  • Samuel Billaud Chablis Fourchaumes 2020 (12x75cl)

    Burghound (90-92)

(from a .25 ha parcel in Vaupoulent). A ripe yet classically styled nose is comprised by notes of mineral reduction, sea breeze, iodine and citrus peel. There is outstanding intensity to the voluminous and powerful yet reasonably refined flavors that terminate in a sappy and lingering finish. This could use better complexity though a few years of cellaring should help in that regard. (90-92)/2026+

There is even better Chablis character to the more elegant and cooler array of green apple, acacia blossom, oyster shell and quinine-infused aromas. I very much like the mouthfeel of the refined and intense middleweight flavors that brim with both minerality and dry extract, both of which are present on the impressively complex and strikingly long finale. This is extremely stylish with the innate finesse of a reference standard Blanchot.

  • Samuel Billaud Chablis Grand Cru Preuses 2023 (1x75cl)

    Vinous - Neal Martin (95)

The 2023 Chablis Les Preuses Grand Cru comes from 60-year-old vines that were cropped at around 45 hl/ha. This leans slightly more toward the tropical side of the fruit spectrum, although the mineralité still floods through. The palate is well balanced with a keen thread of acidity and a patina of new oak that's cohesive with the fruit. This is edgy and surfeit with energy on the finish. The 2023 is excellent.

  • Sanctus 2005 (12x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (93)

From a special 7.5 acre parcel culled from the Bienfaisance vineyard, this 1,000-case cuvee is dominated by its Merlot component (the blend also includes some Cabernet Franc). As are most of St.-Emilion’s garigiste wines, it is given a Burgundian-like treatment of pre-fermentation cold maceration, malolactic in barrel, aging on its lees, and little clarification, all designed to accentuate the terroir, and enhance the wine’s texture and perfume. The stunningly perfumed 2005 offers up notions of toast, black cherry jam, blackberries, espresso roast, white chocolate, and juicy meat. It is full-bodied as well as opulent for the vintage, with a gorgeous texture, and a long, 35+ second finish. Consume it over the next 15 or more years.

A blend of 85% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, and the balance Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2017 Chateau Sansonnet is another beautiful wine from the talented Marie-Benedicte Lefevere. With loads of creme de cassis and black raspberry fruit as well as notes of leafy herbs, flowers, and spicy oak, it hits the palate with medium to full body, a beautiful sense of elegance and purity, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It doesn't have the density or breadth of the 2016, but it’s a remarkable wine in the vintage. A blend of 85% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, and 7% Cabernet Sauvignon that was brought up in new oak, it’s going to evolve gracefully for 20-25 years or more.

Another beautiful wine from the Lefévère family that does everything right, the 2019 Château Sansonnet has a textbook Saint-Emilion bouquet of chalky minerality, ripe red and black fruits, notes of truffle and flowers, medium to full body, and beautiful overall balance. In the past, this wine has had a glossy, slightly modern style (in a good sense), but the 2019 has an incredibly classic feel with its oak nicely integrated and just a liquid rock-like minerality on the finish. It's a gorgeous wine that will benefit from 2-4 years of bottle age and keep for over two decades.
