Emmanuel Brochet’s NV Le Mont Benoit (2019 base) continues, year after year, to reaffirm its position as one of the most able exponents of this distinctive chalk outcropping on the plain west of the Montagne de Reims. Serving as an eloquent ambassador for its southeast-facing vineyard, this cuvée encapsulates sense of place, artisinal character and precision all at once. I began following Brochet’s work over a decade ago, and as critical acclaim for his wines has steadily—and deservedly—increased, I’ve found even greater joy in savoring bottles opened by friends, keeping the few remaining for myself. The 2019-base Le Mont Benoit, incorporating 20% reserve wines, continues to impress. It rises from the glass with an evocative bouquet of beeswax, crisp red apple and dried white flowers, mingling with nuances of brioche and peeled almond. On the palate, it is full-bodied, concentrated and profoundly layered, with a generous core of fruit enlivened by abundant chalky structuring extract and mouthwatering acidity that lends it vitality and structure and carries through the searingly saline finish. This is one of the most dazzling interpretations of this vineyard to date.Inc. TAX€227.16 -
Exuding the character of the illustrious Mont Benoit terroir, the Emmanuel Brochet Mont Benoit Extra Brut NV stands as a testament to the masterful craftsmanship of vigneron Emmanuel Brochet. Harvested from a single plot mere 2.5 hectares in size, this unfettered Champagne is a distinctive blend primarily encompassing Pinot Meunier, skilfully intertwined with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Equally worth noting is the wine’s lengthy and meticulous production process. The grapes are handpicked, the fermentation takes place in aged oak, and the wine is manually disgorged and bottled without additional dosage. Expect a profound depth of fruit, apt acidity, and an air of minerality, leading to a refreshingly long finish. The Emmanuel Brochet Mont Benoit Extra Brut NV embodies elegance, complexity, and singularity, imbuing every sip with a taste of the Champagne region’s hallowed grounds.

100% Pinot Noir blend based on 2013. Disgorged September 2018. Dosage 3.5 g/l. Tasted immediately after the all-Pinot Noir Roses de Jeanne 2017 and it's more obviously oaky and savoury on the nose. Rather like the stereotypical Bollinger with lots to chew on – meaty, stereotypically 'masculine'. Very complete and not remotely austere. Dense but also manages to be vibrant and refreshing. Bright yellow-gold. An intriguingly perfumed nose evokes poached pear, orange zest, sweet butter and honey, along with a smoky quality and a chalky mineral overtone. Chewy, very deep citrus and orchard fruit flavors are complicated by suggestions of toasted brioche, white truffle and candied fig. Finishes very long and smoky, with resonating floral and mineral qualities. I'd serve this complex Champagne, which comprises wines from 15 different vintages dating back to 1995, with an indulgent, buttery poultry or shellfish dish.Inc. TAX€566.17 -

Exhibit A in the case for Bedel and her obscure terroir must be a NV Brut Entre Ciel et Terre, which places Meunier in something more like its usual supporting role, letting Chardonnay and Pinot step forward. Jasmine, green tea, lime, grapefruit, and white currant inform a brightly penetrating yet subtly perfumed nose, whose elements are joined on a palpably lees-enriched yet vivacious and consummately refreshing palate by nut oils, smoky toasted grain and saliva-liberating salinity. A subtle sense of textural oiliness reinforces the nut and citrus oil aspects but without deflecting any of this wine’s effusive juiciness or dimming the invigorating tang incorporated in a mouthwateringly long finish tinged with iodine. I suspect this will merit following for at least another 4-5 years.Inc. TAX€472.54 -

Light, bright yellow. Pungent, highly aromatic bouquet evokes peach nectar, poached pear, vanilla and honeysuckle. Deeply pitched orchard and pit fruit flavors show very good intensity and lift, picking up spiciness with air. Finishes on a suave floral note, with impressive focus and length. In Bond€104.00 -

I suspect this will merit following for at least another 4-5 years. In Bond€370.00 -

Based on 75% Pinot Meunier, 15% Chardonnay and 5% Pinot Noir (30- to 60-year-old vines, mainly picked in 2011), the NV Origin'elle is a pretty good representative of both the plantings on the biodynamically farmed 8.4 hectares; these vineyards are located in the most western part of the Marne valley. The wine is made in the special style of Françoise Bedel and her son Vincent, whose wines are kept on the lees for almost one year (in this case in enameled tanks). Straw-golden in color and clear and aromatic on the intense and pretty rich nose, this is a full and round, yet delicate and silky textured fizz. It has a long and aromatic finish. Although the wine seems to be rich and fat at first, it is in fact full-flavored but pure and finesse-full. The finish is clear and fresh, and reveals a nice mineral grip. This is an excellent Champagne as an aperitif, but also with food.In Bond€331.00 -
