Tuscany

Tuscany, a picturesque region in central Italy, is renowned for producing some of the world's finest wines. With its rolling hills, Mediterranean climate, and rich cultural heritage, Tuscany offers a perfect combination of terroir and winemaking expertise. The region is home to legendary vineyards and wineries that have become synonymous with excellence and tradition.

One of the most famous vineyards in Tuscany is Antinori, a family-owned winery with a history dating back over 600 years. Their wines, such as Tignanello and Solaia, have achieved iconic status, showcasing the region's commitment to quality and innovation. Another renowned vineyard is Castello di Volpaia, known for its exceptional Chianti Classico wines that beautifully represent the Sangiovese grape.

Tuscany is synonymous with Chianti, a red wine made primarily from Sangiovese grapes. Chianti Classico, produced in the heart of the Chianti region, is highly regarded for its balance, elegance, and age-worthiness. Vineyards like Castello di Ama, Fontodi, and Fèlsina craft outstanding Chianti Classico wines that capture the essence of Tuscan winemaking.

The region is also famous for Brunello di Montalcino, a prestigious red wine made from Sangiovese Grosso grapes. Montalcino is home to renowned wineries such as Biondi-Santi and Casanova di Neri, which produce exceptional Brunello di Montalcino wines with remarkable structure, depth, and longevity.

Tuscany's coastal region, Bolgheri, has gained international acclaim for its Super Tuscan wines. These wines often blend international grape varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with local varieties. Notable vineyards in Bolgheri include Tenuta San Guido, known for its iconic Sassicaia, and Ornellaia, which produces the renowned Ornellaia wine.

Tuscany's diverse terroir also allows for the production of white wines, with Vernaccia di San Gimignano being the most notable. Vernaccia vineyards like Teruzzi & Puthod and Panizzi create crisp and aromatic white wines that showcase the region's versatility.

  • Canalicchio di Sopra Brunello Montalcino Riserva 2015 (1x150cl)

    Vinous (95+)

The 2015 Canalicchio di Sopra Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is a dark and exotic expression of Sangiovese. It pulls you closer to the glass with an alluring display, showing medicinal cherry, plum, a sweet dusting of cinnamon, clove and finally crushed violets. The textures are like pure silk being slowly draped across your palate, offset by tart red and black fruits, as a complex web of acids, minerals and tannins saturate, clamping down toward the close. Structured and tart, as it should be at this youthful phase, the 2015 is still just an infant, with the potential for over a decade’s worth of positive evolution. This year’s Riserva hails from fruit exclusively from the Vigna Vecchia Mercatale vineyard within the Canalicchio cru, and it spends only two extra months in 2,500-liter Slavonian oak casks prior to bottling. Tasted over the course of two days it got better each time I revisited it.

  • Caparzo Brunello di Montalcino 1995 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (84)

Darker in color, with more evidence of ruby than the regular Brunello bottling, but still only moderately saturated. Shows some sweetness from the oak on the nose but also a pronounced cassis note that is distinctly not varietal. Round and reasonably soft in the mouth, with moderate concentration. This offers a more harmonious acidity than the above, as well as a degree of elegance, but not the weight or force of a Brunello from a superior vineyard. In a vintage like 1995, I expected more from a house that has been making very good wine in Montalcino since the 1970s.

  • Caparzo Brunello di Montalcino 2015 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (93)

Caparzo is one of two properties in Montalcino owned by the beautiful and charming Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini. The other property is Altesino. This wine, the Caparzo 2015 Brunello di Montalcino is a very classic interpretation that delivers the goods without any distracting bells or whistles. The wine opens to red and purple fruit aromas with background tones of dried herb, potting soil, cedar wood and light spice. Fruit comes from a site with heavier clay soils, and you get hints of that extra density and richness here. This vintage offers all you need in a model Brunello from a very beautiful and generous vintage. I always admire the wines of Caparzo for their accessible and immediate drinking style. Some 160,000 bottles were corked in August 2019, and the wine hit the market in January 2020.

The Canalicchio di Sopra 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Montosoli boasts an impeccable nose with elegant berry fruit and light minerality. All this beauty is transferred to the palate, where the wine shows very fine-grained tannins. The fruit flows steadily over a long, rich finish. The challenge is to get a fruit finish this long, considering Brunello's strong tannins, but this wine definitely succeeds. Production is 7,200 bottles plus larger

  • Canalicchio di Sopra Rosso di Montalcino 2022 (6x75cl)

    Jeb Dunnuck (93)

A bright ruby color, the 2022 Rosso Di Montalcino is refined and pretty on the nose, with a rosy perfume of fresh raspberries, dark wet stones, and fresh herbs slowly revealing itself. Medium-bodied, it is bright and linear with fine tannins and is going to need some time to flesh out. I have tasted several older vintages of this wine recently and found that they really start to show their best after a couple of years of extra time in the bottle. Drink 2025-2035.

This is a soft and delicate style of Sangiovese with vivid blackberry and cherry fruits that cascade across a core of saline-minerality.

A big, modern Brunello, with berry, cherry and vanilla character. Full-bodied, with round and polished tannins and a long, raisin and dried cherry aftertaste. A departure from the finesse of La Casa. Still needs time to come together. Best after 2003. 1,900 cases made.

Good full ruby. Brooding aromas of cassis, menthol, chocolate and minerals. Dense and juicy but slightly hard at present, with a floral nuance and nicely integrated acidity lending precision to the red fruit and violet flavors. The slightly tough tannins and the dumbed down fruit leave an impression of medicinal austerity on the long mouthcoating finish. Needs time.
