Burgundy

When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.

At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.

Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.

For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.

In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

Good dark red. Distinctly dark aromas of black fruits and violet. Brisk and penetrating, with a strong mineral spine accentuated by the use of stems. This tactile, classically dry wine is juicier than the Clos Sorbé but also more backward and firmly tannic--more muscular in the early going. Finishes with lingering black fruit perfume.

Vinous (90+)

(from Mazoyères-Chambertin; vinified with 80% whole clusters): Bright red. Reticent aromas of black cherry and licorice. Uncompromisingly dry on the palate but with noteworthy juicy intensity to the flavors of dark fruits and dried flowers. Not a particularly pliant or fleshy style--in fact a bit tough in the early going--but its rising perfume suggests that it will reward cellaring. Today the dusty tannins are accentuated by the influence of the stems, which limits the wine's sweetness.

Utterly silky and seamless in the mouth but not yet expressing itself; not a powerhouse but boasts lovely intensity to its lightly saline flavors of raspberry, cherry and dried rose. This tactile, suavely tannic wine is all about finesse today, but time in bottle should bring more weight.

(from a crop level of 28. 5 hectoliters per hectare, according to Duband): Bright, dark red. Subtle, airy aromas of dark berries, rose petal and licorice. Spicy, firm-edged and tight; leaner and more imploded than the Charmes-Chambertin but already shows superb intensity and inner-mouth aromatic lift. Most impressive today on the rising, suavely tannic finish, which tickles the taste buds with raspberry and rose petal perfume. A very classy grand cru.

Medium red. Cherry and smoke on the slightly rustic nose. Plump and broad on the palate, conveying a touch of sweetness to its redcurrant and soil flavors. Finishes with broad, fine-grained tannins, but a touch of bitter-edged cranberry dries the aftertaste. I tasted a suave, minerally Nuits Saint-Georges Les Procès last year from barrel, but I'm not as wild about this Pruliers from bottle.

The 2014 Volnay 1er Cru Champans was fully destemmed this year. I like the definition here, vibrant with red cherry and redcurrant that is beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied and tightly wound. It feels quite masculine with a chalky texture finish; there is good backbone and extraction. Give this 3-4 years so that it becomes less Pommard and more Volnay.

Bright medium red. At once more somber and higher-pitched on the nose than the Echézeaux, offering aromas of black cherry, dark berries, violet and bitter chocolate. A step up in texture and richness but densely packed and imploded today. At once powerful and cool, conveying terrific energy to its flavors of dark fruits, salty minerality, licorice and violet. This very long, powerful wine displays a downright chewy texture and yet there's noteworthy finesse to its tannins. Really glistens on the very long, rising finish. Lightish garnet. Like the Richebourg, there is an initial sweetness here. Smells so cool and delicately fragrant. Then on the palate, there is real power, the tannins holding everything in tightly as on the Grands Échezeaux but here the acidity spills around the edges and lifts it to terrific intensity on the palate. Firm, chalky texture but still fluid. Long and so refined that the power is disguised. In the empty glass, there is a return to fruit sweetness, showing the complexity and range in this wine.

Bright yellow-straw. Knockout soil-driven aromas and flavors of crushed rock, menthol, mint, ginger, white flowers, hazelnut and iodiney minerality, with a hint of fresh pear emerging with time in the glass: it would be easier to list what I didn't find in this wine! As tactile as a solid but with extraordinary mineral energy--and a bit of unabsorbed CO2--giving the middle palate astounding lift and a light touch. In a very pure, airy style but with great richness and some very ripe suggestions of marzipan and candied stone fruits. Finishes with outstanding gingery thrust and rising length, and the tannic structure of a red wine. A legend in the making.

Wine Advocate (96)

The 2014 Richebourg Grand Cru was picked on 20 and 21 September at 29.75 hectoliters per hectare. This has a gorgeous, flamboyant, vivacious bouquet with blossoming red cherries, crushed strawberry, less undergrowth scents compared to the showing in barrel, replaced by pressed rose petal notes. There is wonderful delineation and exuberance here. The palate is medium-bodied with a lively, spicy, white pepper-tinged entry, just a faint hint of black truffle tincturing the dark berry fruit. There is superb backbone and density here, a Richebourg delivering on its promise from barrel, plus it comes armed with an extraordinarily long aftertaste that evokes marine-like images, something wild and estuarine. While not as flattering as the Romanée-Saint-Vivant at the moment, just wait ten years. 1,160 cases produced. Tasted February 2017.

Light to mid garnet. Deeply fruited on the nose, with the promise of both fragrance and superb freshness. A definite herbal/stemmy character on the surface, then along with that an unexpected floral note and a hint of red cherry sweetness. Gloriously fine in texture, layer upon layer of finesse so that it changes back and forth in the glass and builds to complexity and incredible length. As I imagine graphene: immensely fine but with great internal strength.

The 2014 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru was picked on 21, 22 and 23 September cropped at 31.6 hectoliters per hectare. Now this has a distinctly earthy bouquet, one that leads you into the dark woods. Yes, there is plenty of vivacious red berry fruit, here augmented with something autumnal, brown leaves on an October morning, moss and tree bark. Then with continued aeration, these shift away and are replaced by pure floral aromas. The palate is very precise on the entry with a touch of orange rind and mandarin complementing the crushed strawberry and raspberry fruit; there is a touch of spiciness towards the finish that exerts a gentle, yet insistent grip à la Richebourg. The persistence here is very impressive and it just seems to blossom in the glass until you have utterly succumbed to its charms. 1,756 cases produced. Tasted February 2017.

Medium red. Strawberry liqueur, dried rose and peppery herbs on the nose. Silky in texture but a bit backward and medicinal, even rustic, offering cranberry, spice and herb flavors and a slight peppery greenness. I find this a bit herbal and shallow for grand cru. Needs time but will it blossom and fill out? Nicely delineated and aromatic but lacks the depth and full ripeness of the best wines here in 2014. This parcel located just below Chambertin is part of Faiveley's acquisition of Domaine Dupont-Tisserandot in late 2013.

Good full red. Scented aromas of blackberry, cassis, licorice, menthol and herbs (some stems were used here) are rather cool for the year and a bit forbidding. Translucent red cherry fruit and lifted aromatics make a strong first impression in the 2014 Nuits-Saint-Georges Aux Allots. Beams of supporting tannin and a burst of saline-infused energy give the 2014 its shape. The 2014 is clearly still recovering from its bottling. Still, the wine's focus is admirable. In many ways, the Aux Allots encapsulates the nervous yet precise, sinewy personality of the year. Next to the other village-level wines the Aux Allots is a bit compact.

The 2014 Romanée St. Vivant is a bit reduced today, but it possesses striking depth and density. This is an especially dark, dense RSV, and yet there is plenty of underlying grip. Readers will have to be especially patient, as the 2014 does not appear like it will drink at its best anytime soon. A finish endowed with substantial tannin and high acidity only reinforces that impression.

Vinous (94+)

Bright medium red. At once more somber and higher-pitched on the nose than the Echézeaux, offering aromas of black cherry, dark berries, violet and bitter chocolate. A step up in texture and richness but densely packed and imploded today. At once powerful and cool, conveying terrific energy to its flavors of dark fruits, salty minerality, licorice and violet. This very long, powerful wine displays a downright chewy texture and yet there's noteworthy finesse to its tannins. Really glistens on the very long, rising finish. Forget about this beauty for a decade.

Vinous (98+)

Wine Advocate (95)

Vinous (90)

Supple on entry, then quite tight in the middle palate, with dark berry, crushed cherry, spice and menthol flavors leading to a firmly tannic, slightly dusty finish. Showing little obvious sweetness today, this youthfully tough wine is in need of patience.

The 2014 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has a fragrant, floral bouquet with touches of blueberry, violet, wet limestone and effervescent blood orange. There is simply wonderful delineation here. The palate is very well structured, linear and strict in accordance with the vintage, driving acidity here maintaining the freshness with superb minerality on the finish. Oh yes. Yes. Yes. Yes.

Vinous (92)
