Always an exuberant, richly fruity wine that shows classic Bordeaux hallmarks, this blend of equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot has plenty of black fruits, truffle, graphite and licorice as well as sweet tannins in a medium-bodied, richly fruity, glycerin-endowed style that makes for a very seductive wine meant to be drunk over the next 7-8 years.

Vinous - Neal Martin (91)

The 2019 Petit Bocq offers attractive blackberry, bilberry and light cassis notes, quite well defined and showing more exuberance than the barrel sample. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and plenty of briny black fruit that underlies a sapid finish. This has kicked on nicely over its barrel maturation and I have raised my score accordingly.

Coming from vines near Canon La Gaffelière and mostly Cabernet Franc, the 2021 Château Petit Gravet Aîné is legit good and plays with the big boys in the vintage. Red and black fruits, sappy herbs, flowers, and a kiss of background oak all define the aromatics, and it hits the palate with medium-bodied richness as well as beautiful finesse, balance, fine tannins, and a great finish. Give it a few years and it should keep for 15+ years, if not longer.

The 2014 Petit-Figeac is laced with the essence of sweet dark cherry, plum, tobacco, mint, licorice and leather. Pliant, supple and expressive, it is a highly appealing second wine. This is just as impressive in bottle as it was from barrel.

Decanter (94)

Blackberry notes on the nose, with some herbal perfume touches too that are so appealing. Smooth and softly textured, with chalky nuances and grippy black cherry, strawberry and blackcurrant leaf aspects giving structure and body. Succulent and juicy with mouthwatering freshness. Great vibrancy and drive with life. Super approachable with the same vein of refinement and charm that Figeac does so well.

The 2020 Petit-Figeac has a tightly wound, pencil box-tinged bouquet that suggests there is more than the 10% Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend. It's pretty Left Bank in style. The palate is medium-bodied with a graphite entry that dovetails into a fleshier mid-palate. The 30% new oak is neatly integrated with a healthy dash of black pepper on the finish. Fine.

The 2023 Petit Figeac is just gorgeous. Savory herbs, crushed flowers, mint and orange peel lift a core of red-toned fruit. Medium in body and supremely gracious, the 2023 hits all the right notes while also capturing all the personality of this great Saint-Émilion estate. This is one of the few second wines in Bordeaux that really stands out.

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (90-92)

Bright, deep ruby. Floral, perfumed aromas of blackberry, boysenberry, cherry, violet pastille, mint and shoe polish; I find strong merlot and cabernet character here, which makes for a complex nose indeed. Lush, dense and rather high-pitched; a lovely combination of sheer fruit and finesse. Still youthfully backward, but already shows superb sucrosity and silkiness of texture. Almost no sign of the new oak today. Solidly structured Pomerol, finishing long and subtle, with a note of chocolatey torrefaction. The tannins hit the palate late and coat the back of the mouth. This offers terrific potential.
