Burgundy
When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.
At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.
Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.
For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.
In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

The 2012 Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru is one of the outstanding wines of the vintage. Pure and sensual on the nose, replete with that breath-taking clarity, it dares to show more fruit intensity than the Romanée-Saint-Vivant from DRC served blind alongside. The palate is medium-bodied with tart red cherries and crushed stone, very mineral-driven with a wonderful, linear finish that is saving fireworks for those with the nous to age this another four or five years. Brilliant. Tasted blind at 67 Pall Mall in London.Inc. TAX€2,163.73 -
Tim Atkin MW (98)
Always served before Le Musigny and Les Amoureuses chez Roumier, this combines elements of both red and white soils across four separate parcels, all on the Chambolle-Musigny side of the Grand Cru. For all its texture and breadth, this has freshness and focus too with sapid red fruits, nuance and length. The oak needs a little time to fold into the wine, but who's in a rush with a Pinot like this?Inc. TAX€7,355.20 -
Tim Atkin MW (99)
Should this vineyard be a Grand Cru? Who knows, but it's always served last by Christophe Roumier when one visits the domaine. It's a site that combines heat and freshness to perfection. Crunchy, fresh and refined, the resulting wine is feminine and elegant with notes of fresh raspberries and red cherry, subtle oak and a spicy, savoury undertone. Wonderfully subtle winemaking from a brilliant vigneron.Inc. TAX€7,981.45 -
Tim Atkin MW (96)
The higher altitude of the vineyard and its proximity to the cold air of the combe are apparent on the nose and palate of this deliciously fragrant wine. It's very chalky and chiselled with abundant minerality and freshness lifting and sustaining the fruit flavours. The slight reduction adds another dimension here.Inc. TAX€1,082.53 -
Tim Atkin MW (98)
There's only one barrel of this in 2012 (as there was in 2003 and 1998), but someone will be lucky enough to drink it. It's Christophe Roumier's most ambitous, ageworthy wine, with two thirds whole bunch fermentation, quite marked oak and dense, yet silky concentration, with notes of cinnamon and spice combining with the red and black fruits. Very long, very complex, but still a baby.Inc. TAX€16,647.73 -
Vinous (90-92)
The Chambolle-Musigny Les Chatelots is big, rich and explosive. Here the fruit is dark in tone, with sweet, balsamic inflected notes that add complexity. The tannins are big and imposing, but also very nicely integrated. With time in the glass, the Chatelots becomes a bit more finessed, but never loses its essential intensity.Inc. TAX€2,084.95 -
Vinous (90-92)
The 2012 Chambolle-Musigny is a great introduction to the year. Dark cherries, plums and spices jump from the glass in a sensual, expressive Chambolle with tons of near-term appeal. Violets, rose petals and spices all flesh out on the radiant, expressive finish. The 2012 is a bit richer and broader than is normally the case, but there is plenty of vibrancy to balance the intensity of the fruit.Inc. TAX€1,745.90 -
Vinous (95-97)
Boillot's 2012 Bonnes Mares is wonderfully lifted, layered and perfumed, much of that coming from the inclusion of 50% whole clusters and the location of this parcel, which sits on the Chambolle side. Layered and beautifully expressive, the 2012 presents deep, intense layers of ripe, sweet fruit supported by beams of insistent salinity. What a gorgeous wine this is. Henri Boillot is very proud of this wine. It's easy to see why.Inc. TAX€747.29 -
Vinous (94-97)
Slightly hazy due to a recent stirring of the lees. Highly complex nose combines candied lemon, pineapple, menthol, linden tea, ginger and caramel. Thick and seamless in texture and showing a slightly exotic candied quality, but racy acidity gives sharp relief to the intense orange and lemon zest fruit. Really echoes on the gripping finish, showing a whiplash of citrus and saline flavors. These were the latest-picked vines in 2012, along with the Batard and Corton-Charlemagne, but this stunning wine remains just on the right side of surmaturite.Inc. TAX€12,188.87 -
Vinous (93-95)
Airy and weightless within the context of the year, the 2012 Volnay Les Caillerets is wonderfully complete and expressive. An exotic mélange of graphite, pencil shavings, white pepper and blue fruits takes shape in a precise, chiseled Burgundy that impresses for its finely cut texture and delineation. Totally vivid in the glass, the Caillerets dazzles from start to finish. This is a great example of the vintage at its very best.Inc. TAX€1,346.77 -

Violets, licorice, blueberries and graphite are some of the many notes that take shape in the 2012 Volnay Les Santenots. There is more than enough structure to support the fruit in a dramatic, large-scaled Burgundy that captures the essence of the year in its explosive personality. This intense, powerful Volnay need serious time in the cellar. A generous, beautifully resonant finish rounds things off.Inc. TAX€550.16 -

There is so much to like in the 2012 Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes. Silky and layered, the 2012 graces the palate with expressive dark red fruit and tons of Chambolle sensuality, all in a hugely attractive, mid-weight style. Pliant and expressive through to the finish, the 2012 should offer a long drinking window of superb drinking.Inc. TAX€1,672.38 -

Vinous (92+)
Bright, dark red. Crushed black and blue fruits lifted by violet on the nose (black fruits are a sign of great phenolic maturity, noted Humbert). Saline, sappy and rich, with dark fruit, licorice and menthol flavors spreading out to saturate the palate. More minerally than the Petite Chapelle, with an element of complexity that comes from successful ripening in a cool combe. Should make a terrific accompaniment to game dishes.Inc. TAX€1,414.12 -

The 2012 Musigny opens with the most exquisite, captivating aromatics imaginable. A seemingly eternal wine with no beginning and no end, the Musigny is a wine that calls for serious introspection as it constantly changes in the glass. Wild flowers of all sorts meld into exquisite, finely-sculpted fruit all with the support of silky tannins that only add to the wine's total sense of refinement. The finish is long, seamless and haunting. There isn't too much more to say, except that the Mugnier's 2012 Musigny is one of the wines of the year.Inc. TAX€12,173.20 -
Vinous (91)
The 2012 Nuits St. Georges Clos de la Maréchale marks a pretty significant stylistic shift in this tasting, but, then again, the Clos de la Maréchale suffered through a brutal hailstorm in July that lowered the crop dramatically. A core of dark red/black stone fruits, spices, mocha and leather opens up nicely, but the effect of the hail is felt in the wine's slightly angular profile. The 2012 is going to need time to come together, but my impression is that the tannins will always remain a bit rough around the edges.Inc. TAX€1,378.38 -
Vinous (90-93)
Remarkably vivid in the glass, the 2012 Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Hauts Porrets is super-impressive. Black cherries, menthol and spices are some of the many notes that come alive in an outrageously beautiful Burgundy loaded with tons of potential. I can't wait to taste this from bottle.Inc. (bottled in December of 2013): Bright medium red. Tight nose offers scents of raspberry, flowers and underbrush along with a somewhat rustic leathery quality. Sweet, intense and rather open-knit, offering considerable charm but also a hint of rusticity to its silky red fruit and mineral flavors. Strong juice, finishing with fine-grained, harmonious tannins and mounting length.Inc. TAX€1,616.87 -

The crown jewel is the 2012 Romanee-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru that comes from the 0.50-hectare slither planted in 1922. It already boasts an enticing bouquet laden with luscious dark cherry and creme de cassis fruit, stupendous mineralite and exotic touches of blood orange and marmalade. The palate is silky smooth with razor-sharp tannins, once again superb mineralite and a sleek, sensual, quite piercing sorbet-fresh finish that lingers in the mouth much longer than the Clos de Vougeot. This is a sophisticated, modern take on the grand cru, one with panache and oozing class.Inc. TAX€2,753.20 -
Wine Advocate (95)
The Roty 2012 Charmes-Chambertin is astoundingly good, and it has yet to shut down in the cellar. The bouquet reveals a lovely melange of black cherry, plum and rich soil tones that synergize beautifully with the wine's high toast cooperage. On the palate, the wine is carrying quite a bit of puppy fat that makes it deceptively accessible, but it's clear that when the very serious and refined structural chassis hidden behind that youthful precocity begins to open up a decade or so down the line, it will be an even more massive, bottomless wine. What a legacy the late Philippe Roty has left us!Inc. TAX€5,510.92 -

Savory herbs, mint, sweet black stone fruits and lavender are some of the many notes that take shape in the 2012 Clos des Lambrays. Deep and resonant, yet also medium in body, the 2012 impresses for its length and exceptional overall balance. The 100% whole clusters are very nicely integrated. Hints of rose petal and violet add striking perfume on the finish. Thierry Brouin did 5-6 punch downs a day to start, then left the wine on the skins for a total of two weeks. Simply put, the 2012 is shaping up to be magnificent.Inc. TAX€5,210.77 -

Situated above Le Montrachet and often rivalling it in bottle, this is a superb release from Domaine Leflaive that is one of the white wines of the vintage.
