Piedmont
Piedmont, located in northwest Italy, is renowned for producing some of the world's most exquisite fine wines. With its breath-taking landscapes, diverse terroir, and a rich winemaking heritage, Piedmont offers a captivating range of wines that captivate the senses. The region is home to legendary vineyards and wineries that have gained global recognition for their exceptional quality.
One of the most famous vineyards in Piedmont is Gaja, a family-owned winery that has played a pivotal role in elevating the region's wines to international acclaim. Their wines, such as Barbaresco and Barolo, are synonymous with excellence and showcase the complexity and elegance of Piedmontese wines. Another esteemed vineyard is Vietti, known for its iconic Barolo wines that beautifully reflect the region's terroir and winemaking traditions.
Piedmont is renowned for its red wines, particularly Barolo and Barbaresco, both made from the Nebbiolo grape. Barolo is often referred to as the "King of Wines" due to its full-bodied structure, intense aromatics, and potential for aging. Notable vineyards like Bruno Giacosa, Giacomo Conterno, and Paolo Scavino craft outstanding Barolo wines that capture the essence of the region. Barbaresco, a neighboring appellation, offers equally exceptional wines with a slightly softer and more approachable character. Renowned vineyards such as Produttori del Barbaresco and Gaja produce remarkable Barbaresco wines that exemplify the region's winemaking prowess.
Piedmont is also famous for its white wine, Moscato d'Asti, a sweet and aromatic wine made from the Moscato grape. Producers such as Michele Chiarlo and Saracco offer delightful Moscato d'Asti wines that are loved for their fragrant bouquet and refreshing sweetness.
Additionally, the region produces other notable wines, including Barbera d'Alba, Dolcetto d'Alba, and Gavi. These wines exhibit unique characteristics that reflect the local terroir and grape varieties.
Piedmont's fine wines are a true expression of artistry and tradition, showcasing the region's commitment to excellence. Whether you're savoring a prestigious Barolo, an elegant Barbaresco, or a delightful Moscato d'Asti, Piedmont's wines offer a remarkable journey of flavors and a glimpse into the rich winemaking heritage of this captivating region.

Vinous (96)The 2019 Barolo Ginestra Vigna Sorì Ginestra is one of the most elegant wines I have ever tasted from Conterno-Fantino and the Ginestra cru. Ample and broad, with huge intensity, the Sorì Ginestra is stunning. All the Ginestra signatures come through in the glass. The 2019 is deep and vibrant, yet also wonderfully fresh. There is a creaminess in the 2019 that is impossible to miss. This is so impressive. |

Vinous (94)The 2010 Barolo Vigna del Gris is beautiful, layered and expressive. Sweet tobacco, mint, licorice, crushed flowers and plums meld together in a supple, gracious wine for the year. Sweet rose petals and mint add an attractive upper register of trademark aromatics and perfume as the wine opens up in the glass. The 2010 remains dense and compact, but it is impossible to miss that the tannins here are more refined than has typically been the case with the Gris in the past, which is probably the result of vines getting older. The 2010 needs time to unwind, but it is quite pretty and full of potential. Conterno-Fantino gave the 2010 a year in 100% new French oak, followed by a year in a combination of equal parts barrique and cask. |

Wine Advocate (96)Wow, compliments to Conterno Fantino. The newest release of their organic Chardonnay—from a terribly challenging vintage nonetheless—hits it out of the ballpark. The 2023 Langhe Chardonnay Bastía is so exciting to drink thanks to that deftly balanced hint of reduction that adds so much energy and vitality to the wine. This Chardonnay is nervous and raring to go, like a racehorse at the starting line. I love the tension and the medium-plus mouthfeel that adds substance and staying power. Flint, struck match and smoke cede to preserved lemon and spicy saffron. I'm seeing more Italian Chardonnays made in this reductive manner, and I'm falling in love with the grape all over again. |

An invitation to delight the finest palates, the Curto Barolo La Foia Arborina 2017 is a nebbiolo of impeccable composition. Made by Nadia Curto, a fourth-generation vintner, this opulent wine hails from the Arborina Cru vineyards of Barolo, Italy. Possessing a powerful nose of dark fruit and roses, it graces the palate with red cherry, leather, and a hint of cinnamon. The grapes for Curto Barolo La Foia Arborina 2017 are hand-harvested and undergo traditional fermentation before spending two years ageing in oak barrels. This leaves the wine with a firm structure and velvety tannins that only mature Barolo can offer. An enduring finish ties the experience together, providing a charming balance of intensity and elegance. Perfectly embodying the terroir from which it was born, the Curto Barolo La Foia Arborina 2017 is an exceptional testament to the traditional methods of winemaking carried on in the Curto family. |
