Burgundy

When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.

At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.

Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.

For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.

In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

Vinous (90-93)

(Ente's brother Benoit used to make this wine; from vines planted in 1957): Exotic pineapple and lichee scents are lifted by flowers, spices and noble herbs. Broad and round, conveying a strong impression of dry extract and old-vines reserve. The driest of this set of 2015s and very backward: this wine will need time to fill in and express itself. Tricky to taste today.

The 2015 Volnay Les Santenots-du-Milieu 1er Cru has a clenched fist of a nose; the aromas are there, but it is almost as if this Volnay wants to keep the aromatics for itself instead of bestowing them upon the imbiber. Perhaps the best adjective is “selfish.” The palate is very well balanced with fine tannin and well-judged acidity that lends tension and energy, but remains very linear and strict in style. This is a Volnay that clearly refuses to come out and play at such a young age, and yet I suspect that it will mature into a very fine specimen with bottle age. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

(70% vendange entier): Bright red-ruby. Very ripe aromas of black cherry, violet and bitter chocolate. Plush, fat and sweet, offering lovely fullness and roundness for village wine. A rather dark-fruit style of Chambolle villages, finishing with serious but fine-grained tannins and very good length.

The 2015 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru from Domaine Arnoux-Lachaux reveals a rich bouquet of plum, incense, creamy spice and smoked duck. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and layered, with a fine-grained but firm chassis of tannin which will demand some bottle age, and good depth at the core. Charles Lachaux observes that the Clos de Vougeot, which is not blessed with the domaine's best vine genetics, is one of the parcels which has demonstrated the greatest improvement with biodynamic farming.

The 2015 Echezeaux Grand Cru is very pretty, opening in the glass with notes of sweet cherry, raspberry, cinnamon, rose and spice. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and sappy, with an ample chassis of fine-grained tannin, bright acids, good depth and length, and a solid core. Like most of Charles Lachaux's 2015s, this is shutting down, but it should be exceptional in the fullness of time. This is produced from a parcel in Rouges du Bas: one of the steeper, higher-altitude parts of Echézeaux, where the soil is thinner and the wines tend to be more tensile.

There is just enough reduction present to suppress the underlying fruit but it shouldn't last. (100% vendange entier; tasted from tank): Dark red with ruby tones. Deeper on the nose than the village Vosne, if not iniitially offering the same éclat of that wine; dark berry aromas are complicated by emerging notes of licorice, violet and mint. Plush and broad but quite airy and dry, offering an intriguing combination of thick texture and crunchy fruit. Plenty of stuffing for its ripe tannins. Displays a mineral quality on the spreading, glistening finish. The pH here is a rather high 3.77 but this wine does not lack for energy.

Healthy dark red. Sexy, soil-driven nose melds raspberry, spices, herbs and smoky minerals. Plush, fine-grained and sweet yet somehow light on its feet; like the 2016 version, this has a very high pH around 3.9 but its savory minerality and stem element give it sufficient energy and lift. A wonderfully seamless ripe-but-dry wine with a very long, rising finish featuring refined tannins and lingering black cherry and licorice notes.

Good dark red. Subtle, lightly medicinal aromas of redcurrant, dark cherry, iron, tobacco and herbs. Plush, savory wine with terrific calcaire energy and lift to its darker berry and spice flavors. Delivers a rare combination of density and definition, no doubt due to the small crop and old vines here. Finishes firmly tannic and very long, with impressive sappiness for the vintage.

Emanating from the eminent French winemakers Aubert and Pamela De Villaine, the exquisite Aubert et Pamela Villaine Mercurey Les Montots 2015 is an embodiment of artisanal finesse. Produced in the famed Mercurey region of Burgundy, this 2015 vintage emanates from south-east facing vineyards with clay and limestone soils. It processes under traditional vinification, employing native yeasts to preserve authenticity.

It's a predominantly Pinot Noir blend, offering nuance and complexity; exceptionally ripe, yet retaining a kinetic balance between fruit and vitality. The first pour releases aromas of red fruit and forest floor, leading to a distinct taste profile rich in cherry notes, structured tannins, and a lingering mineral finish.

Known for their conscientious winemaking, Aubert and Pamela De Villaine have imbued their philosophy into Aubert et Pamela Villaine Mercurey Les Montots 2015, reflecting their commitment to minimal intervention, organic farming, and respect for terroir. Undoubtedly, this Burgundy classic is a luminous testament to its producers' legacy.

Perhaps the best adjective is “selfish.” The palate is very well balanced with fine tannin and well-judged acidity that lends tension and energy, but remains very linear and strict in style.

Vinous (94)

Good dark red. Subtle, lightly medicinal aromas of redcurrant, dark cherry, iron, tobacco and herbs. Plush, savory wine with terrific calcaire energy and lift to its darker berry and spice flavors. Delivers a rare combination of density and definition, no doubt due to the small crop and old vines here. Finishes firmly tannic and very long, with impressive sappiness for the vintage.

Vinous (90-92)

(70% vendange entier; 15% new oak; tasted from tank): Healthy dark red. Enticing aromas of raspberry, spices, bitter chocolate and licorice. Wonderfully dense but juicy too, with its black fruit and mint flavors lifted by a floral element. Voluminous, classy, perfumed and very long, with the tannins barely noticeable today. A superb village wine.

Vinous (89-92)

(from 60-year-old vines; vinified with 80% whole clusters; this and all of the estate's crus wines were still in barrel in early November): Aromas of raspberry and underbrush. Plush in texture but more restrained than the wines that were already in tank. The fruit is here a bit more medicinal and minty and less sweet at this stage. Finishes with substantial dusty tannins and a spicy element. In an awkward phase.
