Vinous (94+)

The 2017 Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru is very stubborn and closed on the nose, then opens wonderfully to offer red cherries, wild strawberry and pomegranate scents, but frustratingly, it ebbs away with further aeration. Very mercurial. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit and fine depth and grip, delivering admirable precision on the finish. It will need a few years to settle down, but it should come good in the end. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.

Vinous (94+)

The 2018 Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru has an outstanding bouquet of vibrant black cherry and boysenberry fruit suffused with minerals. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit on the entry, maybe just a little closed after bottling at the moment, but demonstrating good grip and a strong marine influence on the finish. Give this 3–4 years in bottle.

Vinous (93-95)

The 2020 Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru has a wonderful bouquet with vibrant red berry fruit, tertiary notes, touches of incense and rosemary. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannins on the entry, fine acidity, structured with good substance, saline, almost briny towards the long finish. Superb.

Vinous (91-93)

The 2021 Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru has a backward bouquet; a mixture of red and black fruit, quite estuarine and needing a little more coherence. Hints of Seville orange marmalade. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannins, a healthy sprinkling of white pepper here and a nicely detailed yet slightly conservative finish.

Burghound (92-95)

(from vines planted in 1955). A strikingly elegant if restrained nose is comprised by notes of red and dark currant, forest floor, exotic tea and an abundance of floral hints. There is both fine intensity and an almost aggressive minerality to the chiseled medium-bodied flavors that possess an appealing texture before concluding in a moderately austere and refreshing finish that also displays just a touch of warmth. This is a very classy wine that should also amply repay mid to longer-term keeping.

Wine Advocate (94)

The 2011 Châteauneuf du Pape Omnia is a smoking blend of 80% Grenache, 10% Syrah and 10% Mourvedre that was fermented with 100% whole-cluster and aged two years in barrels, on lees, and never racked. It offers up a gorgeous perfume of sweet black cherries, kirsch liqueur, garrigue, crushed flowers and toasted spice that gives way to full-bodied richness, solid mid-palate depth and building tannin that emerges on the finish. While this has the vintage's more supple nature, I love the depth and richness on the palate, and it will evolve gracefully for at least 10-12 years. James Suckling (98)

I tasted this and I thought of the great Rayas from the late 1980s. Full body, bright fruit and a creamy texture. Its purity of fruit is amazing with dark berry, spice, meat and dried flowers. The first vintage of this was 2009. Made from old vines planted in the 1940s. Aged three years in demi mouie. Very low sulfur too. Drink or hold

This is cut from different cloth, with beguiling loganberry, açai berry and raspberry fruit seamlessly melded with dried star anise, singed cinnamon and black tea notes, all carried by substantial yet remarkably silky tannins. A light echo of iron pervades the finish, adding extra cut to the copious fruit and spice elements. Hard to resist now but should cruise in the cellar. Drink now through 2032. 350 cases made.

Tasting like a Grand Cru from Chambertin, the 2013 Châteauneuf-Du-Pape Arioso is 100% Grenache from the Pignan plateau that spent three years in barrel, on lees, before being bottled unfined and unfiltered. Black cherry, forest floor, spring flowers, damp earth, and spice all flow to a medium-bodied, ethereally textured, seamless 2013 that opens up beautifully with time in the glass. Again, this is unquestionably a Burgundy lover’s Châteauneuf, and it shines more for its nuance, elegance, and complex more so than outright power and richness. With bright, yet integrated acidity and ample, sweet tannin, it’s a sensational 2013 and one of the best from the vintage.

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (88)

Deep, bright ruby-red. Musky, rather wild aromas of black raspberry, espresso, chocolate, leather and meat. Sweet, soft and stuffed with raspberry, plum and leather flavors. A pliant midweight that finishes with a fine dusting of tannins and lingering notes of leather and pepper.

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (90-92)

The 2013 Rouget is wonderfully dark and fleshy in the glass. Sweet, layered and impeccable, the 2013 impresses for its depth and juiciness. The new oak is a bit present at the moment, but that should not be too much of an issue over time. The style is extroverted, racy and ripe, and it all works beautifully here. What a pretty wine this is. Tasted twice.

There is a wealth of great French wine outside the ‘Big 4’ (Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne and Rhone). The Languedoc Roussillon with it’s herby, robust Mediterranean reds, Provence with its pale, vinous roses, Loire with its flinty Sauvignons, crunchy Cabernet Francs, and endlessly fascinating Chenins, Jura with its old fashioned curiosities… the list goes on. Tradition and terroir are the veins running through them all, making French wines still the most emulated in the world.
