Burgundy

When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.

At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.

Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.

For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.

In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

Phenolic and pithy again, like the Blanchot. Quite stylised for Chablis – partly ‘naturalistic’, partly oxidative! It works though, and there's a bit of oak in the mix too. Not archetypal Chablis, but still impressive.

The 2011 Corton-Charlemagne is drop-dead gorgeous. Subtle, nuanced and very pretty, the 2011 is all about understatement and reserve. The aromas and flavors show off striking inner perfume and impeccable balance. This is a great showing from an utterly beautiful wine with a bright future, but it is also a wine that demand's the taster's full attention.

The 2011 Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens has a tight blackberry, bay leaf and seaweed bouquet. The palate is typically tannic and brusque on the entry with angular tannins, fine acidity and a strong saline finish. There is a hint of bitter chocolate on the aftertaste, perhaps from a touch of wood that needs time to be absorbed, therefore I suggest affording this Pommard several years in bottle – there is a lot of energy in this wine. Drink 2016-2030.

Bright full red. Red fruit aromas are perked up by pepper and spices. Dense and backward, in a distinctly masculine style. The pepper and spice flavors are given a penetrating quality by the wine's firm spine of acids and tannins. Youthfully imploded today but there's superb red fruit intensity here. Finishes vibrant and long, with slowly expanding fruit and spice flavors. This should evolve gracefully in bottle.

The 2011 Meursault Charmes wraps around the palate with gorgeous depth and pure textural richness. The resonance and warmth of the fruit is incredibly inviting, while the creamy, expansive finish is pure Charmes. Expressive floral and spice notes add gorgeous inner perfume as the wine continues to show off its pedigree. This is a drop-dead gorgeous Meursault from Matrot, not to mention a wine of immense pleasure. The Charmes is a blend of parcels at the top of the hill (75%), mid-slope (15%) and bottom of the slope (10%).

Saturated bright, deep red. Sappy black cherry, wild herbs, tea leaf and exotic spices on the complex but subdued nose. Broad, rich, deep and classically dry, with a saline character contributing to the impression of density and extract. Very complete but backward Richebourg with a lovely rising aftertaste featuring well-buffered, ripe tannins.

Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. There is a little reduction to bypass on the nose, although underneath this Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Clos des Réas appears to be some attractive cranberry and blackberry/briar scents, with fine tension and nicely integrated oak. The palate is crisp, lithe and silky in the mouth, commencing in harmonious fashion, but becoming a tad hard toward the finish. I am certain that bottle age will tenderize this Vosne-Romanée, but it seems sulky at the moment. I remain optimistic that it will repay 5-6 years in the cellar.

(from a mix of 40- and 60-year-old vines): Good bright red. Less showy on the nose today than the 1er cru, with a distinctly darker fruit character and strong spiciness. Then juicy and sweet but a bit youthfully dry-edged on the palate, with noteworthy definition to the flavors of black cherry and licorice. Finishes with very good length and backbone. This wine should benefit from the sweetening influence of a racking.

Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. Laurent Ponsot’s Clos de la Roche Vieilles Vignes '11 is reticent at first and demands coaxing, although it repays the patient imbiber with lively floral scents that are entwined with strawberry pastilles and cranberry. The palate is medium-bodied with a fleshy and almost corpulent entry, at least for a 2011 Côte de Nuits. There is admirable depth here with fleshy strawberry and red cherry notes infused with fennel and sage. It lingers for a very long time, which is quite unusual for this vintage. While it needs another few years to completely coalesce, it will be worth the wait.

The 2011 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru is very attractive, opening up in the decanter to offer a classic young Ramonet bouquet of lemon oil, mint, honeyed pear, white flowers and a framing of toasty new oak. On the palate, the wine is fresh and vibrant, with a broad and elegantly glossy attack, but it ranks as a comparatively open-knit rendition of this great wine, without the depth, structure or complexity of the very best vintages. Of course, it's an excellent Bâtard nonetheless.
