017 Barolo Castellero is laced with sweet red cherry, cedar, sweet pipe tobacco, dried flowers and blood orange. There is just enough brightness to balance some of the more overt notes of the year. The Castellero is another impeccable Barolo from Enzo Brezza. Bright tannins extend the finish nicely. |
