Jane Anson Inside Bordeaux (97)

Give this 5 or 10 minutes to open in the glass because it has a pretty serious structure, deftly weighted, full of white pear, quince and apricot pit, balanced by savoury rosemary, straw and fennel notes, successful and totally moreish. A vintage that had the freshness necessary for great white wines in Bordeaux, and Y pulls away from the pack with this wine.

Jane Anson Inside Bordeaux (98)

A great example of this always-arresting dry white, with a ton of soft apple blossom aromatics, before drawing inwards to show scraping acidity, powerful white peach, quince, apricot and citrus flavours with a twist of lime juice, fennel and a salty tang of oyster shell and salted crackers. Has the richness, complexity and concentration that you find in Yquem, and although it won't have quite the same longevity, there is no issue with keeping this wine for 15 to 20 years. 7g/l of residual sugar, mainly from the Sémillon that is picked with the first bloom of botrytis, bringing an opulent, voluptuous feel that transmits the DNA of the property. Spends 12 months in 80% one year old barrels previously used for Château d'Yquem (of course fully washed and prepared, but still imparting a blush of rich flavour), together with 20% new oak. The 2021 vintage in Bordeaux was a better year for whites than reds, and this exceptional white wine is a great example. Last vintage with Sandrine Garbay as winemaker, leaving in 2022.

Composed of 60% Sauvignon Blanc and 40% Sémillon, the 2022 Y d'Yquem has 6 grams per liter of residual sugar. It skips out of the glass with cheery notions of fresh, crunchy pears, allspice, fennel seed, and lime leaves, leading to touches of lemon drops, chalk dust, and white pepper. The medium-bodied palate has a satiny texture and racy backbone with layers of pear and baking spices flavors, finishing on a lingering chalky note.

A relatively new addition to the formidable Clerget portfolio, this predictably over-achieving Bourgogne Chardonnay is sourced from vines acquired as recently as 2022 with their purchase from Domaine Régis Rossignol. Planted right alongside Clerget’s Aligoté vines, therefore on terroir Thibaut already knows intimately, this cuvée encapsulates the signature of white Côte de Beaune in 2023. Richly coloured with golden flecks, the aromas speak to Chardonnay picked at perfect ripeness. Fresh but generous, notions of stone fruits, seashell and crunchy acidity give way to a surprisingly taught structure that will unwind further with a touch of bottle age. Extremely good value given the talent on display from Clerget, this hard-to-find Chardonnay is a great addition in 2023.

Wine Advocate (94)

The 2016 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is showing very well, wafting from the glass with aromas of red plums, candied peel, exotic spices, dark chocolate and creamy new oak. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with a deep core, considerable extract and vibrant acids, framed by notably fine-grained tannins that are very promising for its future evolution. Clerget produced three barrels, one of which was new.

The 2017 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru is another stellar wine from Thibaud Clerget. Energetic and vibrant in the glass, with striking aromatic presence from the 50% whole clusters, the 2017 is spot-on. Bright floral notes add lift to a core of finely-sculpted red cherry/plum fruit. The 2017 is an impressive wine in the making.

The 2018 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru comes from the lieu-dit of Les Grand Maupertui (the same as Anne Gros). Matured in 50% new oak with 50% whole bunch, it has a perfumed bouquet of incense and rose petal scents filtering through the brambly red fruit. The medium-bodied palate offers firm, grippy tannins. A little saline in style, with a powerful, almost burly finish that will require several years just to smooth down its edges.

Matured with 50% whole bunches and 50% new oak, the 2019 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru is blessed with an exquisite bouquet of mineral-rich raspberry and cranberry fruit, hints of orange blossom and Asian spice. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle but insistent grip on the entry. A little chalky in texture, this is very well defined with plenty of energy palpable on the pesistent finish. This is a superb Clos Vougeot, the most intellectual of Clerget’s 2019s.

The 2016 Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens is also quite reserved, offering up aromas of sweet red berries, dark soil tones and spicy new oak. It's a promising Rugiens in the making but it will demand some patience.

Pommard Les Rugiens 1er Cru is dense, flashy and voluptuous, yet also very much in the mid-weight style that defines the Clerget wines in 2017. Super-ripe red cherry and strawberry fruit open up first, with attractive floral and spiced notes that develop later. Fleshy and inviting, the Pommard will be virtually impossible to resist upon release.

Matured with 20% whole bunch and the same level of new oak, the 2018 Pommard Les Rugiens 1er Cru has an elegant, refined bouquet that gradually unfurls to reveal blackberry, briar and light wild strawberry scents, the stems lending a little pepperiness. This is an outstanding Les Rugiens, one of the best you will find this vintage.

Bright red with ruby tones. Alluring scents of black cherry, violet and crushed stone (wines from this vineyard always smell dark and dense, says Clerget). Sappy and densely packed, conveying an almost chocolatey quality to its black cherry and dark raspberry fruit flavors. Lovely harmonious acidity and chewy but sweet palate-dusting tannins give this wine a solid structural underpinning. The yield here was below 20 hectoliters per hectare due to the frost. I would not be surprised if this wine surpassed the estate's 2015.

The 2017 Volnay En Carelle Sous La Chapelle 1er Cru has a slightly disjointed bouquet that requires only a couple of minutes to gain focus and delineation, though the aromatics lack the vibrancy and purity of the succeeding vintage. The palate is medium-bodied with pretty red cherry and red plum fruit, coming across a little conservative toward the finish, but boy, does this meliorate with aeration! After a couple of hours it suddenly goes up through the gears, developing more precision and harmony than it had immediately after opening. My score reflects this Volnay in full flight.
