Burgundy
When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.
At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.
Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.
For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.
In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

Wine Advocate (92-94)The 2014 Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru les Vaucrains has a stylish bouquet with ebulliant red cherry, strawberry and cold stone scents that are beautifully defined. The palate is ripe and sensual on the entry with a keen line of acidity. The tannin here really express the propitious nature of les Vaucrains, imparting impressive detail and precision on the long, sustained finish. Superb! |

Vinous (90-92)Medium red. Less fruity and more medicinal on the nose than the Vaucrains, offering complex scents of dark raspberry, dried flowers, mocha and earth. Then plush, silky and fine-grained on the palate, offering lovely floral lift to its raspberry fruit. The firm tannins turn a touch dry with air. (This cuvée is not vinified by Jadot.) |

Vinous (92-94)The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Saint-Georges 1er Cru has a classy bouquet of vibrant red berry fruit, sous-bois and brown spice aromas that gain intensity in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins. A fine-boned, focused Les Saint-Georges with admirable precision and mineralité on the finish. This is a step up from the Les Vaucrains. Excellent. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (89-91)The 2023 Pernand-Vergelesses Clos de la Croix de Pierre 1er Cru is actually a step up from the preceding pair of Savigny's, with more precision, finely assimilated oak and a subtle pressed flower element emerging with aeration. This articulates its limestone soil. The palate is well balanced as vibrant, citrus-fresh red fruit laced with orange peel leads to a nicely controlled and quite elegant finish. An affordable introduction to the 2023 Burgundy vintage? Step this way. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (90-92)The 2022 Pernand-Vergelesses Clos de la Croix de Pierre has more detail and terroir expression than the Combottes: well-defined with crushed stone and dried yellow flowers complementing the citrus fruit. The palate is well-balanced with a waxy texture. A dash of white pepper enlivens this Pernand, which fans out nicely on the finish. One of my picks from Jadot's whites this year. |

Vinous (91+)Bright medium red. Floral and peppery high notes to the aromas of red berries, medicinal red cherry, iron and herbs. Offers very good density and a fine-grained texture, showing a subtle sweetness to its red berry, spice and menthol flavors. Lovely inner-mouth definition and lift here: this wine really showcases the raciness of the vintage. This juicy, fruity but also minerally Rugiens finishes with a very fine dusting of tannins that reach the front teeth and attractive floral lift. Still a baby. |

Vinous (91-93)The 2020 Puligny-Montrachet Les Combettes 1er Cru has a clean and precise bouquet with beautifully defined citrus fruit laced with crushed stone. The palate is well balanced with good depth and grip, slightly waxy in style, fine acidity with touches of tangerine and orange pith towards the finish. Thoroughly enjoyable, this should age well in bottle. Closure: Diam |

Vinous (93)The 2017 Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières 1er Cru is well defined on the nose, fresh and taut, with an abiding sense of purity and delineation. Joyous aromatics! The palate is crisp on the entry and well balanced, although this is the one Folatières where I find the oak impedes and rather occludes the terroir, rendering it unnecessarily generic compared to its peers, though the creaminess is seductive. The success of this wine depends on how well it can eat up that oak, and given its melioration in glass, my score reflects my optimism. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Savigny-lès-Beaune. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-96)5 Star Wine. There will be no En la Richarde Folatières from Héritiers Louis Jadot this year, but this bottling is superb. A little more toastiness on the nose. This builds beautifully to the back of the palate, showing an excellent backbone with just the right elegance of minerality. Really good. Bravo Drink from 2026-2033. Tasted: October 2022 |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-96)(5 Star Wine) Mid lemon yellow, with a concentrated bouquet that has less immediate charm than the Clos de la Garenne. However, there is significant weight on the palate, some yellow plums, while the acidity has an attractive mineral touch. My conclusion is that this Folatières is just very backward. Everything is there to make a great wine, and In the end the more exciting wine of two excellent Pulignys. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: October 2023. |
