The 2020 Les Mémoires is a round and elegant Cabernet Franc. It's a not-trying-hard wine that exudes a sense of calm and ease as it rolls around your mouth seamlessly. Maybe it's the 100-year-old vines doing their thing. There's no oak getting in the way, allowing the purity of fruit to shine. It remains true to its variety and place, while its light spice meets dark fruits. Forget the fruit flavors, this is all about refined texture and its fine, chalky, powdery veil of tannins lightly coating the palate. Long and textural, this is not a wine you'll regret...Inc. From vines planted on clay-limestone in 1904, the 2021 Les Mémoires is fragrant, refined and long. It offers up rich concentration within an elegant, rather delicate package. As you'd expect from a wine of this age, it's youthful and bright, with primary fruit aromas of redcurrant alongside florals, black olive and even a whiff of wood smoke. There's certainly depth and substance of tannin, but they melt in your mouth. The finish is refined and assured, with scintillating acidity providing a fabulous backbone.Inc. TAX€243.37 -

From the commune Chacé and the lieu-dit Les Poyeux and vines averaging 35 to 45 years old rooting in a calcareous terroir, the 2019 Saumur Champigny Terres Chaudes opens with a lovely fresh and aromatic bouquet of perfectly ripe and concentrated dark and red berries that intermingle with peppery and discreet nougat notes. Lush and silky on the palate, this is a beautifully fruity Cabernet Franc with a serious tannin structure and a salty-vital, refreshing, pure and crunchy finish. A really fabulous wine that is irresistible. Tasted in June 2021.Inc. TAX€200.88 -

The 2022 Guigne-Chèvres is sophisticated and suave and made with very smart use of oak. This wine is all about its texture rather than its aromatics, which, while ripe and offering substance, is elegant and effortless. A wine that has been allowed to do its thing.Inc. TAX€537.12 -

Usually the Vacheron reds spend a year in bottle before release, but the 2020 Sancerre Rouge tasted so good early on that Jean-Laurent Vacheron released it without the extra age. It's very pale ruby and rather seductive, offering a round, silken and incredibly elegant style. Undeniably Pinot Noir with its attractive floral and red fruited perfume, alongside savory notes and tea leaf characters. It has a lovely chalky coating and finely textured tannins that will leave you licking the inside of your mouth. Unforced and charming but my only quibble is the rather warming dab of alcohol right at the finish.Inc. TAX€303.29 -

From low-yielding Cabernet Franc vines that average 45 years of age and root in the silex clay soils of the côte, the 2019 Bourgueil Le Grand Clos opens with a pure, fine and intense, concentrated but also aromatic and fragrant bouquet of dark and red fruits and crushed stones along with refreshing lemony and spicy notes. Round and very elegant on the palate, this is a beautifully balanced Grand Clos with a concentrated finish with tight but fine tannins and a fresh acidity that gives a positive astringency. The aftertaste is long and intense but always in balance and underlines the remarkable finesse of this wine that aged for 12 to 18 months in 400-liter tonneaux. Tasted in June 2021.Inc. TAX€247.43 -

From vines averaging 45 years of age on the slopes of the Coteau and aged in oak barrels for 20 months, the 2018 Bourgueil Les Quartiers opens with a deep, intense and toasty bouquet of ripe, black berries and blackcurrants intermixed with spicy tones, cigar box and graphite. Silky, refined and fresh on the palate, this is an elegant, tight but vivacious, silky-textured Cabernet Franc with crystalline tannins and a long finish that is still oak-influenced in its flavors, but the structure, finesse and intensity and the very delicate raspberry flavor in the aftertaste indicate excellent aging potential. Personally, I prefer the crus that were partly aged in stoneware (amphorae) and also for a shorter period, whereas Les Quartiers represents the old Amirault style, before 2014.Inc. TAX€370.08
