Vinous (92-94)The 2017 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru is much more reserved on the nose compared to the Charmes-Chambertin, the fruit a little darker. There is something of a crushed-pebble, almost beach-like scent, a distant tang of cockle sheds that surfaces with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin and a little more depth and grip than the Charmes-Chambertin, even if it does not quite display the same sensuality and flesh on the finish. Good potential. |

Burghound (93-96)Don't Miss! An exuberantly spicy nose is comprised primarily of assorted red berries, floral nuances and wisps of earth, the sauvage and sandalwood. There is a cool and restrained mouth feel to the mineral-tinged and attractively pure medium-bodied flavors that are a beguiling combination of power and refinement on the balanced and strikingly persistent finish. The Chapelle is a lovely effort but there is quite simply another dimension of complexity present here. Note that while this is very firmly structured there is so much dry extract present that this should be approachable after only 6 to 8 years if desired though it should amply reward 15 to 20. 2028+ |

Outrageously dense and intense on entry, then brilliantly delineated, penetrating and sweet in the middle palate, with its tangy red berry and earth flavors enlivened by building notes of menthol, rose petal and Oriental spices. With its uncanny energy and complexity and its unflagging finishing thickness, this noble, electric wine has all the elements for greatness. (And I could drink it today for its perfect balance and digestibility!) |

Large-scaled, silky and mouthfilling without any undue weight, conveying a higher-pH impression than most of the other '16s here--but Perrot-Minot assured me that it's not above 3.45. Boasts serious thickness of texture leavened by smoky soil tones. Superrich, palate-staining, aristocratic wine with a great future. |

It gains intensity in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied but with great substance and depth than the Clos de Bèze; there is a keen line of acidity cutting through the intense red berry fruit, and wonderful mineralité and tension on the finish. It just gradually gains in intensity before it fans out with a sense of confidence and entitlement, as befitting a Chambertin. This is a superb wine. |

Vinous (94-96)The 2017 Chambertin Grand Cru has the most backward and surly nose of Christophe Perrot-Minot’s Grand Crus, but it just needs a few swirls to reveal enticing raspberry, cranberry, brown spice and slightly ferrous aromas. The mineralité starts to reveal itself with aeration. The medium-bodied palate offers supple tannin, gorgeous pure raspberry preserve notes mixed with blood orange, sea salt and light quince, and marmalade notes toward the succinct finish. Predictably as it might read, this is the best 2017 from Perrot-Minot. |

There is a wealth of great French wine outside the ‘Big 4’ (Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne and Rhone). The Languedoc Roussillon with it’s herby, robust Mediterranean reds, Provence with its pale, vinous roses, Loire with its flinty Sauvignons, crunchy Cabernet Francs, and endlessly fascinating Chenins, Jura with its old fashioned curiosities… the list goes on.
