With its breath-taking landscapes, diverse terroir, and a rich winemaking heritage, Piedmont offers a captivating range of wines that captivate the senses. The region is home to legendary vineyards and wineries that have gained global recognition for their exceptional quality.
One of the most famous vineyards in Piedmont is Gaja, a family-owned winery that has played a pivotal role in elevating the region's wines to international acclaim. Their wines, such as Barbaresco and Barolo, are synonymous with excellence and showcase the complexity and elegance of Piedmontese wines. Piedmont is renowned for its red wines, particularly Barolo and Barbaresco, both made from the Nebbiolo grape. Renowned vineyards such as Produttori del Barbaresco and Gaja produce remarkable Barbaresco wines that exemplify the region's winemaking prowess.
Piedmont is also famous for its white wine, Moscato d'Asti, a sweet and aromatic wine made from the Moscato grape. Producers such as Michele Chiarlo and Saracco offer delightful Moscato d'Asti wines that are loved for their fragrant bouquet and refreshing sweetness.
Additionally, the region produces other notable wines, including Barbera d'Alba, Dolcetto d'Alba, and Gavi. These wines exhibit unique characteristics that reflect the local terroir and grape varieties.
Piedmont's fine wines are a true expression of artistry and tradition, showcasing the region's commitment to excellence. Whether you're savoring a prestigious Barolo, an elegant Barbaresco, or a delightful Moscato d'Asti, Piedmont's wines offer a remarkable journey of flavors and a glimpse into the rich winemaking heritage of this captivating region.

Dark ruby. Clerico's 1999 Pajana is simply an outrageous wine. It explodes out of the glass with an aromatic nose and masses of heady, sumptuous dark fruit, prune, plum and licorice sensations that burst onto the palate in an extraordinary expression of Nebbiolo that leaves me speechless. An awesome effort and a benchmark wine for the appellation. Highly recommended.Inc. TAX€1,335.07 -

This strong series continues with the 2001 Barolo Pajana. It too is a deeply-colored effort, with notes of violets, minerals and tar that appear out of the glass. The lower altititude of the vineyard gives a wine that is perhaps a touch less complex aromatically but that is quite rich, round and soft on the palate with generous amounts of very ripe black fruit, chocolate and toasted oak flavors supported by notable structure and finishing with excellent length.Inc. Pajana represents the lower end of the same site that produces fruit for the Barolo Ciabot Mentin. The soils are a bit looser here and the temperatures are just a few fractions higher at this site. Winemaking for the 2013 Barolo Pajana sees 20 days of skin maceration, and malolactic fermentation in this vintage was done in oak (otherwise that second fermentation occurs in stainless steel). The idea, of course, is to work without oxygen, but if the malolactic fermentations are slow, the wine goes into wood, as is the case here. The wine later ages in barrique for 16 months with another 16 months in botte grande. The bouquet offers delicate layers of mineral and flint with dark fruit and spice neatly folded into its thick texture. Both the Barolo Pajana and the Barolo Ciabot Mentin are released one year after their peers.Inc. TAX€436.79 -

The Pajana vineyard is known for its loose, sandy soils and red-colored earth, and the 2014 growing season brought cool and wet conditions. This cru is a nice, loyal expression of those Nebbiolo grapes. The 2014 Barolo Pajana is dark and thickly structured, and probably more accessible overall. This wine can be enjoyed in the medium-term, after five years (more or less) of cellar time. It saw 16 months in barrique, another 16 months in botte grande and a couple of years in the bottle.Inc. The Domenico Clerico 2015 Barolo Pajana opens to a beautifully saturated color with dark garnet and ruby highlights. Compared to the 2016 vintage that I tasted at the same time, this wine is more robust, structured and deeper. In some cases, I prefer 2016 to 2015, but this is one case in which the warmer vintage ushers forth a special and very attractive level of intensity. The bouquet is layered, multifaceted and fluid. Despite the many adjectives you could use to describe the bouquet, one thing does not change and that is the sheer intensity of this impressive Barolo Pajana.Inc. TAX€117.40 -

Deep, bright red. Sappy aromas of kirsch, mocha, tobacco, licorice and spicy, roasted oak. Sweet and thick but with lovely vibrancy and delineation.
