Vinous (89+)More complex aromas of strawberry, smoke, minerals, truffle and coffee. Larger-scaled and riper in the mouth; also considerably fresher than the Bonnes-Mares. But backward today, and faintly medicinal on the finish. The tannins build with aeration. This will need time. |

Vinous (98)A spellbinding bottle of Mugnier’s 1999 Musigny Grand Cru rounds out the evening. So complex and beguiling, the 1999 is at once light on its feet and quite deep, with terrific freshness and breathtaking balance. Aeration brings out further layers of dimension. The 1999 is at times quite cerebral, while in other moments it is more overtly virile. Like all truly great wines, every taste reveal a different facet of its personality. What a thrill it is to drink this with a group of my closest friends. |

Vinous (93)The famously hot vintage announces itself right out of the glass: explosive blackberry and blueberry fruit. Yes, it’s ripe but not ridiculously so. Picked September 1st. Despite a bit of residual tannin, this is developing surprisingly well and may continue to do so. |

Vinous (97)Another difficult vintage that produced a brilliant wine. This Musigny has developed a spicy nose with hints of tobacco. Very round but not overripe. Somehow this seems both bitter and sweet at the same time, yin and yang, with red and black fruit. Seems to combine the virtues of ripe and cool vintages. |

Jancis Robinson (19.5)Some vines planted in 1940s and others between 1958 and 1963. Extraordinary nose that is hugely intense and then on the palate there’s an array of flowers, red fruits and chestnut. Masses of juice. Strong texture and grainy tannins on the end and enormous power. Depth yet grace. Real refinement. |

Wine Advocate (96)The 2014 Musigny Grand Cru is just being released. Wafting from the glass with aromas of rose petals, Egyptian musk, orange rind, peonies, warm spices and red berries, it's full-bodied, velvety and perfumed, with superb concentration, lively acids and fine, powdery tannins that still assert themselves on the long, penetrating and gently chalky finish. This is a brilliant Musigny, but while Mugnier has done some of the work for his clients by aging the wine at the domaine for seven or eight years, it still demands a decade of additional patience. |

Decanter (97)This compellingly beautiful wine opens with aromas that include a piercing, lemony fruit, salty minerality, chalk, smoke and spice. On the palate, there is a beautiful tension, but also enough substance to give the wine breadth and a lovely, impressive length. It is structured and very crisp, yet still approachable and easy to drink. It was produced from a blend of the lieux-dits Le Cotet and Les Paluets, exclusively fermented in tank. There is immense ageing potential here and you’ll be rewarded for keeping it. |
