The 2015 Croix Cardinale offers good up-front intensity in its red cherry jam, mint, plum and lavender flavors but then loses some persistence through the midpalate and finish. The 2015 is certainly a solid wine, but I had hoped for more. The blend is 72% Merlot and 28% Cabernet Franc.Inc. TAX€451.15 -

The 2016 Croix Cardinale has attractive wild strawberry, raspberry coulis and light floral tones on the nose, which feels pure and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin and a fine bead of acidity, and cohesive in the mouth, displaying well-integrated oak on the finish. Afford it five years in bottle and it should turn into an upstanding Saint-Émilion.Inc. TAX€444.67 -

Decanter (93)
A clear step up in richness, polish and texture. 80% new oak at this point. In these kind of vintages though, it is noteworthy that you have to climb this high to really be assured of getting a bottle that impresses and that lives up to the expectations of the appellation and château. Lovely damson fruits here. Will be ready to drink earlier than the monumental 2016, but you are getting a slick, well defined wine with plenty of great fruit. There is an austerity at this point, in that you feel the tannins closing in towards the finish, but this is the one I would happily recommend.Inc. TAX€266.88 -

Just as it was en primeur, the 2018 La Croix Ducru-Beaucaillou is rich, sensual and enveloping. Silky tannins wrap around a core of blackberry jam, chocolate, spice, lavender and new leather. All the elements are so well balanced in this sumptuous, racy Saint-Julien. A warm growing season yielded small berries and heady, concentrated flavors. This is such a gorgeous wine. The blend is 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot.Inc. TAX€300.94 -

The 2019 La Croix Ducru Beaucaillou is endowed with a gorgeous, quite sumptuous bouquet loaded with black plum, tobacco, smoke and Earl Grey aromas that burst from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with very pliant tannin, harmonious and velvety in texture, gradually building towards a detailed and mineral-driven finish. Maybe less opulent than the 2018 by comparison, yet a Deuxième Vin full of breeding.Inc. TAX€492.41 -

The 2022 Croix De Beauséjour (Duffau-Lagarrosse) is based on 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc brought up in 50% new French oak. It’s a juicy, lively, elegant second wine that has lovely cherry and darker fruits as well as some lively floral and herbal nuances. Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Croix de Labrie offers scents of wild blueberries, Black Forest cake and kirsch with touches of garrigue and tilled soil plus a waft of stewed tea. This estate continues to fire on all cylinders, and their 2017 Chateau Croix De Labrie is stunning stuff. Loaded with notions of creme de cassis, graphite, crushed violets, chocolate, and a kiss of classic Saint-Emilion minerality, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, polished tannins, a stacked mid-palate, and a great finish. It's another killer wine from this tiny, family-run estate that readers should snatch up. I suspect it will be even better with 2-4 years of bottle age and cruise for two decades.Inc. TAX€915.07 -

The 2019 Château Croix De Labrie is gorgeous and jumps out in the vintage. Almost all Merlot brought up in new barrels, it offers a beautiful bouquet of red and black currants, spicy oak, dried herbs, and flowers, with a beautiful loamy earth and chalky minerality emerging with time in the glass. With remarkable purity and finesse, it's full-bodied, has a great mid-palate, silky tannins, and a great finish.
