Tuscany

Tuscany, a picturesque region in central Italy, is renowned for producing some of the world's finest wines. With its rolling hills, Mediterranean climate, and rich cultural heritage, Tuscany offers a perfect combination of terroir and winemaking expertise. The region is home to legendary vineyards and wineries that have become synonymous with excellence and tradition.

One of the most famous vineyards in Tuscany is Antinori, a family-owned winery with a history dating back over 600 years. Their wines, such as Tignanello and Solaia, have achieved iconic status, showcasing the region's commitment to quality and innovation. Another renowned vineyard is Castello di Volpaia, known for its exceptional Chianti Classico wines that beautifully represent the Sangiovese grape.

Tuscany is synonymous with Chianti, a red wine made primarily from Sangiovese grapes. Chianti Classico, produced in the heart of the Chianti region, is highly regarded for its balance, elegance, and age-worthiness. Vineyards like Castello di Ama, Fontodi, and Fèlsina craft outstanding Chianti Classico wines that capture the essence of Tuscan winemaking.

The region is also famous for Brunello di Montalcino, a prestigious red wine made from Sangiovese Grosso grapes. Montalcino is home to renowned wineries such as Biondi-Santi and Casanova di Neri, which produce exceptional Brunello di Montalcino wines with remarkable structure, depth, and longevity.

Tuscany's coastal region, Bolgheri, has gained international acclaim for its Super Tuscan wines. These wines often blend international grape varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with local varieties. Notable vineyards in Bolgheri include Tenuta San Guido, known for its iconic Sassicaia, and Ornellaia, which produces the renowned Ornellaia wine.

Tuscany's diverse terroir also allows for the production of white wines, with Vernaccia di San Gimignano being the most notable. Vernaccia vineyards like Teruzzi & Puthod and Panizzi create crisp and aromatic white wines that showcase the region's versatility.

  • Castello dei Rampolla Liu 2021 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (95)

Made with 100% Merlot, the Castello dei Rampolla 2021 Liù shows a note of spice and dried herb that frame a dark core of fruit. The wine is rich in appearance, but the mouthfeel remains elegantly slender and polished. There is pretty structural softness here that speaks to the spirit of the variety and the sunny brilliance of Panzano in Chianti. Peppery notes appear on the close. This is a release of 7,109 bottles and 20 magnums.

  • Castello dei Rampolla Sammarco 2005 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (95)

This was a very difficult vintage for Castello dei Rampolla, with heavy rains that led to fruit loss and diminished yields for the top wines. Production of d'Alceo was severely reduced to a mere 1,000 bottles, and leftover fruit went to this wine instead, to its certain betterment. The 2005 Sammarco (a blend of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with smaller parts Merlot and Sangiovese) is more tertiary in character, but it maintains its enduring freshness. Cool growing conditions have shaped a wine with complexity and elegance, although you don't get the power of a warmer year. This vintage is especially ethereal and offers a nice break between the more powerful 2004 and 2006 vintages. "Fashion fades. Only style remains the same, said Coco Chanel," Maurizia di Napoli Rampolla tells me. This is a motto to live by.
  • Castello dei Rampolla Sammarco 2006 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (97+)

A huge, powerful wine, the 2006 Sammarco is one of the highlights among recent vintages. The 2006 is deep, dense and concentrated, with massive tannins that are matched pound for pound by the intensity of the fruit. A huge, explosive finish rounds things out in style. Readers will have to be exceedingly patient here. There is no denying the 2006's greatness, though. Today, the 2006 is far more impressive than it was at the outset.

A host of black cherry, graphite, smoke, plum and lavender notes accompany the powerful finish. It will be quite some time before the 2011 is ready to drink, but there is plenty to look forward to.
  • Castello dei Rampolla Sammarco 2012 (6x75cl)

    James Suckling (94)

  • Castello dei Rampolla Sammarco 2013 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (98)

The 2013 Sammarco is a stunning wine. Super-expressive aromatics make a strong opening statement in a wine endowed with myriad dimensions of nuance and complexity. The 2013 is deep and fleshy, with generous fruit, beautifully integrated tannins and exceptional finesse. Vinous (98)

The 2016 Sammarco is a dense, flamboyant wine. Inky red fruit, spice, cedar, tobacco, menthol and licorice are some of the notes that build in a statuesque Sammarco that dazzles from start to finish. A wine of stunning textural richness and intensity, Sammarco is translucent, sculpted and full of character. All the elements are so well balanced. Rose petal, cedar, tobacco and mint linger on the eternal finish. The 2016 is a magical wine that can be, surprisingly, enjoyed now or cellared for a number of years. Time in the glass just brings out its energy and vertical drive. Sammarco is quite possibly the single greatest value in high-end Italian wine. Don't miss it.

  • Castello dei Rampolla Sammarco 2017 (6x75cl)

    James Suckling (98)

Such beautiful balance and refinement to this legendary red with cherries, chocolate, walnuts, hazelnuts and autumn leaves. It’s medium to full-bodied with wonderful, creamy tannins and a persistent and complete finish. Better than the exquisite 2015? A blend of cabernet sauvignon, sangiovese and merlot. Needs three to four years to show all it has. Definitely one for the cellar.

  • Castello dei Rampolla Sammarco 2018 (1x150cl)

    Vinous (98)

The 2018 Sammarco is brilliant. Bright and explosive, with tons of linear drive, the 2018 is exceptionally polished. Cabernet Sauvignon is up to 80% of the blend, and that very much comes through in a wine endowed with tremendous purity. Blue/purplish fruit, lavender, sage, mint and blood orange all race across the palate. I love the freshness here.

  • Castello del Terriccio Lupicaia 2008 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (96)

The estate's 2008 Lupicaia was beautiful a year ago, and it is just as beautiful today. Over the last twelve months the tannins have begun to soften but the aromas remain quite primary. Mocha, espresso, menthol, tar, asphalt and licorice all flow through to the huge, layered finish. The 2008 is going to be a jewel of a wine. In 2008 the blend is 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot.

Beautifully resonant in the glass, the 2009 Lupicaia is a standout. Sweet red cherries, flowers, mint, anise, savory herbs and spices all ring out in a supple, gracious wine loaded with class. The 2009 needs a few years for some of the contours to soften, but it is a gorgeous wine with tons of personality. • Castello del Terriccio Lupicaia 2010 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (95)

The 2010 Lupicaia is another fruit-forward vintage, showing great intensity and depth. What makes this wine unique is its streamlined and focused nature. Overall, it is a ripe, generous and very intense wine with rich flavors and concentration. The integrated tannins are dusty and fine. It would pair well with rich and gamey meats like liver, innards or venison.
