Vinous (93-96)(the crop level here was in the healthy 30-to-35-hectoliters-per-hectare range; entirely destemmed, as with the Chambertin, as Boillot was concerned that the stems were a bit green): Healthy dark red. Reticent, slightly medicinal aromas of cherry, flowers, spices and stone. Compellingly silky, fine-grained wine with terrific punch and lift; more explosive on the palate in the early going than the Clos Vougeot and classier too. Finishes refined and very long, with rather delicate tannins and terrific subtle flavor intensity and lift. This wine aged in 100% new oak but is not marked by the wood. It should enjoy a long life in bottle but there's nothing hard about it today. |

Henri finds lime blossom, which adds a further lick of freshness to the vibrant cherries. The fruit continues on the palate long after the fine tannins. Promising. Drink from 2032-2040. Full, sweet and harmonious, with great lift and definition to its sappy black cherry and licorice flavors. Really compellingly sweet and palate-coating for a 2008. The fine-grained tannins contribute to the impression of precision on the explosive, vibrant back end. Boillot told me he did a selection in 2008 but that it was to eliminate pink grapes, as there was almost no rot. |

Wild flowers, sweet tobacco and violets lead to a core of dark red/blackish fruit in a Burgundy that pulses with incredible energy and vitality. Wonderfully resonant on the palate, the 2012 captures the essence of site and vintage as expressed through the signature richness of Henri Boillot's deeply personal style. Rich deep purple black. This is certainly ripe, perhaps even a gamey quality. Freshens up in the glass. Huge fruit weight here, dark notes but actually a core of pure red fruit beneath. Vinous - Neal Martin (92)The 2021 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru offers ripe raspberry and blackcurrant scents on the nose. It has fine presence and detail, with the oak neatly enmeshed and delineated. With time, it develops minty aromas that are excess to requirements. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins and ripe red berry fruit, with just the faintest green edge, which dovetails into a peppery but nicely controlled finish. Quite an alluring Clos de Vougeot. I would afford this a year or two in bottle. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting. |

There is a wealth of great French wine outside the ‘Big 4’ (Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne and Rhone).
