Vinous (89-91)(Liger-Belair just bought this parcel on mostly clay and silt soil after years of farming it via a fermage arrangement; 50% vendange entier; just 20% of the crop was lost to frost): Dark red with ruby tones. Very ripe dark fruit aromas are complicated by strong soil notes of dried flowers (the veggie side of floral, says Liger-Belair), licorice and cut straw. More precise on the palate than the nose suggests, displaying the savory, sappy side of the vintage and very good intensity. Finishes with building, slightly dusty tannins and noteworthy energy. Not at all a rustic style of Gevrey, despite the fact that it's from a parcel on the wrong side of the Route Nationale. |

Vinous (89-91)The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Croix des Champs is more than 55% whole cluster. That stem addition comes across a little strongly on the nose and occludes the terroir profile. The medium-bodied palate offers firm tannins, plenty of red berry fruit laced with orange peel and slathers of marmalade, and a grippy finish with a light cola note on the aftertaste. Fine. |

Thibault Liger-Belair Hautes Cotes Nuits Roche 2018 is an astounding example of Burgundian elegance, hailing from the globally renowned Liger-Belair estate. Thibault Liger-Belair, a prodigious winemaker, utilises his deep reverence for tradition and innovative viticulture to create this luxurious red wine. Nestled in the illustrious Hautes-Côtes de Nuits region, the grapes benefit from clay and limestone-rich soils and cool climate, producing opulent flavours and aromatic complexity. Meticulously hand-harvested and predominantly fermented with indigenous yeasts, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation before maturing in French oak barrels, fostering its distinctive profile. This 2018 vintage impresses with a bouquet of black fruits, subtle spices and earthy undertones, underscored by a balanced acidity and well-rounded tannins. The Thibault Liger-Belair Hautes Cotes Nuits Roche 2018's enchanting character and superior structure make it a must-have addition to any fine wine collection. |

Vinous (89-91)(40% vendange entier; 50% new oak; just six barrels were produced from one hectare of vines exposed to the combe influence): Bright, dark red. Dark cherry, dark berries and a hint of flowers on the nose. Sappy dark fruit flavors convey an impression of solidity, with an element of warm spices and smoky limestone extending the finish and supporting the wine's serious dusting of tannins. Liger-Belair feels that owing to low yields, many Nuits-Saint-Georges '16s from vineyards on the north side of the town are more burly and masculine than usual. |

Wine Advocate (93)Smoky black tea, beef bouillon, raw venison, biter cherry pit and ripe blackberry make for a striking nose to Liger-Belair's 2009 Nuits-St.-Georges Les St.-Georges. Firm in feel, and with its dense meat and bitter-edged black fruit underlain by a sensation of crushed stone, this manages to avoid austerity – and, more remarkably, opacity – thanks to its primary juicy freshness; sweet, high-toned inner-mouth esters suggestive of distilled fruits; and to a wealth of mineral nuances (marine, crustacean, peaty) that manage to shine through in a penetrating and resplendent finish. I would not plan to revisit it for a couple of years, and expect it will be worth following for at least 8-10. |
