Barolo 2017

Barolo 2017s - First Impression by Walter Speller at JancisRobinson.com

Vintage 2017 was the hottest and driest vintage on record in Italy. It was undoubtedly a year that required agile vineyard management and an expert understanding of the terroir. Those wine-makers who were able to successfully mitigate the effect of heat, slow down ripening and pull forward harvest dates were the ones who triumphed in 2017.

Walter Speller at jancisrobinson.com released his first impressions on Barolo 2017 last month. Calling it a “surprising vintage”, he says most of the Barolo 2017s he tasted did indeed display “freshness and elegance” despite the heatwave conditions, a testament to how modern wine-makers are rising to the challenge of a warming world!

Luigi Pira Barolo Margheria 2017 exemplifies the pinnacle of Piedmontese winemaking. Crafted from meticulously selected Nebbiolo grapes grown in the esteemed Margheria vineyard, this Barolo benefits from the region's unique terroir of calcareous marl and clay soils. Under the expert stewardship of Luigi Pira, a family-owned estate with decades of tradition, the 2017 vintage underwent a precise vinification process, including gentle destemming and fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks to preserve its vibrant aromatics. Following fermentation, the wine was aged for 36 months in a combination of French and Slavonian oak barrels, imparting subtle vanilla and spice notes while maintaining the grape's inherent elegance. On the palate, Luigi Pira Barolo Margheria 2017 reveals a harmonious balance of robust tannins, refined acidity, and complex flavours of red cherries, roses, and earthy undertones. This exquisite expression is a testament to Luigi Pira’s commitment to quality and the distinguished heritage of Barolo.

The 2017 Barolo Boiolo is soft and open-knit in its first impression, but there is a good bit of tannin lurking beneath. Dried cherry, tobacco, leather, spice and herbs lend quite a bit of aromatic complexity. This is an attractive 2017. Drink it over the next decade, give or take.

The 2017 Barolo Brunate shows the signatures of a warm, dry vintage in its slightly forward profile. Dried cherry, cedar, spice, tobacco and dried flowers are all nicely mellowed by the conditions of the year. There is good freshness, but I would not push my luck on aging. The 2017 is already pretty much ready to go.

Aromas of dried strawberries, orange peel and white truffles follow through to a full-bodied, compact and tight palate with fine, dusty tannins and an intense finish. Hints of chocolate and toffee at the end. Really complex. Drink after 2024.

So much ash and dried-strawberry character. Burnt orange-peel undertones. Tar, too. It’s full-bodied with chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. Lots of rose petals. This needs four or five years to open, but nicely integrated now. Try after 2024.

The recently bottled (as of 2023) Non-Vintage Vecchio Samperi opens with a flourish of stone dust and wildflowers, along with nuances of shaved cedar, butterscotch and dried apricot. It is distinctly savory in style, with soft textures and masses of salty mineral tones that give way to notes of peach and mulled apple. The finish is long and spicy yet remains quite fresh, leaving a saline resonance and a hint of hazelnut to linger.
