Piedmont

Piedmont, located in northwest Italy, is renowned for producing some of the world's most exquisite fine wines. With its breath-taking landscapes, diverse terroir, and a rich winemaking heritage, Piedmont offers a captivating range of wines that captivate the senses. The region is home to legendary vineyards and wineries that have gained global recognition for their exceptional quality.

One of the most famous vineyards in Piedmont is Gaja, a family-owned winery that has played a pivotal role in elevating the region's wines to international acclaim. Their wines, such as Barbaresco and Barolo, are synonymous with excellence and showcase the complexity and elegance of Piedmontese wines. Another esteemed vineyard is Vietti, known for its iconic Barolo wines that beautifully reflect the region's terroir and winemaking traditions.

Piedmont is renowned for its red wines, particularly Barolo and Barbaresco, both made from the Nebbiolo grape. Barolo is often referred to as the "King of Wines" due to its full-bodied structure, intense aromatics, and potential for aging. Notable vineyards like Bruno Giacosa, Giacomo Conterno, and Paolo Scavino craft outstanding Barolo wines that capture the essence of the region. Barbaresco, a neighboring appellation, offers equally exceptional wines with a slightly softer and more approachable character. Renowned vineyards such as Produttori del Barbaresco and Gaja produce remarkable Barbaresco wines that exemplify the region's winemaking prowess.

Piedmont is also famous for its white wine, Moscato d'Asti, a sweet and aromatic wine made from the Moscato grape. Producers such as Michele Chiarlo and Saracco offer delightful Moscato d'Asti wines that are loved for their fragrant bouquet and refreshing sweetness.

Additionally, the region produces other notable wines, including Barbera d'Alba, Dolcetto d'Alba, and Gavi. These wines exhibit unique characteristics that reflect the local terroir and grape varieties.

Piedmont's fine wines are a true expression of artistry and tradition, showcasing the region's commitment to excellence. Whether you're savoring a prestigious Barolo, an elegant Barbaresco, or a delightful Moscato d'Asti, Piedmont's wines offer a remarkable journey of flavors and a glimpse into the rich winemaking heritage of this captivating region.

This is the second year Aleste is produced instead of Cannubi Boschis, however the grapes are exactly the same. The 2014 Barolo Aleste is named after Luciano Sandrone's grandchildren Alessia and Stefano. The 2014 is still wound up and will require extra time to find its footing. The Sandrone family lost 25% of their fruit production in this challenging harvest. The wine offers fragrant notes of wild cherry and cassis with smoke, crushed stone and candied orange peel. The tannins are firm and textured. It is the palate (more than the nose) that requires more time to soften.

The 2014 Barolo Le Vigne once again shows the wisdom of blending fruit from different sites. If there is a vintage where blending has the potential to be the difference-maker, 2014 is it. So it is hardly surprising to find the 2014 Le Vigne in such great shape. The red cherry jam, mint, cedar and floral notes are all finely sketched. Medium in body and classy, the 2014 is beautifully textured and inviting from start to finish. All the elements are simply in the right place. Vineyard sources are Merli, Vignane, Villero and Baudana.

Gravitas and pure power are the signatures of the 2014 Barolo Cerretta. The black cherry, plum, lavender, sage and menthol notes add to an impression of dark, brooding intensity to go with the wine's vertical sense of structure. Tantalise your palate with the sophisticated Marchesi Gresy Barbaresco Gaiun 2014. Masterfully contrived in Piedmont's region of North-West Italy, this ethereal creation boasts complex flavours and exquisite texture. The Marchesi Gresy estate, renowned for its dedication to tradition and innovation, meticulously hand-picked Nebbiolo grapes to produce this exceptional wine. These grapes underwent an 8-day fermentation at 28-30°C, followed by a malolactic fermentation in wood, an ageing period of 24 months in French oak barrels, and an additional 12 months in bottle.

The Marchesi Gresy Barbaresco Gaiun 2014 offers a pleasingly rich nose of balsamic, dark cherries, and dried herbs, accompanied by a unique palate-full of minerally notes, anise, blackberry, and cocoa. A wine that harmonises intensity, elegance and ageing potential beautifully, it is the emblem of the perfection and refinement that the esteemed Marchesi Gresy name symbolises.

The 2014 Barolo Riserva Vigna Rionda is a stunning wine. Sweet, perfumed and deep, the 2014 is off-the-charts great. Dark red and purplish berry fruit, mint, lavender, spice and hard candy infuse the 2014 with striking layers of nuance. But what really impresses about the 2014 is its depth and huge vertical build. All the elements fall into place in a sumptuous, deep Barolo that screams with character. Beams of tannin punctuate the finish. Massolino's 2014 is one of the greatest Vigna Riondas I have ever tasted.

I had tasted this vintage last year as a barrel sample. Now a fully complete wine, the 2014 Barbaresco Riserva Pora did not disappoint, and even jumped up a few points. The Riserva Pora opens to dark fruit intensity with a slightly more accessible quality. Those lovely floral tones of lavender and violet are ever present. After having spent three years in oak and another year in the bottle, this wine offers a looser mouthfeel in terms of tannic structure, making it a bit more open and immediate in personality. You could uncork this bottle in 2020 if you just can't wait, but ideally, it is meant for the longer haul.

The 2014 Barbaresco Riserva Rio Sordo represents a jump forward in structure compared to the other three vineyards (Pora, Pajè and Ovello) that were tasted before this wine. The Riserva Rio Sordo shows a dark and solid personality, with a tight core of black fruit that will relax and unwind with more bottle aging in the cellar. It is also slightly sharper and more focused in terms of mouthfeel, with the kind of tannic tightness you always get with young Nebbiolo in the cooler vintages such as 2014. Barbaresco lovers should jot this one down.

The 2014 Barbaresco Riserva Asili is somber and dense in this vintage. Silky Asili tannins bring out the wine's voluptuousness and soft contours. Dark red cherry and plum fruit show some of the typical Asili sensuality, but the 2014 is a powerhouse that is going to need time to come around. In 2014, Asili is unusually – almost uncharacteristically – austere.

Drawing its fruit from a leased vineyard in Neive, the Roagna 2014 Barbaresco Albesani opens to a medium ruby color with pretty garnet highlights. The wine is redolent of dark fruit, dried cherry, tilled earth and black licorice. There is much more aromatic intensity here than you might expect given the rather subtle and nuanced appearance the wine makes in the glass. The soils in Albesani are fundamentally calcareous, and these conditions add to the perfumed and fragrant qualities you get here. Production for this wine is 230 cases (of 12 bottles each).

The 2014 Barbaresco Crichët Pajè is an absolutely exquisite wine that shows how compelling this vintage is in Barbaresco. Fresh, vibrant and wonderfully deep, the 2014 races out of the glass, showing tremendous depth, energy and pedigree. Crushed red-toned fruit, orange peel, rose petal, anise and mint are some of the many aromas and flavors that develop, but its really the wine's balance that impresses more than anything else. It's a super classic wine from Alfredo and Luca Roagna.

Cinnamon, cedar, sweet pipe tobacco and leather are some of the nuances that emerge from the 2014 Barbaresco Pajè. Pliant and open-knit, the 2014 is surprisingly open for a young Roagna Barbaresco, which makes it almost shockingly easy to enjoy even now (in relative terms), in what is the very early going by Roagna standards. Even, so there is plenty of Nebbiolo structure and tannin. Sweet rose petal, mint, tobacco, underbrush, game, and sweet red berry fruit add to the wine's stunning allure.

The 2014 Barolo Pira is a very pretty wine, but it is also quite open, both in its aromatics, and structural feel, where the wine feels unusually ample. Dark spice, tobacco, worn-in leather and mint are nicely laced together. This is a superb effort for the year, but I would not plan on cellaring it for too long, as it is quite open for a young Barolo, by Roagna standards. Relative to the other wines in this lineup, the Pira comes across as a touch flat and lacking in body. Much of that is attributable to the vintage.

The 2014 Barolo Pira Vecchie Viti is quite delicate and understated for this wine, which also means it will drink well with minimal cellaring. Macerated dark cherry, menthol, licorice, pine, spice, sweet tobacco and leather all develop in the glass. Next to the straight Pira, the Vecchie Vigne has an extra kick of mid-palate sweetness and richness that is quite attractive. For a young Roagna Barolo, the 2014 is very enticing and also accessible.

The 2014 Barolo Cerequio is a gorgeous wine that melds together the pliant fruit of Cerequio with bright, savory aromatics. It’s a combination that works so well. The 2014 is a marvelous, complete Barolo that has so much to offer. Macerated cherry, spice, new leather, blood orange and rose petal all flesh out in a striking Barolo that has so much to offer. One of the first wines I tasted from Voerzio was the 1992 Cerequio, a Barolo from a far weaker vintage that aged beautifully. I expect the 2014 will be gorgeous for many years to come. Of Fratelli Serio & Battista Borgogno's newest releases, the 2014 Barolo Cannubi is the most promising. Despite the difficult vintage, this wine shows integrated fruit with bright layers of sour cherry and cranberry. The mouthfeel is mild and thin, but you don't get that sourness that I tasted in previous editions. This vintage shows a clean and fresh approach instead. The wine is fermented in wood and then aged in large Slavonian oak casks. Some 15,000 bottles were produced (a healthy number for this vintage).

The 2014 vintage encapsulates the artful balance of power and elegance; a complex, layered bouquet of black cherries, summer berries, and earthy undertones is carefully nurtured through 38 months of oak ageing. With its impressive structure and polished tannins, the Palladino Barolo Parafada 2014 compellingly expresses the hallmark traits of Nebbiolo, offering an enchanting finish that resonates of this stellar vintage's noteworthy acidity. A discerning choice for the true wine connoisseur.

This is very spicy and fruity one with perfumed and bright aromas. Leather, too. Medium-bodied, refined and layered with beautiful ripe tannins. Fine, polished texture with berry and walnut undertones. Drink or hold.

The 2014 Barolo Brunate is a powerhouse wine that is going to require at least a few years to shed some of its formidable tannin. Big and ample on the palate, with striking depth, the 2014 captures all of the virile intensity this site is known for. The black cherry, lavender, menthol, licorice and dark spice flavors take on shades of gravitas and exoticism in this deep, structured Barolo from Roberto Voerzio.

I can't wait to see how it ages.

The 2014 Barolo La Serra is bright, floral and energetic, with all of the sinewy tension that is typical of this site. I would cellar the 2014 for at least a few years to allow some of the angular contours to soften. There is a good deal of inner sweetness that will emerge in time. Cedar, sweet pipe tobacco, mint and dried cherry all grace this expressive, savory Barolo from Roberto Voerzio.
