The 2018 Volnay Les Caillerets 1er Cru was picked at 20hl/ha due to widespread millerandage that produced tiny berries, according to Clerget. This is completely de-stemmed and raised in 30% new oak. It has a vigorous, intense bouquet of red and black fruit mixed with loamy aromas and undergrowth, a touch of incense emerging with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins and a superb bead of acidity. Very succulent and voluminous in the mouth, perhaps just needing a little more bite and definition on the finish, but certainly very persistent. Lovely harmonious acidity and chewy but sweet palate-dusting tannins give this wine a solid structural underpinning. The yield here was below 20 hectoliters per hectare due to the frost.
